1 Hood s Top ios Useful Student Apps Here is a collection of ipad applications offered by our experienced students and staff. Most are free, but those that are not free are considered a good deal. We have not tested each and every app, so if they do not behave as advertised, please let us know. If you have any of your own to recommend, please do so. Worthwhile Paid Apps 1) Education Resources Free Graphing Calculator StoryKit (P) Prezi Viewer This is a graphing calculator app. It has scientific functions, graphing features, and reference formulas. It also has a triangle and polynomial solver. It can be used to complete calc and stat coursework at Hood. You can present and read four preloaded stories using this app. You can also make your own books to present. StoryKit offers a more creative way than PowerPoint to present information. Users can add sounds/audio, pictures, drawings, writing, or text as well as share stories by . This app links to your online Prezi account. From the app you can view other Prezis and view and edit your own. You can present from the app by connecting to a projector. Prezi is similar to PowerPoint but offers different and more exciting effects. It flows more smoothly and isn't as choppy as a PowerPoint slide by slide format can be. Periodic Table Lite This app is a periodic table. It makes data found on the Periodic Table easily accessible. Dictionary.com Use this app just like dictionary.com to search for words and definitions. It is a dictionary at your fingertips. Box.net With 5GB free, Box makes it easy to access and edit your files (w/3 rd party plugin), share content and stay connected with other people from anywhere on any device. It is very similar to Dropbox and Google docs.

2 Netflix Use this app to log in to your Netflix account to view movies and TV shows on your ipad. It will automatically save your place in a movie or episode, which you can resume watching from the same point on another device. Watching on your ipad allows you to take screen shots easily. Photowall ($0.99 for full version) Dropbox This app allows users to create photo collages for posters, presentations, or just for fun. You are limited to three saved collages in the free version. You can create collages and then take screen shots to avoid using your three saved. This app is an online file-sharing app. It is good to have an account since some faculty members use it. You can use this app to share documents with selected people or share a folder of documents with an entire class. This app links with many other apps to back up your work, and you can access it from other devices. It links with many note-taking apps. TED Pocket Shakespeare Technology, Education, and Design educational talks are given in the app. These videos are available on a variety of topics and are a good reference for students. Faculty members can also use them in class. You can view all TED videos using this app. This app allows you to save articles, tweets, blogs, and web pages for subsequent viewing. This functionality can be helpful when you are initially gathering research for a paper or projects well as when you see something interesting but do not have time at that moment to focus on it. This app contains all Shakespeare's works in one place. It provides information about Shakespeare exhibits and events worldwide if you sign up for this alert. Flashcards [+] This flashcard app allows you to make your own flashcards with a front and back. You can also download pre-made flashcard decks from quizlet.com. You are limited to seven decks with 75 cards in each deck when using the free version. Using the I know feature in this app causes the selected flashcard/s to be shown less frequently when studying the deck. The app allows the deck to be studied in order or randomly. Flashcardlet This app is similar to Flashcards Pro. It allows you to create your own flashcards with a front and back. You can also download flashcard decks from quizlet.com. You can choose based on preference of card layout. The I know or Mastered feature in this app will not show the card again when studying in the same session. This app allows for an unlimited number of flashcard decks whereas Flashcards Pro has a limit of seven decks in the free version. Slideshark This is a PowerPoint presentation app for the ipad. You can view and present PowerPoints in this app. It features a laser pointer.

3 ShowMe interactive whiteboard This app allows you to view whiteboard and audio lectures for topics that encompass math, English, science, foreign languages, social studies, and other general topics. You can also create your own presentations using the app. You can add pictures into your presentations. This app offers another creative way to do a presentation or project. Constitution for ipad This app provides a copy of the constitution. It also lists all the signers and additional information. Simple Minds+ Ideasketch You can create idea webs using this app. You have to type the web name and organize the maps. You can save the results as a photo and then print this to hand in as draft work. This app is the same as Simple Minds+. This app has a list view option allowing you to make duplicates of an idea. You can share the idea and save to box and Facebook. You can pick by preference of layout and color options. 2.) Note Taking Notes Documents 2 This app is a preloaded on your ipad. It is good for quick typed notes and lists. The app dates the notes for you and keeps them in order using the date on which they were last updated. You can the lists and notes, but you can't organize them into folders. This app allows you to create documents using functions that are similar to those found in Word and Excel. You are able to use it to type notes and it links with Google Docs. inotes ($3.99 full version) You can use this app to write or type notes on lined paper. You can insert pictures into the notes. There are a few different pen options. In the free version you get three notebooks with eight pages each. In the paid version, the number of notebooks and pages is unlimited. You can name and organize notebooks for each class. Plaintext This app is good for typing notes. It links with and automatically syncs and backs up to Dropbox. It is easy for copying and pasting into blogs or other word processing programs. It also links with text expander to convert abbreviations into full words automatically.

