3 Introduction What Are the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts? The standards are a shared set of expectations for each grade level in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. They define what students should understand and be able to do. The standards are designed to be more rigorous and allow for students to justify their thinking. They reflect the knowledge that is necessary for success in college and beyond. As described in the Common Core State Standards, students who master the standards in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language as they advance through the grades will exhibit the following capabilities: 1. They demonstrate independence. 2. They build strong content knowledge. 3. They respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline. 4. They comprehend as well as critique. 5. They value evidence. 6. They use technology and digital media strategically and capably. 7. They come to understand other perspectives and cultures.* How to Use This Book This book is a collection of practice pages aligned to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and appropriate for third grade. Included is a skill matrix so that you can see exactly which standards are addressed on the practice pages. Also included are a skill assessment and a skill assessment analysis. Use the assessment at the beginning of the year or at any time of year you wish to assess your students mastery of certain standards.
