6 OVERCOMING REAL BUSINESS CHALLENGES CAPSTONE Problem solving is central to a leader s role, so one of the most important outcomes from the MBA is the ability to apply your knowledge and skills to resolve real-life business issues. PREVIOUS CAPSTONE PARTNERS The Integrated Strategic Analysis Capstone course is the culmination of the MBA. It provides the opportunity to integrate the key concepts you have learned in previous courses in a consultancy project for one of UQ Business School s partner companies. Working as part of a team, you will be operating at the highest strategic level of business and collaborating directly with the CEO. The Capstone project will challenge your capabilities, requiring you to apply your skills in unfamiliar contexts and address complex problems. However the experience is also highly rewarding, and will help to build your confidence in your own capabilities and provide an experience of lasting impact. The MBA Capstone experience concludes with a signature event away from the UQ St Lucia campus, where graduating MBA students present their conclusions and recommendations. The MBA Capstone course was an exciting opportunity to work with an amazingly talented team of fellow students and apply the skills we learned throughout the MBA program to solve a challenging real-life business problem. RICHARD O QUINN MBA Graduate 2014 A team of MBA students worked on our Flight Centre Travel Group business, and with great expertise, presented some strong proposals for growth opportunities. 8 BUILDING EXPERIENCE IN INTERNATIONAL MARKETS In today s international marketplace, employers value graduates with a global business perspective. UQ Business School s international programs allow students to broaden their horizons by gaining exposure to new markets. You will learn how to operate in different business environments with differing cultures and regulations, and have the chance to expand your global network. There is also a once in a lifetime opportunity to collaborate with other internationally renowned business schools and gain experience breaking into two of the world s biggest export markets the US and China. THE WHARTON GLOBAL CONSULTING PRACTICUM The Wharton Global Consulting Practicum (GCP) is one of the best experiential learning opportunities for MBA students that a business school can offer. As the only business school in Australasia to be selected as a parter for the GCP, it gives UQ Business School MBA students the chance to collaborate with the top-ranking Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania to develop a US market-entry or expansion strategy for a paying Australasian company. The program brings together selected MBA students from both Wharton and UQ Business School, and culminates in a week-long practicum hosted by the Wharton School in Philadelphia. The UQ Wharton GCP was the icing on the cake in finishing my MBA. Being able to put some of the theory I have learnt into practice was a great experience. The client, being a new industry for me, forced us to apply critical thinking to a completely different commercial scenario. STEFFI ANDRUCHIW Chief Financial Officer, Harcourts International The GCP program provides UQ Business School students with an unmatched opportunity for both professional and personal development. Bringing MBA theory to life while you work with a global team and produce deliverables for a paying client is incredibly rewarding. The GCP experience pushes students to grow as collaborative team members and as leaders. For me, participating in the GCP was the ultimate MBA experience. Established in 1881, the Wharton School was the first ever collegiate business school. It is recognised as one of the top three in the world. Previous partners have included: JANELLE PYNE Regional Clinical Manager (Asia Pacific), Align Technology FUDAN UNIVERSITY MBA ILAB CONSULTING PROGRAM The Fudan MBA ilab Consulting Program is a seven-month program which brings together MBA students from Fudan University School of Management in Shanghai, and UQ Business School. The program culminates in two days of activities hosted by Fudan in Shanghai, where the team presents its strategy to the client company and introduces it to key contacts. 8 UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA PROGRAM 2016

9 DEVELOPING INSIGHT INTO EMERGING ECONOMIES The rise of emerging markets has been one of the biggest forces shaping the global economy this century. As the world order changes, emerging economies are becoming increasingly important as a source of both new business opportunities and of competition. The MBA International Immersion Tours cover a variety of destinations each year, offering students a unique business and cultural experience and a depth of insight that cannot be matched in the classroom. You will have the opportunity to: Learn about the country s economy and what is driving growth Understand the political system and its impact on business Appreciate the culture, attitudes and social trends Meet local representatives from industry, government and the not-for-profit sector Develop your own networks within the country and identify study and career opportunities The Immersion Tours are designed to broaden students global business experience and translate classroom learning into practice. The Immersion program is an extra-curricular offering and students pay an additional fee for participation. SECRETS OF CHINA S SUCCESS MBA students on the 2014 trip to China learned first-hand how a country relatively new to global business could so quickly be leading the way in many new and established industries, from digital innovation to specialised manufacturing. MEETING INDUSTRIALISTS IN INDIA Delegates on the 2013 and 2014 Immersion Tours to India took part in an industry panel at the High Commission in Delhi, met businesses from a wide range of sectors, attended lectures at the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad, and worked with a microfinance charity in the slums of Delhi. They rated the tour 7 out of 7 in terms of the overall experience and said that their perspectives on India and emerging economies had been transformed as a result. The India Immersion Tour provided us with an insightful and unique overview to the business environment and culture in India. We were fortunate to be exposed to a very thoughtful and diverse set of experiences with ISB lectures, company tours and industry panel discussions. It was a truly exhilarating and energising experience. LAETITIA ST BAKER MBA Student Destinations for the 2015 Immersion Tours include India, China and Argentina. 