2 Lesson 14 New Words: about year old Preparation: Photocopy Practice Sheet 14 Word cards: about year old Review: Drill the words that the students find difficult, and the new words. friend friends family people there home after all your ran three animal saw horse cow pig goat sheep duck goose away jump sit stand skip hop Read the sentences: What can the goat do? The goat can stand and hop and run away. My friend was skipping to her house. The animals want to have fun. Lesson: Introduce the word about. Can the students see a little word in this word? Can they decode it? They can sound the ab and the word out is familiar. Put the word about into oral sentences. Introduce the word year. Talk about the /ea/ - long e sound, and the small word ear. Discuss the present year in today s date. In what year were the children born? (When were their birth days?) How long is a year? Show years. Introduce the word old. We use old in two ways. We talk about being six years old or we talk about someone or something as old. (Grandma is old, but I am not old.) Old can be the opposite to new. Use old as the base word and list as many rhyming words as possible: bold cold fold gold hold mold sold told Practice reading these words. Make silly sentences using as many _old words as possible. Practice printing the words about, year, old. Practice spelling the words. 77
3 Practice Sheet 14a Fill in the blanks. Teach or review the months and then do the bottom part of the page orally. Practice Sheet 14b Review the rhyming words for old. Answer the Yes/No questions. The answers may differ. Have the students justify their answers. Reading Practice Have each child read the words and sentences on the practice sheets to at least three people. Conclusion: Show the word cards for friend friends family people there home after all your ran three animal saw horse cow pig goat sheep duck goose jump sit stand skip hop about year old in random order and have the children read them in unison. Drill them in random order. Read these sentences: The boy is about six years old. I ran about the house. I have fun all year. Grandma is old. On my birthday I will be six years old. Have a child read the sentences, touching under each word. You can also have different children draw a circle around words you say with different colours of highlighter. Later: Practice printing the words. Learn to spell the words. Practice spelling the _old words, too. The children can take the practice sheets home. Have the students read part of the practice sheets to you as they go out the door. 78
