2 This guide is to assist you in classifying the occupation of your employees for the purpose of providing them with insurance in your MLC MasterKey Business Super Plan.

3 Occupational ratings guide for insurance An occupation classification is determined not by the employee s title but by their duties. This guide covers a wide variety of occupations. In some cases, determining the occupation classification of an employee may be straightforward, for example, as for an accountant or a professional football player, while in other cases, the classification may be a little more complex. When you ve located the correct classification for the occupation of your employee, you ll need to provide us with this information. If you re a user of MLC SuperEzy (our Internet payment facility) this can be provided online, or be provided at the time you send us details of any new employees you wish to enrol in your Plan. Determining occupation classification The occupation for your employees is determined by the duties they perform, not by their title. For example, the managing director of a small construction company who is a licensed plumber by trade and who performs manual work on building sites is not classified as white-collar professional because of his title as managing director. ather, he is classified as blue collar due to his manual duties as a plumber. Always obtain and consider full details of the person s actual duties. Don t classify their occupation on the basis of general terms such as company director, manager, contractor, driver or labourer alone. The business or industry should be considered together with the particular occupation. Unlisted occupations Occupations not included in this guide should be rated in accordance with other similar listed occupations. Two occupations Where a person has more than one occupation, they should be rated for the occupation that represents the higher risk. For example, a clerk who has a second job as a waiter would be rated as heavy blue collar. Consideration will be given to a more favourable rating where the person spends less than 20% of their total work time in the more hazardous occupation. Note: when providing details of occupations to us, you may not be aware of an employee s second occupation. Where this is the case, you need only classify the person on the basis of the information known to you. Occupational ratings guide for insurance 3

4 Employment status categories Part time workers egardless of the occupation rating of an employee, income protection insurance is not available if they work less than 15 hours per week. Casual workers egardless of the occupation rating of an employee, income protection insurance is not available to casual workers. Seasonal or contract workers egardless of the occupation rating of an employee, income protection insurance is not available to seasonal or contract workers. Members in fixed term employment Where an employee s occupation rating makes them eligible for income protection insurance, and the employer has elected to include this benefit, the income protection benefit period is limited to the remainder of their contracted period of employment. ating classification and description s are grouped in the following categories. To be accepted in this classification, the employee must be in one of the occupations listed in this category. The classification may also apply to degree-qualified business executives, who are well established and earning a net minimum of $100,000 pa in addition to the requirements outlined for the classification. To be accepted in this classification, the employee must be in one of the occupations listed in this category. Alternatively they should be in a similar occupation with either no manual duties or very light-skilled duties such as bank tellers or dental nurses. These occupations should meet the following requirements: Have no exposure to unusual occupational hazards; and An emphasis on mental rather than physical work. This classification includes office staff and salespeople not engaged in heavy lifting or deliveries. This classification includes jobs with less than 20% light manual work or direct supervision of manual workers. For example, a site foreman who spends the majority of time in a site office or performing supervision duties. This classification consists of employees in hazardous occupations or in occupations which present special difficulties in assessing the insurer s risk.