10 PATHWAY TO LEADERSHIP JOHN HOLDING GLOBAL HR DIRECTOR, WEIR MINERALS ALICE EVANS CEO, FAMILY PLANNING QUEENSLAND John is a senior HR executive with more than 20 years of experience. He spent 10 years with Nortel Networks in Melbourne, Seoul and Singapore, where he was the Asia Pacific Vice President Human Resources. He then moved to Hong Kong working for Avery Dennison where he had full HR accountability for 19,000 people around the world. Shortly after enrolling in the full-time MBA in 2012, he was appointed as Global HR Director for Weir Minerals, which employs 7,500 people providing equipment and services to the mining industry. He is currently located at the head office in Melbourne. I wanted to broaden my knowledge of other functions within the business, and gain a deeper understanding of financial drivers of the firm. UQ Business School s full-time MBA ticked all my boxes. It is contemporary in its design, delivery and content, strikes a good balance between theory and practice, and the support infrastructure is excellent. Whilst the cohort and friendships are amongst my key memories, so too were some of the lectures where the content genuinely challenged your own mental models of how things work in the world. These were simply the best for me. Alice started her career as a physiotherapist before moving into HR and management roles in the health sector. She has extensive experience in rehabilitation, having worked in the UK and Sweden. She has also been Regional Manager of a rehabilitation services provider in Australia. She spent seven years at GroundProbe, a start-up business providing mining safety products. There she helped to lead the organisation during a period of rapid growth, while at the same time studying for her MBA. On its completion in 2012 she won the Director s Award for Leadership. Alice is now CEO of Family Planning Queensland. The MBA initially provided me with a range of theoretical models to study. I moved on to selecting those of most relevance and implementing them in my organisation. The MBA provided safe learning experiences outside my comfort zone, which enabled me to have the selfassurance to take positive leadership steps within my own work environment. It gave me the confidence to lead! The MBA has taught me to frequently reflect on my actions and consider how I might improve my leadership style. As evidence of my growth, I was promoted three times during the program, rising from HR Manager to Executive Director. 10 UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA PROGRAM 2016

11 FROM THE CLASS OF 2014 SAMANTHA RUSH THE STRATEGIST ANDREW MCGHEE THE CONSULTANT MELISSA HARDY THE BUSINESS MANAGER MICHAEL KASPROWICZ THE CRICKETER Having started out in the finance industry in 2001, Samantha has spent most of her career since then in commercial insurance. She has diverse skills and experience including strategy, change management, business analysis, portfolio management, learning and development, and leadership. Halfway through the MBA program, Samantha moved into a Senior Strategic Advisor role with a $1.5bn business. The UQ Business School MBA has helped me develop my knowledge across a broad range of business theory and practice, to a level where I can comfortably converse with just about anyone on any topic. This, coupled with the hands-on experience gained through the Wharton GCP and SEEP programs, has made me an all-round asset. Andrew graduated with a dual Bachelor of Economics and Commerce degree, then joined a small team tasked with setting up a governmentowned company. After seeing it through to successful operation, he undertook an MBA at UQ Business School. Andrew has since joined KPMG s management consulting team, providing advisory services to private and public sector clients across a range of industries including tourism, education and agriculture. UQ Business School offered unique opportunities to build my commercial skillset by getting involved in SEEP, a business immersion tour of India with one of Australia s great cricketers, and the Wharton GCP, one of the most rewarding experiences of the MBA program. After graduating with an international business degree, Melissa began a career as a management consultant with an international firm, gaining diverse industry knowledge and technical skills. She wanted to develop further depth in contemporary business practices and make the most of the experience she had gained. Melissa took the Flexible MBA over four years, alongside her consulting role which included domestic and international travel commitments. Each course in the MBA allowed me to build context and expand my thinking. Assisted by the range of skills that I honed during my studies, I have now moved into a strategy and change leadership role with one of Australia s largest institutional fund managers. Michael Kasprowicz is an Australian international cricketer and a Director of Cricket Australia. Having spent time in India during his career, he has an affinity with the local community and believes that exposing Australian businesses to India could result in mutually beneficial commercial opportunities. I believe the MBA is an all-purpose vehicle to transfer my skills from the professional sporting arena to the business world. The regular career path for a professional cricketer is as a coach or commentator. After 20 years representing Australia, I wanted to do things differently and create something more meaningful such as Venture India, a consultancy that specialises in establishing and growing business relationships between Australia and India. 