1 WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY PUBLICATIONS GRAPHIC IDENTITY GUIDELINES The Winona State University Graphic Identity Guidelines are central to our communications strategy. An integrated system of graphic elements, including the WSU logo, word mark, seal, athletics logo, positioning statement, and color palette, present the university in a cohesive and memorable way to our internal and external audiences. These guidelines are intended to help communicators use Winona State graphic elements consistently and effectively across all print and electronic media. CONTENTS Winona State University Logo and Word Mark College and Department Signatures Winona State University-Rochester Logo and Word Mark University Seal Positioning Statement Athletics Logo Approved University Colors WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY LOGO AND WORD MARK The Winona State logo paired with the word mark is the primary image for the university. The logo and word mark should be prominently displayed in all publications for internal and external audiences. For flexibility of use in different media and formats, the approved logo ( Flaming W ) or word mark (Winona State University) may be used alone. Guidelines for usage are shown below. Winona State departments, operating units, and organizations use a variety of signatures. Use of the WSU logo and word mark is encouraged on all primary publications that promote the university s mission, goals, and events. Uniform use of the university s primary image benefits all entities when it is not compromised or in competition with other graphic marks. The logo and word mark may not be modified in any manner. The logo and word mark must appear sharp, clear, and undistorted in every application. No other graphic elements can touch, or overlap,. To maintain high quality, reproductions must be made from approved artwork, available from the Publications Office. Any associations or affiliates of the university wishing to use a specific identifier other than the logo and word mark must have prior permission from the Publications Office. The university logo and word mark are registered trademarks and may not be altered in any way. 1

2 Full Logo and Word Mark Word mark serif font: Utopia Word mark sans serif font: Helvetica Condensed Full logo and word mark Black version Full logo and word mark Reverse signature on black or other colors that provide acceptable contrast Logo Alone Logo alone in PMS Pantone Violet For use as a logo representing the university, the Winona State W and WSU flame must always appear together and must not appear alone. Word Mark Alone Word mark alone in Black May be used in reverse signature on black or other colors that provide acceptable contrast Winona State University (and the line graphic element) must always appear together in the word mark. The word Winona must not stand alone as a word mark. 2

3 COLLEGE AND DEPARTMENT SIGNATURES Units within the university, such as colleges, departments, and centers, are eligible for signatures that incorporate the university logo and word mark. While a variety of identifiers are used, the Publications Office has developed a standard signature system for colleges and departments within the university. College Signature (Example) Full WSU logo and word mark (stacked) College signature font: Utopia Italic College Signature WSU logo and signature (horizontal) To clearly identify affiliation, WSU word mark must appear on page with this signature College Signature WSU word mark and signature (horizontal) Department Signature (Example) WSU word mark with department signature Department signature font: Hanshand 3

4 WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY-ROCHESTER LOGO AND WORD MARK The Winona State University-Rochester logo and word mark should be prominently displayed in all publications related to the Rochester campus. The WSU-Rochester logo and word mark may not be altered in any way. Winona State University-Rochester Full logo and word mark (stacked versions) Word mark serif font: Utopia Word mark sans serif font: Helvetica Condensed Winona State University-Rochester Word mark alone WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY SEAL The Winona State University seal is reserved for specialized use such as diplomas, academic awards, official documents, and medallions. The seal must not be used in conjunction with the university logo or word mark. The seal may not be modified in any manner. It must appear sharp, clear, and undistorted in every application. No other graphic elements can touch, overlap, or be combined with the seal. To maintain high quality, reproductions must be made from approved artwork, available from the Publications Office. The university seal is a registered trademark and may not be altered in any way. 5 POSITIONING STATEMENT A community of learners improving our world is a positioning statement carefully crafted to communicate the university s mission. It has been in general use since The full positioning statement may be used in conjunction with the WSU logo and word mark. The positioning statement color should be black or reversed (white) out of a solid color when it is used in conjunction with the logo and word mark. If it appears separately from the logo and word mark, it may be reproduced in any color. ATHLETICS LOGO The Winona State University athletics logo is reserved for use by the Athletics Department and its entities. The athletics logo may be used in conjunction with the WSU logo and word mark to enhance institutional identity or promote school spirit. The athletics logo may not be used in advertising that promotes non-athletics related activities and entities. The athletics logo may not be modified in any manner. It must appear sharp, clear, and undistorted in every application. To maintain high quality, reproductions must be made from approved artwork, available from the Director of Publications. The WSU athletics logo is a registered trademark and may not be altered in any way. WSU Athletics Logo Athletics logo in Black May be used in reverse signature on Black or APPROVED UNIVERSITY COLORS Pantone Violet and White are the primary identity colors for Winona State University. Winona State University Purple PMS Pantone Violet CMYK 98, 100, 0, 0 RGB 51, 48, 146 HEX The logo, word mark, seal, and athletics logo can be produced entirely in black. The correct color is Pantone Black, Standard Black, or Process Black.
