4 SALLY BLEDSOE PEOPLE PARTNER NORTH, NAB JUSTIN GOLDING SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGER, QGC Sally joined NAB as a graduate in 2001, and while working as a Bank Manager she realised that she was also interested in the strategic leadership of the business. She wanted to take her career in a new direction. Sally saw the MBA as a way to broaden her management skills and the part-time option allowed her to fit her studies around her work and personal commitments. Sally is now working in a strategic HR role. I completed the course over a five-year period it was very flexible. I was able to complete some subjects over weekends instead of weekday evening classes, which was useful as I was travelling a lot for work at the time. I found the weekend classes had a very different vibe they were people with more life experience. Studying for a UQ Business School MBA was a completely different experience to doing my undergraduate degree - which was much more theoretical. The MBA was an evolutionary process with practical applications. As well as great teachers and cutting-edge research, the quality of the students was amazing. The other students showed how the theories applied in their real life situations. It was a great collective experience. Justin spent 13 years as a manager with a consumer products company working in locations around the world before he decided to refocus his career. He resigned from his role, returned to Australia and took a year out to do the Accelerated MBA. He is now head of supply chain for the energy business QGC. I thought the MBA was a really good way of using my experience and re-bundling it into another qualification. I think that s the real proposition of the MBA. It enables people with a lot of industry experience to make sense of that experience and put it in the context of the theory. The MBA has helped me to think holistically. Having done engineering and worked my way through the industry, I had a general idea about most business disciplines, but now I see the bigger picture. Taking time out is expensive but you can complete it in a year. I wasn t sure what would happen afterwards but, through the MBA, I took advantage of the network opportunities and met someone from QGC. After my first year with the company it turned out that they needed supply chain expertise and that was my background. The next thing I knew, I was running it for them. 4 UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA HANDBOOK 2015

5 FROM THE CLASS OF EMILY TRUSLER THE ENGINEER SAM ZAMMIT THE SOLDIER STEPHANIE TAYLOR THE POLICE COMMANDER TIM USASZ THE RUGBY PLAYER After graduating as a mechanical engineer, Emily spent six years with a global engineering company where she worked on major infrastructure and mining projects throughout Australia. However, she wanted to use her project and operations experience in a consulting environment to advise companies on investment strategy and project delivery. Emily has since joined Ernst & Young as a manager in the Infrastructure Advisory team. In today s rapidly changing market, it is essential for leaders to adapt and be flexible in the face of ambiguity. The UQ Business School MBA program provided me with the skills I needed to deal with these global issues and leverage the experiential learning that took place through the Wharton GCP and SEEP opportunities. Sam joined the army in 2002 and trained as an officer at ADFA and the Royal Military College - Duntroon. He completed operational postings with the Royal Australian Regiment and a staff appointment at the 13th Brigade headquarters in Western Australia. During his 11 years in the military, he has led soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor. The MBA course helped me to turn what I had already learnt from the army into a commercially applicable skillset and developed my financial analysis and management understanding and all with the support of an extremely strong cohort, many of whom I consider to be lifelong friends. During her 22-year career in the Australian Federal Police, Stephanie reached the rank of Detective Commander, led international teams investigating online child abuse, worked in national security, held a diplomatic post with the Australian Embassy in Washington and represented the country in numerous high-level forums. After deciding to change industry, she wanted to ensure that she was up-to-date with contemporary business practice. She is now a risk and governance advisor with the energy business QGC. The MBA has challenged my thinking about business problems. Through participation in the Wharton GCP and numerous SEEP projects, I have gained a greater understanding of the critical demands on businesses including demonstrating effective leadership and corporate responsibility in tightening fiscal environments. After starting his career in accounting and corporate finance, Tim spent five years as a professional rugby union player. He represented the USA national team for three years and took part in the 2011 Rugby World Cup, captaining the team against the Wallabies. After retiring from rugby, he undertook an Accelerated MBA to help him make best use of the financial analysis and interpersonal skills he had acquired. He has since been working as a consultant, exploring opportunities in the banking industry. The MBA has given me the knowledge and confidence to critically evaluate and solve a diverse range of business issues in different industries. MBA HANDBOOK 2015 UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL 5

