2 Course Overview Pulmonary diseases come in a variety of forms and consume a large portion of our health care resources everyday. It is estimated that 24 million adults in the United States alone suffer from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease); 12 million of which are physician diagnosed while another 12 million are undiagnosed. Asthma currently affects 23 million people in the United States and 12 million of them have experienced at least one asthma attack during the last year. Approximately 40,000 infants and 150,000 adults have respiratory distress syndrome while another 12 million have obstructive sleep apnea. In order to meet the needs of the growing population of patients with respiratory diseases, practitioners must stay current on the latest in evidenced-based medicine and technology developed for optimal care. The 2011 Respiratory Care Seminar will be taught by leading professionals who will address these pulmonary challenges and offer evidence-based tools and strategies to improve patient care. Attendees will participate in a day of educational sessions and have the opportunity to interact with specialists in the field. Recent advancements in respiratory and pulmonary equipment will also be discussed. Educational Objectives After attending this activity, participants should be able to: Discuss recent research and its effect on neonatal respiratory care. Employ strategies to stabilize patients injured in the field. Illustrate current treatment options for sleep apnea. Address the unique needs of the patient in the palliative care setting. Identify the relationship between breathing disorders and swallowing difficulties. Accreditation California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP15030 for 6 contact hours. Contact hours will be provided by Scripps Health. Respiratory Care Practitioners This course meets the requirements for CE for RCPs in California. Cultural and Linguistic Competency This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195 which requires that all CME activities comprising a patient care element include curriculum addressing the topic of cultural and linguistic competency. The intent of this bill is to ensure that health care professionals are able to meet the cultural and linguistic concerns of a diverse patient population through effective and appropriate professional development.
