1 Integrated 6 way scrolling LED display for Arduino PART NO way integrated 60mm x 60mm LED 8 x 8 matrix display for Arduino, cascadeable. Using the popular MAX7219 seven segment display driver chip. Each of the six stages comprises of a MAX7219 driver chip, a common anode 60mm square 8 x 8 led matrix, a 100n capacitor for supply decoupling for each IC, an electrolytic 10 F (observe polarity) capacitor for IC supply smoothing and a 10k resistor to set the current limit for each matrix. (Refer to the MAX7219 data sheet on Jameco for more information on this). I have run a single matrix module board from the Arduino USB supply but to prevent overloading the regulator a suitable 1-2A 5V DC mains adaptor should be plugged into the Arduino's DC power socket. I have tested this module on both the Arduino Mega and Arduino Uno with no problems. There are 5 hook up wires required from the Arduino, to the first unit which need to be connected to the right hand PCB header connections 5V, GND, DIN, CS and CK are required (see Arduino sketch below). To cascade units connect the left hand header DOUT to the right hand header DIN of subsequent units as well as the other 4 wires. The best Arduino sketch to drive this unit can be found here. You will need to amend it to set the number of modules you are using (6 if one kit) and also any pin changes on the Arduino boards especially the UNO. Trim to length Straight Male Header For external connection headers 1 PCB Step 1 - PCB build up In 6 places form lead legs and solder resistors R1-R6 10k to the PCB, followed by polyester capacitors C2, C4, C6, C8, C10, C12 100nF, forming of the legs may be necessary fit as flush to PCB as possible, finally solder the electrolytic capacitors C1, C3, C5, C7, C9, C11 observe polarity the band or the shortest leg is the negative pin, which is to the right in the picture. Step 2 - Fit IC sockets Taking the IC socket locate the notch and solder to the PCB with the notch to the left hand side see picture. Repeat for all six positions.

3 Step 3 - Fit ICs Using a wrist strap to prevent static discharge or using insulated long nose pliers without touching the IC pins align the notch with the notch in the IC socket (pin 1 left most and bottom in picture) firmly seat all 6 IC's into the PCB. Step 4 - Set up LED matrix displays Taking one of the single in line sockets, cut 2 pieces 8 pins long, push the legs of the LED display into the sockets, carefully introduce this assembly to the PCB, with pin 1 of the LED top left on the PCB as shown. The silk-screening on the side of LED matrix denotes which side pin 1 is on See picture.

4 Step 5 - Confirm led display orientation Use picture to confirm LED orientation before soldering. Step 6 - Solder LED matrices Solder the socket pins to the PCB repeat 6 times. The LED displays usual come with a protective film and it is best not to remove this until the board is complete, as they don't want to get scratched.

5 Step 7 - Solder headers to complete PCB build Taking the 2 headers (5 pin) solder them to the right and left of the PCB, you can omit this stage if you want to solder wires directly to the PCB or if you want to fit female rather than male headers depending on your patch wire style. This completes the PCB assembly. Step 8 - Connecting to an Arduino To connect the unit to an Arduino you will require 5 patch wires, using the right hand header (with DIN), connect VCC to Arduino 5V, GND to Arduino GND, CK, CS and DIN to the Arduino pins designated by the Arduino sketch. The best Arduino code to power this unit can be found here. For an Arduino Uno you will need to amend the CK, CS and DIN pins within the sketch for correct operation. Assuming you are using only 1 board, you will also need to amend the MAX_DEVICES setting to 6. To cascade boards lay the 2nd board to the left of the first and connect up the headers using the 5 wires, DOUT of the first board needs to connect to DIN of the second. As previously stated it is best to use a 5V DC 1-2 AMP mains adapter plugged into the Arduino's DC socket so as to not overload the USB connection from your PC. Step 9 - Troubleshoot Ensure all electrolytic capacitors, ICs and LED matrices are installed correctly and that ESD precautions have been taken with the IC's so as not to destroy them with static electricity. Ensure that the Arduino sketch has loaded correctly from your PC, connect a mains adapter and the sketch has been modified so the Arduino pins match the functions of the headers.
