1 Unit 8: Outdoor activities (LEVEL 2) Learning outcomes By completing this unit candidates will develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills associated with the outdoor activity sector of the sports industry. They will develop an understanding of the scope of outdoor provision and the effect outdoor activities have on personal effectiveness, social skills and self-esteem. Candidates will produce evidence to meet the unit assessment objectives in order to show that they understand: the characteristics of outdoor adventure activities the role of public, private and voluntary organisations in the provision of outdoor adventure activities the benefits of participation in outdoor adventure activities the hazards and hazard prevention measures associated with outdoor adventure activities. Candidates will also demonstrate practical skills and review their performance whilst participating in outdoor adventure activities. Assessment objectives 1 Describe the characteristics of four outdoor adventure activities 2 Profile three outdoor activities centres which provide the outdoor adventure activities described in Assessment Objective 1 Knowledge, understanding and skills Examples of outdoor adventure activities: climbing (eg rock climbing, abseiling) watersports (eg canoeing, windsurfing) trekking (eg hillwalking, orienteering) caving (eg caving, potholing) Characteristics: exposure to risk time required equipment required preparation necessary venue/location for activity skills required Private organisations (eg outdoor activity centres, activity holiday organisations, residential camps) Public organisations (eg Plas-y-Brenin in North Wales, National Sports Centres, eg Holme Pierrepoint in Nottinghamshire) Voluntary organisations (eg Scouts, Guides, YHA centres) Profile: location, age, size range of facilities and activities opening times, charges ownership public, private, voluntary OCR Level 2 Nationals in Sport 1

3 Assessment This unit is centre-assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit candidates must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they can meet all of the assessment objectives. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by candidates is authentic. An OCR Centre Authentication Form is provided in the Centre Handbook and includes a declaration for assessors to sign. It is a requirement of the QCA Common Criteria for all Qualifications that proof of authentication is received. Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements Access to the outdoor environment is essential for delivery of this unit. Outdoor adventure activities must be undertaken in line with national governing body guidelines. All activities must be risk assessed. Centres without the necessary qualified staff may choose to deliver the practical parts of this unit through a recognised outdoor activity centre or centres. Where external centres are used it is strongly recommended that they are licensed by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority to ensure that candidates safety is a priority. This unit has links with Unit 1: The sporting environment and Unit 2: Health, safety and prevention of injury in sport. Activities should be selected with regard to candidates previous experiences and knowledge. This may involve travelling to suitable locations and/or extending into multi-day trips/expeditions. The organisation of activities should be undertaken by the tutor, although candidates could be involved in selecting suitable activities and/or decision-making where appropriate, eg route planning for an expedition or identification of a suitable activity centre. Where centres are used for activity experience, these should be used for Assessment Objective 2 to make profiles relevant. For Assessment Objective 3 it would be beneficial for candidates to access community group literature or to meet community group members to enable a more accurate assessment of benefits. If possible, candidates should also be encouraged to participate in these groups (eg Duke of Edinburgh Award). Alternatively, staff and instructors at outdoor activity centres will be able to provide much of the information for this assessment objective. Each of the three activities for Assessment Objective 5 could be undertaken during one trip, although centre resources might dictate that each activity should be delivered on separate occasions, which is still acceptable. Assessment of this unit could be through a logbook which would allow candidates to build up a plan of preparation, record of participation and review of performance. This log could be centre devised allowing candidates to explore suitable resources and record findings appropriately. For Assessment Objective 5 the review of performance should be based on tutor/instructor/peer feedback and candidate experience. It is possible to generate the evidence for all of the assessment objectives in this unit during one residential visit. Candidates may provide portfolio evidence for all of the assessment objectives in this unit using a range of presentation techniques. This may include written work, diaries, communication OCR Level 2 Nationals in Sport 3
4 logbooks, the use of video, audio tapes, presentations, and assessor testimony/witness statements. Where candidates demonstrate competence, centres should record skills demonstrated on appropriate recording documentation. Signposting to Key Skills!
