2 The Life Skills Center s Purpose: To meet the mental health needs of LAHC students through a streamlined plan of: Crisis intervention Brief treatment Educational workshops & seminars Psycho-educational support groups Referrals to community agencies
3 Hours of Operation Individual appointments available: Mondays Thursdays, 8 am-8 pm, Fridays 8 am 4 pm Saturday hours are available by appointment. Walk-In/Crisis Intervention staffed by Psychology Interns in the Health Center: Mondays & Fridays 10:00 12:00 pm Tuesdays - Thursdays 11:00 1:00 pm
4 Cost-Effective Service Delivery Through the Use of Psychology Interns: Unpaid Volunteers Working to accumulate hours necessary for state licensure. Given professional supervision and consultation. Deliver the quantity and high quality of service necessary to assist our students in achieving a productive future. Recruitment, selection and comprehensive training of Psychology Interns are ongoing.
5 Cost Effectiveness: For the salary expense of a.6 Psychologist: The College receives the additional work effort of an entire group of Psychology Interns, typically 10 12, part time. Over 175 hours of service is thereby available to the campus community per week.
6 Sample Annual Activity Level: We are able to provide 3,000 + hours of quality service, reaching hundreds of students, faculty and staff. This includes everything: individual counseling, seminars, workshops ongoing psycho-educational groups
7 Crisis Intervention Response Efforts: Local & National Disasters Women s Basketball Team Crisis Suicide Attempts & Campus Safety Threats Sexual Assault &Domestic Violence Incidents Classroom Crises Homicide of a Beloved Coach Individual Student Crises Faculty/Staff Crises
8 Mental Health Referrals Insurance Considerations: Health Insurance/No Health Insurance/Medicare-Medical. Students offered between 1-3 referrals to community agencies and programs. Collaboration with the LACDMH in San Pedro for disability benefits for qualifying students.
9 Referral Network: Psychiatrists in the community willing to accept Medi-Cal. Mental Health Therapists in the community, working on a sliding scale or willing to accept Medi-Cal. Domestic Violence Shelters Homeless Shelters Sexual Assault Community Response Agencies Department of Public Social Services Department of Rehabilitation Local Food Banks Community Support Groups
10 Student Presenting Concerns: Depression is a factor in over 15% of student concerns presented to us. Anxiety is the focus in about 15%. Family concerns are the other large issue, also at 15% of the concerns expressed.

15 More on the Educational Model: Special efforts are made to offer workshops more than once, on different week days and at different times of the day so that evening as well as day students could partake of the programs. Attendance varies between individuals. Many events are co-sponsored with other program such as out TRIO Program, DSPS, EOPS and CARE and were developed collaboratively with the leadership of these programs.
16 Special Focus All Staff/All Campus Wellness The Life Skills Center routinely participates in the College Health Fair by providing a Stress- Reduction Questionnaire and an Intern to discuss the results with the 50 Employees who stopped by. The College EAP is generally responsible for the mental well-being of non-students on campus, but because we re in situ, we re sometimes first responders who can do triage and refer to the EAP or other external sources of assistance when appropriate.

18 FOCUS on Special Populations- Parents In collaboration with the Child Development Center, GAIN/Cal WORKS, Foster Parent Network and the CARE program, a variety of parenting programs have been/continue to be offered: Parenting Single-Parenting Starting a Baby-Sitting Coop Age Appropriate Discipline Dating for Single Parents Drop-In Support Group for Parenting Questions have been the topics of seminars and workshops.

20 Special Focus: Student Academic Success A Student Success Circle is a group of students working together accountable to and for one another, to make sure that everyone in the Circle is doing well It s a place to get used to working with different types of people, to build social skills and good relationships that will help in school and in the workforce. Circles create a psychological sense of community. Circles provide space for the whole person. They are teaching-learning communities proactive and prevention oriented.
