4 Big Data & Vendor Directory 2014 Executive Summary Welcome to the Stratecast Frost & Sullivan 2014 Big Data & Vendor Directory. The Directory includes more than vendors offering products that range from core database technologies and general-purpose analytic software platforms, to specialized application software targeting narrow technical niches and specific industries. Vendors are organized into solution types that are grouped into the five broad categories shown in Exhibit 1. Within the next years, Stratecast believes that one or more of these solution types will be deployed by every enterprise, large and small. In fact, in May 2014, more than half ( %) of large U.S enterprises already had one or more Big Data & Analytic (BDA) solutions in place, with the rest either implementing or planning to implement. 1 Beyond these early adopters, however, are thousands of enterprises, as well as business units within enterprises, whose interest in BDA solutions is growing by the day; but whose basic initial need for a frame of reference and for direction in the BDA market is unmet. The Web offers endless information and commentary from a fragmented universe of sources; but there is no high-level perspective, nor is there a simple starting point for the uninitiated. The BDA Vendor Directory provides the missing frame of reference, higher-level perspective, and a simple starting point. Buyers and sellers alike will benefit from the Directory. 5 Introduction 2 Stratecast gathered the data for this Directory as we developed market research and industry analysis for our BDA clients in As is the case in any growing market, some of the companies listed have been, or are in the process of being merged, acquired or folded, while additional new companies have been, or are being launched. As such, this Directory does not constitute an exhaustive list of all BDA providers and solutions, but rather, a listing of those that are known to Stratecast at time of publication. In the following sections of this report, each category and solution type is clearly and briefly defined, followed by an alphabetical list of vendors who supply those solutions, their Web addresses, their product names, and the additional solution types that they offer, if any. Scroll through the following sections to explore the content, use the Table of Contents to select the desired category or solution type, or use the search function to navigate by key words. Big Data & Core Products and Services The four solution types in this category collectively form the basic foundation for the BDA market. They include the latest developments in general purpose analytic software, the new database technologies, the free-totry data discovery tools, and the growing variety of datasets that are being made available online as free resources or through subscriptions. None of the additional BDA applications included in this Directory would be possible, were it not for these four critical advancements. Analytic Software (General Purpose) From time-tested standards, like MATLAB and SPSS, to the latest innovations, like The R Project for Statistical Computing, known simply as R, these solution types offer flexible, programmable tools to analyze datasets from both traditional and newer data stores. Although primarily geared toward static data, some also can ingest and process operational and transaction data. For more real-time options, see the solutions for Real-time, Log and Sensor, in the Business Process and Strategic category.
