Scout History Programme Ideas and Resource Pack Sarah Mills Department of Geography University of Leicester July 2011
The history of scouting can be fun, exciting and bring to life a number of the programme zones and badges for Beaver Scouts. Beliefs and Attitudes Write a poem, prayer or reflection about Beavers. These could be read out as part of a Founder s Day service (22nd February). Community Links to: Promise Challenge and Faith Activity Badge Visit another Scout Group in your District and hold a joint Beaver meeting - making new friends, playing games, and having a night of exploration about scout history (see worksheets) Fitness Links to: Friendship Challenge Short hike around local area, learning about surroundings and local history. Can you spot other Scout Groups? Sites of interest? Creative Links to: Fitness Challenge, Explore Activity Badge and Hikes Away Staged Activity Badge Design a birthday card for scouting on Founders Day (Baden-Powell s birthday on the 22nd February). Links to: Creative Challenge and Creative Activity Badge Wordsearch on international scouting history (see worksheet) Learn about scouting abroad (food, dance, song, uniform) Links to: Challenge Have a go at basic tracking, like the first Scouts on Brownsea Island in 1907 (see Scouting for Boys p.42-43) Links to: Outdoor Challenge and Adventure Activity Badge Many of these activities can be used as part of the requirements for the Chief Scout s Bronze Award
The history of scouting can be fun, exciting and bring to life a number of the programme zones and badges for Cub Scouts. Beliefs and Attitudes Read or act out a Camp Fire Yarn from Scouting for Boys about scouting values. Community Links to: Promise Challenge and Entertainer Activity Badge Arrange a talk by an ex-scout who belonged to the Group. This could be someone from the local community who you know attended the Group, or member of Scout Fellowship. Fitness Links to: Community Challenge and Local Knowledge Activity Badge Have a go at the exercises Baden-Powell describes in Scouting for Boys (p ) Creative Design a poster to celebrate a Group s anniversary or exhibition Make a collage of old badges or a camp blanket to display in your Scout Hut Arrange a talk from someone who attended a Jamboree. Encourage them to bring in badges and gifts they swapped from different countries to show the Cubs and learn about world scouting. Links to: Fitness Challenge Links to: Creative Challenge and Artist Activity Badge Links to: Challenge and World Faiths Activity Badge Try one or two items from the camp programme at Brownsea Island in For example, firelighting or shelterbuilding. Run as pack night, or on camp. Links to: Outdoor Challenge, Camper Activity Badge and Nights Away Staged Activity Badge Many of these activities can be used as part of the requirements for the Chief Scout s Silver Award
The history of scouting can be fun, exciting and bring to life a number of the programme zones and badges for Scouts. Beliefs and Attitudes Hold a discussion or debate about the Scout Law and its messages. Each Patrol could pick one law and reflect on its meaning today. Community Links to: Promise Challenge Research a short history of your Group. Create a visual, audio or video presentation and give a short talk about your discoveries at a Parents Night or Group Event. Fit for life Links to: Heritage Activity Badge, Public Relations Activity Badge and Photographer Badge Creative expression Plan and complete a hike tracing the locations of Scout Groups and local campsites that have been used by Scouts in your District in the past. You might find somewhere new to explore! Have a go at making original patrol flags from the design in Scouting for Boys p.43 Try and make bread from Baden-Powell s instructions in Scouting for Boys p Did your Group have a connection abroad in the past? Why not re-make or establish a new link with a Troop abroad via the International Links Scheme Links to: Fitness Challenge and Hikes Away Staged Activity Badge Links to: Creative Challenge, Craft Activity Badge and Chef Activity Badge Links to: Challenge, Writer Activity Badge and World Faiths Activity Badge A weekend camp based on the programme from Brownsea Island in Scouts could try and recreate the activities at their local campsite in a back to basics and exciting themed camp. Links to: Outdoor Challenge and Nights Away Staged Activity Badge Many of these activities can be used as part of the requirements for the Chief Scout s Gold Award
The history of scouting can be fun, exciting and bring to life a number of the programme zones and badges for Explorer Scouts. Values and Relationships Community Service Physical Recreation Skills As a Unit, organise a Founders Day service for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Think about interactive material you could include. Find out about the history of your Group/District and consider running a small exhibition on its contribution to scouting and the local community. This could be part of an AGM or fun-day. You could use visual aids, social media and publicity material. Try a new sport encouraged by Baden-Powell in Scouting for Boys. You might be surprised that in 1907 this included Ju-jitsu! Try and make a tent or boat following the instructions in Scouting for Boys p Design a webpage about your Unit and its own history Arrange a talk from someone who attended a Jamboree (past Explorer, Network member or as part of the IST). Find out about future opportunities to be involved. Links to: Faith Partnership Award Links to: Community Activity Badge and Public Relations Activity Badge Links to: Physical Recreation Activity Badge Links to: Creative Arts Activity Badge Links to: International Partnership Award Explorer Belt expedition to an International Scout Centre or site linked to your Scout Group s history. For example, a project on the role of your Scout Group in wartime could include an expedition to France. Links to: Explorer Belt, International Partnership Award and Nights Away Staged Activity Badge Many of these activities can be used as part of the requirements for the Chief Scout s Diamond Award, Chief Scout s Platinum Award or Queen s Scout Award.
