The Nanotechnology cluster in the Tampere Region is formed by three microclusters: the advanced materials platform, aerosol technology and photonics clusters, all emerging from innovative research at the Tampere University of Technology (TUT). Long-term and innovative photonics R&D in the TUT/Optoelectronics Research Centre is the backbone of the laser technology microcluster in the Tampere Region. Well-established aerosol technology research at the TUT/Physics has created a bunch of success stories in imaging and measurement technology business. Tampere-based nanoand photonics technologies have strong synergies and present opportunities for the global cleantech industry. As a whole, the Nanotechnology cluster is stimulating co-operation between research and industry by demonstrating world-class nanotech and cleantech products and business innovations. The spearhead of the Tampere Region is in strong component and system delivery development and product creation....nanotechnology is already a part of almost everyone s life? All modern consumer electronics such as computers or mobile phones are enabled by nanotechnology. LED lamps couldn t have been invented without nano-scale management. Dirt-repellent nanocoated tablecloths or suits, slower-darkening silver jewellery and skis also use nanotechnology.... Nanotechnology can revolutionise the way of doing many things? Protomo is a developing community for start-up businesses where idea developers, seasoned professionals and young talents spar with each other to create products and service development. Protomo draws on people s know-how and determination to make something entirely new. At Suuntaamo, ordinary people can participate in the development of new and innovative products and services and, at the same time, improve their own living environment. Konela is a new centre of innovation for mechanical engineering and energy technology. It is a co-creation space for the developers of next-generation products and services. TAMPERE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Research Projects: Tampere University of Technology (TUT) is Finland s second-largest university of engineering sciences. BRIGHTLASE Semiconductor Technology Group of the ORC/TUT have developed a new laser technology platform for generating high-brightness yellow-orange radiation with semiconductors, which can revolutionise medical applications and be used, for example, to reduce cholesterol levels, remove tattoos and enable local cancer treatment. RAMPLAS aims to provide the theoretical foundations of optical RAM and to introduce novel optical RAM circuit designs. 8 Programmes related to nanotechnology, photonics, materials and sensors: FIMECC DEMAPP: The programme will provide competitive environmentally-sustainable solutions for the the Finnish process, engineering and energy industries leading to better performance by creating new high-performance materials. FIMECC LIGHT: The programme provides potential for saving raw materials and energy and decreasing CO2 emissions over the lifetime of cars and trucks, heavy-duty vehicles and other moving equipment and machinery. FIMECC EFFIMA: The target is to develop new technology and solutions that enable new machines, devices and systems with dramatically lower life-cycle costs compared to what is the international state-of-the-art today. FIMECC HYBRIDS: The programme aims to combine and use common engineering materials in an innovative way and improve their combined properties in several selected application areas. FIMECC BSA: Breakthrough steels and applications aims at optimising life-cycle efficiency and sustainability of steel-based solutions and developing a completely new generation of steel and cast material concepts. 9
