Occupational Field Most of these jobs are in the retail, hospitality, and related service sectors; require at most brief pre-employment training, such as a short 6-to- 12-month vocational course, or otherwise rely on on-thejob-experience; and pay below Broward County s average annual wage. 4 The $45,057 Question: Another Look Total Number of Recently Advertised Jobs in the Occupational Field Here are the lower-skilled, lowerwage positions, primarily in retail sales and hospitality Registered Nurses have a high demand in current jobs, a low supply of jobseekers trained in the field, and a high median wage. 800 These are higherpaying sales, or clerical supervisory, positions Marketing Managers with experiential but have a very high median often no extra wage, and are at nearequilibrium between job educational or training requirements 600 demand and jobseeker supply Entry-level computer support jobs - near These STEM jobs have high wages, and are in demand, but have balance of job demand educational or training barriers to entry, so low jobseeker supply. 400 and jobseeker supply. $10, $30, $50, $70, $90, $110, $130, Median Wage in the Occupation
Broward County s Jobseekers Top 10 Occupations sought by Employ Florida Marketplace jobseekers Occupational Title Total Jobseekers Customer Service Representatives 6,559 Cashiers 2,653 Administrative Services Managers 2,399 Office Clerks, General 1,726 Stock Clerks- Stockroom, Warehouse, or Storage Yard 1,526 Executive Secretaries and Administrative Assistants 1,433 Retail Salespersons 1,372 Receptionists and Information Clerks 1,268 Managers, All Other 1,243 Security Guards 1,212
Local Supply & Demand: A Shifting Target 2013 A total of 191 occupations requiring more than 7,600 positions were identified as having greater projected demand than supply of prospective workers in Broward County. Sales, sales-related, and office positions were the most understaffed, consisting of 7 of the top 10 such occupations representing 30% of the jobs with a demand for workers. Despite the above, the total list included occupations from all parts of the blue collar to white collar spectrum, from construction to medical specialty fields Only 16 occupations, though totaling more than 1,100 open positions, had more demand than supply. Two different types of Sales positions are the top two occupations in demand; those two slots together are more than 50% of the list by total positions needed. The rest of the 2014 list included web developers, two types of teachers, nurses, and medical laboratory technicians, but was overall weighted towards skilled trades work (machine tool operation, mechanical repair, appliance repair, etc.) or supervision of same (in Transportation, Production, and Protective Services). The 2014 no longer includes the more senior medical, scientific, and other professional positions from the 2013 list. Demand for these positions are slowing down from previous years.
A Shifting Target 25.00% Change in Employment in Occupation Groups over time from 2006 to 2014, as percentage of total national workforce Percentage of total regional workforce 20.00% 15.00% 10.00% 5.00% Jan-06 Jun %
Across the Nation 25.00% Local industry makeup for Broward County as compared to the Seattle, Atlanta and Houston Metro areas 20.00% 15.00% 10.00% Broward County Seattle Metro Atlanta Metro Houston Metro 5.00% 0.00%
Global 36% of global employers report talent shortages. This is the lowest level in 7 years on the survey of this metric. National Employer confidence has been increasing, since bottoming out in 2010, with companies steadily increasing job openings since then. 40% of U.S. employers report difficulty filling jobs. Broader Trends
Bringing it Back Home Optimism From a 2014 Survey of local CEOs, 49% expect to hire more full-time staff in the next 18 months, and about 42% expect to hire more part-timers. More than 50% of them feel that growth is expected both locally and throughout the United States. These businesses plan to increase their ongoing investments in Marketing (84%), Technology (81%), and Training (64%).
Bringing it Back Home Strongest Challenge is in hiring qualified applicants The most important issues reported by local CEOs in Broward County across all sectors were: Finding qualified professional employees (~61%) Staying on top of new technology (~58%) Development new products or markets (~57%) CSBD conducted Employer Forums, involving nearly 60 employers from Broward County s six most prominent industry clusters; these employers specifically identified soft skills as their major gap in hiring to fill positions. Soft skills include problem solving, work ethic, time management, reliability & responsibility, interpersonal skills, and analytical thinking.
What is the Problem? Jobs changed during the great recession Looking for the unicorn Wages have not caught up Job seekers waited for the right job Employers don t want to invest in training Bias against the unemployed Jobs continue to evolve especially in the use of technology Lack of training on soft skills
What can you do about it?
