1 GCSE Performing Arts
2 Rationale (Why take it?) Specification seeks to emphasise the unique qualities of Performing Arts. Given opportunities to analyse and evaluate your own and others' performances including viewing and responding to live and recorded performances. There is a balance of practical performing, creative group work and work related research. The controlled tasks in Unit1 include research on a range of Performing Arts activities and preparation for the practical work carried out in Unit 2.
3 Aims & Learning Outcomes The GCSE specification in Performing Arts aims to prepare for decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices in the Performing Arts Industry. Following a course in GCSE Performing Arts will enable students to: develop and demonstrate skills in a range of practical, creative and performance work; develop an understanding of working in the Performing Arts industry; understand the Performing Arts industry as a performer and a member of the audience; work imaginatively - developing and communicating ideas; understand the elements required to create performances for an audience.
4 Content (What do I have to do?) You can choose from the following Performing Arts disciplines at Mark Jermin Acting Dance Music (vocal and instrumental performance)

6 Double Award To achieve the Double Award, candidates must successfully complete PA1 and PA2 in addition to PA3 and PA4.

8 UNIT 1 Exploring Performing Arts and the Performing Arts Industry 60% Single Award 30% Double Award
9 UNIT 1 is a unit in 3 parts TASK 1 - Developing Performing Arts Skills You will undertake (do) an audit of your Performing Arts skill, and will develop an action plan with clear targets and timescales for improvement. You will complete a performance task which leads into brief task to demonstrate your development. Your work will need to take into consideration the work of at least one performer/technician, in your selected skill. The work would ideally be that of a professional in the industry, which may have been witnessed as a live performance or video/audio recording It is hoped to take you to a live theatre event before Christmas.

12 UNIT 1 Task 2 Task 2 - Knowledge of the Performing Arts Industry You will research the skills and qualifications needed for two jobs within the Performing Arts Industry. This will be carried out as a piece of research using the internet, the library, an interview with an employer or employee, etc. You will write this up in school 500 words per job and then 500 words of which job you would be best at and why?.

14 UNIT 1 Task 3 Task 3 (Linked to Unit 2) Preparation for Performance You will carry out research on the Themed Showcase Performance they will produce in May This research will include: the selection of suitable material, in keeping with the choice of theme, for the candidate and for one other performing skill area details of at least two venues (either locally or nationally) that would be suitable for the performance estimated costing of the venue and equipment a brief report demonstrating an understanding of health and safety implications in relation to the candidate s role and the actual performance space selected.

16 Unit 2 Themed Showcase Performance 40% Single Award 20% Double Award
17 Unit 2 You will create a showcase performance on a theme of GOOD & EVIL. You must select the target audience for the performance. All performances will take place in front of an audience. Groups of between 2 5 You can have a mixture of skills in a group External examiner Early May 2012
18 After the performance A written examination paper evaluating the process and the final performance. In the exam you will need to:- analysis your own progress and that of others in your group; How your ideas were developed and changed during the process; Talk about the feedback you received during the process, from friends, teachers and the audience during the final performance; The task will be completed under formal examination conditions, and will be externally marked.
19 PA2 The performance will be assessed by a visiting examiner and will be video recorded by the centre. The DVD/video and the evaluations will be sent to WJEC by a specified date.