6 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MBA WHAT IS AN MBA? The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a masters-level general business degree designed to equip graduates with sophisticated skills and knowledge across the business disciplines. It is by nature and tradition a generalist degree. If you prefer to pursue a specialist postgraduate degree, UQ Business School also offers the following postgraduate business degrees: Master of Business Master of Commerce The AFR BOSS Magazine survey of MBA courses is conducted every two years by the highly-regarded Financial Review Group. In 2013 it ranked the UQ Business School MBA number one in Australia. The survey also questioned alumni and found that over 90 per cent of UQ Business School alumni considered the MBA to be value for money, and 95 per cent felt that it prepared them for a wide range of economic conditions and put them in a better place than their co-workers, especially in light of the GFC. It found that MBA students had gone on to improve their skills in the areas of leadership, teamwork, strategic thinking, problem analysis and decision making since their graduation. Master of Project Management Master of Property Studies Master of Technology and Innovation Management WHO SHOULD DO AN MBA? Students in the MBA program typically have an undergraduate degree and several years of work experience before undertaking the MBA. They see the MBA as the ideal vehicle to equip them to move ahead in their careers, confidently establish their own businesses, or facilitate a transition to a different organisation, industry or profession. HOW DO YOU ASSESS THE QUALITY OF MBA COURSES? There are a variety of independent bodies which provide accreditation and ratings. AACSB International is the leading US accrediting body for business schools, while EQUIS is Europe s most prestigious accreditation. UQ Business School was the first in Australia to earn both of these accreditations. The GMAA, Australia s most influential rating body, assesses the quality of programs each year. The UQ Business School MBA has been awarded five stars, the highest possible rating, for nine years in a row. In 2013 it was also awarded five stars for its corporate links and academic qualifications. The MBA was also ranked 14 th in the world and number one outside of Europe and North America by The Economist. All MBA programs aim to develop participants leadership skills. At UQ Business School, we have developed a unique tool to provide evidence of skills development. YOUR LEADERSHIP JOURNEY Your leadership journey starts the minute you enter your first class, Management Frameworks. In this course, you will use our unique Leadership Capability Framework to assess your current level of skill across key leadership dimensions. You will also undertake the Intelligent Career Card Sort exercise - developed by Associate Professor Polly Parker - as well as using a number of other tools to help you with self-assessment. The course is also designed to provide a structured way to identify the things that really drive you professionally and personally, and you may be surprised where that thinking process takes you. By reviewing the changes during the MBA, graduates are able to structure their ongoing leadership development activities. The Leadership Capability Framework is also available to graduates of the program. The UQ Business School MBA program has a number of key features that help to set it apart and provide added value to students. 6 UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA HANDBOOK 2015

8 BUILDING INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE The Wharton Global Consulting Practicum (GCP) is a once in a lifetime chance for MBA students to develop their business skills by collaborating with the world-renowned Wharton School on an international consultancy project. The program brings together selected MBA students from both Wharton and UQ Business School to develop a US market-entry or expansion strategy for a paying Australasian company, which in the past have included UNIT, Lorna Jane, OneSteel, GroundProbe and WAITOC. It culminates in a week-long practicum hosted by The Wharton School in Philadelphia. Established in 1881, The Wharton School was the first ever collegiate business school. It is recognised as one of the top three in the world and is a member of the prestigious Ivy League. The Wharton GCP was started in 1978 as a program for Wharton MBA students and is now offered by leading business schools in each region of the world. UQ Business School is Wharton s exclusive GCP partner in Australasia. The Wharton GCP was a unique and rewarding opportunity, enabling us to apply the theoretical models we had learnt in class to a real-life client project. This experience accelerated the development of my business and consulting skills. 