Presenter Background Pacific Gas and Electric Company Northern and Central California Gas and Electric Utility Company (including San Francisco Bay Area) Around 5.1 million electric service customer accounts and 4.2 gas service customer accounts Members of UCA International OpenSG, ZigBee and HomePlug to define an IETF based Smart Metering solution ZigBee and HomePlug membership Members of both the ZigBee Alliance and HomePlug Alliance Representing key utility and vendor companies (see the full list of members on the ZigBee and HomePlug Alliance sites) Presenter: Don Sturek, consultant for PG&E Chair of the UCA International OpenSG Communications Working Group and ZigBee Core Stack Working Group (ZigBee IP) 2

Smart Energy V2 and ZigBee IP Background US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Direction on standards selection UCA International OpenSG OpenHAN System Requirements Specification (SRS) Market Requirements Document (MRD) and Use Cases for Smart Energy V2 ZigBee Developing IETF based IP stack for IEEE based platforms based on OpenHAN SRS and Smart Energy V2 MRD HomePlug Development IEEE P1901 compliant powerline carrier solutions: HomePlug AV and HomePlug SE Recognized Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) IETF IEC IEEE W3C 3

ZigBee IP Standards Selection 4 4

ZigBee IP Architecture Overview Meets Smart Energy V2 MRD: Shall source existing standards from internationally recognized standards bodies with preferential treatment given to the following standards bodies: IEEE, IETF, IEC, ISO, and the W3C Where standards do not exist, new standards shall be proposed and developed within these organizations Clean layered architecture 5

ZigBee IP Standards Selection IEEE with some extensions proposed in task group 4e IETF networking standards: 6LowPAN (RFC 4944) IPv6 (RFC 2460) UDP, ICMP (probably not TCP) ROLL (in Internet-Draft form now) IEC standards CIM Extensions from ZigBee SE and OASIS (harmonized back into the CIM) W3C standards EXI (probably, though could be another tokenized XML solution) Missing technology that we are working on in other standards groups: Binary HTTP, SOAP over UDP or similar binary web services transport protocol (though IETF 6LowAPP or Transport Work Group) Embedded Service Location Protocol (SLP) (through IETF) MAC enhancements (in IEEE task group 4e) Meter Access Side Communications standard (in IEEE task group 4g) 6
