2 The AHA is now are able to offer Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) through the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS) for classroom-based ACLS provider courses and ACLS update courses. Through a new tool located on the AHA Instructor Network, ACLS Training Center Coordinators and ACLS Instructors will be able to invite EMS students to complete CECBEMS-required information and claim their CEHs online. Please note, per CECBEMS, ACLS TCCs and Instructors are required to offer this opportunity to all EMS students in their ACLS classes. To learn more about this exciting opportunity, we have created a short video that provides a demo of the AHA's new EMS Student CE tool. To access the EMS Student CE tool and demo video, please log into the AHA Instructor Network and click on the EMS Student CE link in the top navigation. Inspired by the stories of real women whose lives have been forever changed by heart disease, "Just a Little Heart Attack" is a short film from the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women movement. The film, by Elizabeth Banks, educates women about the realities of heart disease and encourages them to put their health first. View the film at GoRedForWomen.org and share it with five women you love. UPDATE: PEARS Launch Timeline Course materials for the AHA's Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) Course, updated to reflect the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR & ECC, are scheduled to be available in late spring to early summer Updated AHA ECC Spanish Training Materials: Tentative Release Schedule Dates are subject to change at any time. ANNOUNCEMENT: PALS Product Orientation Now Available! To familiarize PALS Instructors and Training Centers with the new PALS Course and materials, the PALS Product Orientation is now available! As a reminder, product orientations will help AHA Instructors understand changes to AHA's core, classroom courses and materials based on the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR & ECC. The PALS Product Orientation is a downloadable, Windows Media Player or QuickTime file, accessible through the AHA Instructor Network. Once logged into the AHA Instructor Network as a confirmed, registered user, you will find this file in the News section, under Guidelines, then G2010 Product Orientations. It also can be accessed from the Courses section, under PALS. PLEASE NOTE: Viewing the PALS Product Orientation is not mandatory, but is highly recommended. It will be most helpful to Instructors and TCCs if they have their new materials in front of them while viewing the orientation. REMINDER: Teaching Heartsaver courses in schools The 2006 AHA Heartsaver CPR in Schools Course and materials will not be reproduced or updated to reflect the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR & ECC. Instead, the AHA has developed a sample agenda to help schools teach the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course in a school setting. This agenda breaks down the course content into 30 to 40-minute "classroom" time periods so that it can be taught over several days. In addition to CPR and AED use, the agenda includes first aid to allow schools to teach those skills. To meet the needs of schools teaching the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course and to reflect that students received their training in school, AHA also has created a Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED course completion card specific to schools (see ECC Products -Announced section below). Simple Cooking with Heart The Walmart Association and the American Heart Association have launched a new program that encourages healthy home cooking called "Simple Cooking with Heart." If you're ready to start cooking at home, we have dozens of recipes and pointers to ease you into the kitchen. Our recipes are simple, nutritious and each has a preparation video so you won't miss a step. Once you've mastered the basics, gather your friends and show off your skills. Download our Simple Cooking Home Party Kit and share the recipes and tips you've learned with others. Who Gets the ECC Beat? The ECC Beat is distributed around the 15 th of each month to the groups below. AHA Training Center Coordinators, please forward the Beat to your Instructors! 3 To download the sample agenda and get more information about teaching in schools, visit the News section of the AHA Instructor Network. REMINDER: Conducting Instructor Courses The Faculty Guides are still required resources for conducting Instructor Courses. TCCs should replace any references to the 2005 Guidelines for CPR & ECC with reference to the new 2010 Guidelines for CPR & ECC. In addition to the Faculty Guides, TCCs also need to use and reference the most recent 2011 products and 2010 science update information available. Many tools, including product orientation videos, science update courses, science videos and more, are available on the AHA Instructor Network and will be extremely helpful in teaching. As always, each Instructor candidate must have his/her own copies of the current provider and Instructor manual. ECC Products - Now Available AHA's ECC Programs Check to make sure the ECC Beat isn't going into their SPAM filters or "junk mail" boxes Make sure they've added the ECC Beat address ( @heart.org) to their address book. Science News Primary Outcomes for Resuscitation Science Studies A Consensus Statement From the American Heart Association The AHA guidelines for the treatment of cardiac arrest are based on high-quality clinical trials, which depend on the selection of a meaningful primary outcome. This consensus statement is intended for researchers, clinicians, reviewers, and regulators in the selection of the most appropriate primary outcome for clinical trials of cardiac arrest therapies. This paper focuses on (1) when after cardiac arrest the measurement time point should occur; (2) what cardiovascular, neurological, and other physiology should be assessed; and (3) the costs associated with various end points.