9 LEADERSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY Singer Christine Anu participates in the Yalari Horizons Leadership Camp Today s business leaders have to take into account a broader range of issues than ever before, including their responsibility to stakeholders and society at large. Therefore effective business leadership increasingly requires the ability to exercise leadership in the wider community. UQ Business School offers MBA students the opportunity to work with community organisations through the Social Economic Engagement Program (SEEP), where they can apply their classroom learning while gaining practical experience. It is also an opportunity for students to give something back to the community, and find out about the challenges facing the not-forprofit sector. Projects have included: Developing a marketing plan in partnership with the Edmund Rice Foundation for Timor Coffee, a critical Coffee Microfinance Program in East Timor Developing systems to increase YMCA warehouse operational efficiencies for the Y-Care Breakfast Program, a training initiative which assists disadvantaged people across Queensland Creating a sustainable corporate funding and employee engagement model for GIVIT, an online charity that matches people who have goods to donate with charities that need them Developing a business plan for Mummy s Wish, an organisation which aims to minimise the negative impact on families when a Mother has cancer Facilitating expansion via an organisational restructure of Lily House, who provide accommodation and training for young women in crisis UQ Business School also continues to work on projects with the Yalari Horizons Leadership Camp. You will have the opportunity to: meet local representatives from industry, government and the non-for-profit sector learn about the country s economy and what is driving growth understand the political system and its impact on business appreciate the culture, attitudes and social trends develop your own networks within the country and identify study and career opportunities Delegates on the 2013 inaugural Immersion Tour to India took part in an industry panel at the High Commission in Delhi, met businesses from a wide range of sectors, attended lectures at the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad and worked with a microfinance charity in the slums. They rated the tour 7 out of 7 in terms of the overall experience and found that their perspectives in relation to India and emerging economies had been transformed as a result of the immersion. The immersion tour is open to full-time and part-time MBA students and feature a variety of immersions to different countries each year. In 2014, two cohorts of students and faculty will visit China and Vietnam as part of the immersion program, and more immersions to emerging economies are planned, including India, Africa, South America and Indonesia. First-hand experience is more engaging and memorable and provides a depth of insight that cannot be matched in class. Many students have told us that their perspective on the country has altered and that they could better distil some of the theory they studied in the applied context. The immersion program has also helped to strengthen UQ Business School s international connections and has been beneficial for students to develop their own networks and identify study and career opportunities. 20 MBA PROGRAM STRUCTURES ACCELERATED The academic component of the MBA is structured so that a foundation course is followed by five pairs of courses delivered in intensive 6 week teaching blocks and culminates in a residential capstone course. MGTS7808 MGTS7802 MGTS7807 MGTS7809 TIMS7811 MGTS7801 Information Technology for Business Value International Management Operations Design Strategic Human Resources Management Innovation Leadership MGTS7803 Management Frameworks MGTS7810 ECON7012 ACCT7804 FINM7805 MGTS7806 Integrated Strategic Analysis Leading People & Teams Business Economics Accounting & Business Analysis Financial Management Marketing Management STREAMLINED & FLEXIBLE The Streamlined 24 month and Flexible part-time options include evening classes, some weekend intensive classes and one-week intensive mode offerings. Program structures vary depending on semester of commencement. If you have chosen the Streamlined program, you will need to study an average of three courses each semester over the 24 months (excluding the winter and summer semesters). We recommend that you choose a combination of weeknight and weekend courses each semester, and if you wish to spread out your workload you may include one or two winter and summer courses along the way. All students completing the MBA program should adhere to the following guidelines for enrolment in: a. MGTS7801 Management Frameworks in your first year of study; and b. ACCT7804 Accounting & Business Analysis and ECON7012 Business Economics BEFORE attempting FINM7805 Financial Management; and c. MGTS7803 Integrated Strategic Analysis in your final year of study. The Flexible program will enable you to study as few as one course per semester. You will have up to seven years from your semester of commencement to complete the MBA program. You are able to take any offering of a course that suits your schedule, e.g. intensive or internal (which means weeknight) or weekend. All we ask is that you take careful note of the key dates attached to the different offerings when you enrol via mysi-net, as not all course offerings are taught in the normal semester times. To avoid any unnecessary academic penalty or financial liability being applied to your record please review the myadvisor website in relation to census dates UQ BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA HANDBOOK 2015
