2 Black Box Octet: Using the RS232 Terminal Instructions Updated 12/29/2014 This document will cover the operation and usage of the RS-232 serial terminal for the Black Box Octet switching solution. The default IP address of the Octet KVM switch is ; however, this IP address can be updated by using the RS-232 terminal connection located on the back of the KVM switch. 3 KVM Connection Break Enable All Traps Disable All Traps Access Instructions To establish a RS232 connection to the Octet switch, follow these steps. STEP 1: Before turning on the Octet switch, connect a computer / laptop to the Octet via the DB9 male connector located on the front or back of the switch (connector location depends on model). 4 STEP 2: Open up a terminal emulator program on your computer such as TeraTerm or Hyper Terminal. Configure your terminal using the settings below: Baud: 9600 Data: 8-bits Parity: none Stop: 1-bit Flow Control: None Figure 2. Serial connection. Figure 3. Serial port settings. STEP 3: Once you confirm your RS-232 settings in step 2, you can now power up the Octet switch. During the boot-up process you will see the following screen, which confirms the cable being used is functional. If you do not see any output on the Terminal screen, double-check your serial cable and/or RS-232 connection settings again. Figure 4. Initialization screen. Page blackbox.com

5 STEP 4: You will be prompted with a login, by default you can use the login of admin and by default, the Octet does not have a password setup. Once you enter the main menu, you can create a password; however, if you create a password and forget it, there is absolutely no way to retrieve it. CAUTION: LOST PASSWORDS CANNOT BE RETREIVED; YOU WOULD BE REQUIRED TO SEND YOUR SWITCH BACK TO BLACK BOX TO BE REPROGRAMMED AGAIN. Figure 5. Login screen. STEP 5: At the main menu, you can select the option you wish to review/change by typing in the digits that match the option (example: type 1 to enter Network Configuration ).