4 inclass This app is a really great organizer for anyone who wants to type notes. It allows you to put a new semester in its own book and add courses and save notes by course or by date. You can also take audio notes and insert pictures, save tasks, and set reminders. Paper by FiftyThree ($7.99 for full) In the free version you get unlimited customizable journals and pages with a pen option. Only blank pages are available. Additional writing, drawing, and paint options are available in the paid version. This app is also really great for art. Paper Desk LT ($3.99 full version) Using this app you can protect notes with a password and recovery . You can create task lists, write or type notes, and take audio notes. This app links with , Twitter, Google docs, Dropbox, itunes and you can print from the app. In the free version you get three notebooks and cannot connect to Dropbox until you upgrade to the paid version. ibrainstorm This app mimics the look of a corkboard. You can write on it or add sticky notes with typed text. The app allows for unlimited projects. You can connect devices to see the same project through WiFi or Bluetooth. Bamboo Paper ($1.99 for full version) This app changes for left-handed writing. It allows for five photos per page, pen and highlighter options with nine colors, and three stroke thicknesses for each color. It has an eraser tool and allows you to bookmark pages. There are nine page options, including blank, lined, list, etc. You are able to undo an accidental clear page. You get unlimited pages and can view all pages from any page. The app dates each page for you. You only get one notebook in free version, while the full version allows for multiple notebooks. Totes m' Notes You can write or type notes in this app. It offers two color options for both pen and sharpie as well as a thick and thin option for pencil. There are options for graph or lined paper. There is a converter for temperature, length, speed and weight. You can add sticker and pictures your pages and folders. The downside is you cannot just slide to the next page like a notebook and instead must exit and add each new page. Nebulous This app is very similar to Plaintext. It is good for typing notes. It links with and automatically syncs and backs up to Dropbox. It is easy for copying and pasting into blogs or other word processing programs. It also links to Plaintext and Box. You can or print directly from this app. It has different background options and can adjust line spacing. This Useful Hood College Student Apps document was created in Nebulous. Live Notes Lite You need the paid version to access almost all of the features, which include search, VGA output, recordings, export, and share. You can share through Box, AirPrint or Dropbox. This app limits you to three notes and recorded notes. Page Composer This app allows you to write, type, draw, highlight, import pictures, and export files as a.jpg or.png. You can add maps or documents and use documents as backgrounds, such as tax forms and other forms. It allows an unlimited number of pages and is for projects and notes.

5 Sketchpad 3 This app has unlimited space per "sheet" and unlimited sheets. You can organize documents or drawings in folders, Sketchpad links to Dropbox, Google docs, EverNote, Picasa, , and Twitter. You can insert photos and text, and the app has zoom and select features, much like Paint. You can customize colors for the pen, and there are 4 line thickness options and an eraser tool. It is good for math notes, because you can draw graphs right into notes. Moveable Write This app is for handwritten notes. It takes more work and is more difficult to use compared with other note taking apps because you have to tap for more room after each word. It organizes notes by date, but these can be renamed so that you can view one set of notes like a notebook. You can customize pen colors and line width. There are 4 paper options: lined, blank, box, and grid. Inkflow ($4.99 full version) This app is great for handwritten notes. You can change the font by zooming in for bold or zooming out and stretching. You can move text using the selection tool. You can draw diagrams or write special characters. In the free version there is a pen tool and you are allowed 20 pages per book. In the full version you get unlimited pages, pen, pencil, paint brush, and eraser tools with a customizable full color palette. With the full version you can also copy, cut, and paste as well as insert, delete, or save pages to the camera roll. 3.) Organization/Time Management Calendar Reminders Skydrive This app is preloaded on the ipad and allows you to input your schedule and then view it by day, week, month, or year. You can input birthdays and change the color of things for work, home, or regular activities. You can use a repeat function to avoid typing regular tasks again as well as set alerts and document your availability. You can also send event invites from your calendar. This app is preloaded on the ipad and can be used to set up tasks that you need to be reminded to do. You can set up an alert with the priority of the task and add notes about the task. You can also check off tasks once they are completed. SkyDrive is the place to store your files so you can access them from virtually any device. With SkyDrive for ios, you can easily access, manage and share files, videos and phones on the go. MyHomework Doit.im This app is accessible online and connects to Facebook. In the app you can view a calendar with your classes and homework and whether the homework is upcoming, late, or complete. To get homework reminders you need to have a MyHomework account that costs $1.99 for a one year subscription. This app links you with Gmail and can be logged into with a Gmail account. You can enter new tasks and projects and organize them as scheduled, someday, next, or waiting. You can mark completed tasks and either archive or delete completed tasks. You can add tags, context, or reminders and send tasks to others as well.

