3 PERIMETER, AREA, AND VOLUME Parent Pointer Fencing a yard requires knowing the perimeter of the yard to ensure an adequate supply of fencing materials. Planting grass requires knowing the area where the grass is to be planted. Knowing how much a box will hold requires finding out the volume of the box. Finding the perimeter, area, and volume of geometric figures and objects are concepts that your son or daughter will often use. Then follow the directions on the Create Your Own Figures worksheet. Talk About It After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show what you know. 4 FINDING PERIMETER, AREA, AND VOLUME Perimeter Perimeter is the distance around the figure. It is found by adding the length of the sides. 4 cm 4 cm 3 cm + 2 cm 3 cm = 12 cm The perimeter of this figure is 12 cm. 3 cm 3 cm 2 cm Area Area is the measure of the number of square units needed to cover a figure. It can be found by counting squares. The area of a figure can also be found by multiplying the length by the width: A = l w. 5 cm This rectangle has 10 square units. 2 cm A = 5 cm 2 cm = 10 square cm The area is 10 square centimeters or 10 cm 2 Volume Volume is the number of cubic units needed to fill a container. It can be found by counting cubes. The volume can also be found by multiplying the length by the width by the height. This is shown by the formula: V = l w h. l = 3 cm h = 2 cm This rectangle has 6 cubic units. 5 CREATE YOUR OWN FIGURES Perimeter Your coach wants you to run around the gym. Draw a picture of the gym below and label each side with an approximate measurement. Using those figures, find the perimeter of the gym. Area You want to paint one wall in your bedroom. To have enough paint, you need to find the area of the wall. Make a drawing of the wall below and show its estimated measurements. Using the measurement figures, find out the area of your wall. Volume Cut out the cube nets on the following page and fold on the dotted lines to make cubes. Make a figure that is 2 cubes long by 2 cubes wide by 2 cubes high. You may need to tape the cubes together and your parent or guardian may need to hold them in place for you. Write the formula below for finding the volume of the figure you made.