17 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ACCT7804 Accounting & Business Analysis Accounting involves compiling and interpreting financial information about an enterprise and its activities as a basis for making and evaluating economic decisions about the deployment of resources. A basic knowledge of accounting is important for anyone involved in modern enterprises, whether they are profit-oriented, government, or non-profit entities. The aim of the course is to provide a broad understanding of the accounting discipline to enable students to comprehend, evaluate, interpret, question, and intelligently discuss accounting information; and understand the uses, limitations, complexities and evolving nature of accounting. ECON7012 Business Economics This course focuses on how consumption, investment, production and supply chain choices are made in the face of problems of information and knowledge. These choices need to be coordinated to avoid wasted opportunities, even more so when individuals, firms, or entire economies choose to specialise. Adjustments in relative prices and the incentives provided by profits and losses play major coordinating roles. Coordination is also assisted by planning and social institutions. Even so, coordination failures can still occur, leading to major slumps in employment and international trade. Economics can help to assess when these problems are likely and how they may be dealt with. FINM7805 Financial Management This course provides students with a range of tools required for corporate financial decision-making and personal investing. The course also develops a framework for corporate decision-making centred on the concept of shareholder value. Topics include: financial mathematics; short-term financial management; the use and valuation of debt and equity securities; project evaluation with an emphasis on the discounted cash flow techniques of net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR); individual investing; portfolio theory and diversification; the weighted-average cost of capital (WACC); risk; and the capital asset pricing model (CAPM). MGTS7801 Management Frameworks This foundation course introduces students to the MBA and provides specific areas of foundational knowledge and skills to build on throughout the program. These areas include frameworks for understanding organisations and leadership, as well as individual management and leadership abilities. Building capability begins with a thorough self-assessment, gap analysis, and subsequent identification of professional goals that can be achieved throughout, and beyond completion of the program. MGTS7802 International Management International Management provides an understanding of how the economic, geopolitical and cultural dimensions of the international business environment shape international business investment trade and transacting, and how international firms are managed in this environment. Strategies for market positioning of very large firms, small and medium firms in these complex environments, and the firm structures that emerge to support these strategies, are investigated alongside new and innovative forms of enterprise to capture international advantage. MGTS7803 Integrated Strategic Analysis The final and capstone course, Integrated Strategic Analysis, is delivered as a one week residential that integrates and extends the key concepts from the core courses of the MBA program. This course allows students to analyse, synthesise and present conclusions and recommendations on a current business case. MGTS7807 Operations Design The objective of this course is to develop students understanding of business systems and process design within diverse organisations and to evaluate how they relate to the organisation s corporate objectives, market development, and long-term sustainability. Students will gain an understanding of the important theoretical issues and concepts relating to the design of core business processes, performance reporting mechanisms and accountability. MGTS7808 Information Technology for Business Value How do senior managers use information and communication technology (ICT) systems and services to enable strategy and get more business value out of IT? In this course we take the strategic perspective of the general manager to study how leading firms leverage their IT investments. Our focus centres on IT leadership and IT governance rather than the more technical aspects of IT. Therefore an IT background is not required. MGTS7809 Strategic Human Resources Management This course examines the systems and processes involved in human resource management with the aim of improving organisational performance. Building on an appreciation of the environment in which business operates, the course aims to develop a deep understanding of HR practices such as recruitment, selection and retention of staff as value adding activities. Strategies aimed at managing staff performance and developing staff competence and the professional and ethical application of HR practice are explored at the individual and organisational level. MGTS7810 Leading People & Teams This course develops the skills and knowledge required to lead people and teams effectively in modern organisations. The course specifically focuses on current theory and applied knowledge in this area, starting from an initial focus on the role of individual variables (personality, motivations, perceptions, communication skills, emotional intelligence) and then moving to the nature of teams (team roles, cohesion, norms, formation, identity issues) and the interplay between individual and team factors within organisations. The approach taken also provides opportunities for students to reflect on their own work experiences and to improve their current practice. MKTG7806 Marketing Management This course synthesises current perspectives of marketing and communication theory. Students will be expected to critique traditional marketing management and communication thinking within organisations. This contemporary approach aims to inform management practice better through a synthesis of the interplay between the disciplines of communication and marketing. It will prepare students to think ethically and critically about the communication and relationship processes that occur in organisations between their internal and external stakeholders. TIMS7811 Innovation Leadership Innovation has been described as the fundamental source of competitive advantage. The purpose of this course is to analyse the importance and nature of innovation and how managers can lead innovation for sustainable competitive advantage. The course is based on robust analytical frameworks and contemporary empirical evidence on international best practice in innovation leadership. MBA PROGRAM 2016 UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL 17