6 Wunderlist You can use this app to create new lists and organize tasks on existing To-do lists. Functions include adding notes, reminders, due dates, and prioritization of tasks. You can also bookmark tasks and view tasks for today or tomorrow only. Tasks can also be viewed using categories such as overdue, for the week, and no due date. Timeli Planner HD This app allows you to schedule projects and tasks within a project on a timeline. This app is better for long or ongoing projects. Tasks can be made different colors and timelines can be printed. You can use this app to add tasks and view these tasks in a planner or on a calendar. You can categorize tasks, set alarms, and create repeating events for regular tasks. You can move your tasks from planned to actual once they are completed as well as organize tasks by time, duration, or category. 4.) Communications Blackboard Mobile Learn Voxer imessage Skype FaceTime Twitter Using this app you can access Blackboard and see everything by class, just like online. You can see all assignments and blogs. From the app you can download attachments right to your ipad for viewing and annotating. This is a walkie talkie app that allows you to add anyone with a Voxer account. You can send a quick voice, picture, or text message to any Voxer friend. This app is preloaded on your ipad. You can send text or picture messages to any imessage registered device. It keeps your conversations organized. Skype allows you to make voice or video calls and send IMs to any Skype account for free. You can also make calls to phones for a fee. This could be useful to view a class from your room for when you are sick and to keep in touch with people at home. This app is preloaded on your ipad. It is very similar to Skype, but can only be used with other Apple devices. You can use it to make video calls to another iphone, ipod, or ipad for free. Sign in to your Twitter account on your ipad and tweet on the go. This app links to many others so that you can tweet directly from the app about what you are working on. You can also use messages to contact friends or group members and keep each other informed.

7 Facebook Tumblr This app enables you to log in to your Facebook account from your ipad. Many games link with this app, allowing you to sign in and play with friends. You can stay up to date by checking the Hood Facebook page. FaceBook can also be used to contact friends and group members. This app enables you to log in to your Tumblr account from your ipad. Use this site to blog text, audio, or pictures and view the blogs of others. Post updates on projects and share links with friends and group members. 5.) ebook Devices Kindle This is the ereader app that you will use to receive your gifted First Year Reads book. Many books for classes can be downloaded through Amazon, which connects to this app. Features include: highlighting, notes, bookmarking, popular highlights, search by location, and search by word or phrase. Audiobooks (P) PDF Notes ibooks Kobo This app has a selection of books, many of them free, that you can listen to. Many popular novels for English can be found here. This is one of the easiest apps to use in order read or annotate PDFs. You can download the PDFs right from Blackboard to this app and organize the documents by date or class on shelves. Features include: highlighting, handwritten notes, and text notes. This app is Apple's version of kindle. You can buy books from the Apple store from your ipad using this app. Very good for PDFs. This app is very similar to Kindle and ibooks. Use of his app verses Kindle or ibooks depends on one s personal preference pertaining to the book s layout or class necessity. Biblioteca De Libros This app has a selection of books and articles in Spanish. There is a section just of free books, and there are other books available for purchase. This is very much like Kindle, but it is not possible to annotate the free books. Libros de Ficción This app is the same as Biblioteca De Libros, but only includes a selection of fiction books in Spanish. It includes some stories that are explored in Spanish 203.

8 6.) Worthwhile Paid Apps QuickOffice Pro HD ($19.99) Create and edit Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets and presentation formats as well as PDFs. You can manage local files, access cloud accounts and works with ipad attachments. Works with all major cloud services and social networks. Documents to Go ($9.99 & Pro $19.99) Documents To Go is an all-in-one application with support for Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint, PDF, Apple iwork and other files and attachments. It includes a desktop application (Win and Mac) to provide 2- way file synchronization and a version with support for Google Docs, Box.net, Dropbox, idisk and SugarSync is also available. Polaris Office ($9.99) Create and edit Microsoft Office documents on your iphone/ipad. Supports many cloud services and has a file manager builtin GoodReader ($4.99) A super-robust file manager for ipad, iphone and ipod touch. You can read virtually anything, anywhere: books, movies, maps, documents and pictures. It will let you annotate, manage, transfer and sync files locally and with multiple cloud services. Photon Flash Player Browser ($4.99) Photon performs like a normal browser until you click on a button with a lightning bolt on it, at which point it starts a remote streaming session that allows you to view Flash content. iswifter (Free Trial for 7 days In App Purchase $4.99) iswifter Flash Browser unlocks your favorite Flash content on your ipad, letting you view videos, Flash websites, and best of all, interactive Flash applications such as Facebook Social Games, popular MMORPGs, & casual games!
