Human Biology is an introduction to the principles of biology using humans as a model organism. The course covers the scientific method, biomolecules; cell theory, cell reproduction, heredity, human genetics, development, structure and function of the human body; and genetic engineering and biotechnology. Lecture and Lab is combined and must be taken together to receive credit for the course. See Attachments below and Bb for MasteringBiology (MB) details (MB is REQUIRED). Grading: The course has both a lecture and a laboratory component. The Lecture component will comprise 70% of your final grade. For the lecture component, there will be two exams during the semester and a final exam. Exam 1 and 2 will have an equal weight of 22.5 %, while the Final Exam will have a weight of 25% of your final grade. The final exam will NOT be comprehensive. Each exam will have a section requiring the use of scantrons therefore you should bring a number 2 pencil to the exam. The Lab will make up 25 % of the course grade. Labs will meet once a week starting this week, and you will have a teaching assistant for lab. Questions concerning the lab should be directed to your laboratory instructor. A Lab syllabus and a course contract will be made available to you during your first lab meetings. Labs are held every week during the semester. Mandatory safety training will be held during week one of lab. Please remember that attendance for Lab is mandatory. The remaining 5% of your lecture grade will be from announced group assignments and quizzes, which will be taken in class approximately one week before exams. All assignments/quizzes/reading Questions (MB) will have equal weight. A grade of C minus or better is required to receive credit for this course.
2 2 Grade Breakdown: Exam % Exam % Final Exam % Announced Quizzes/Reading Q.s (MB) Assignments 5.0% Lab grade 25.0% 88% - 100% A 78% % B 55% % C 50% % D <50% F Grading Scale for Final Grade (+ and will be used. Example: B-, B, B+, etc.) But are not determined until the final grades are calculated. There will be no exceptions. No more than one lecture exam can be made up during the semester. In order to take a make-up exam, written documentation will be required during the final exam time. Written documentation includes medical, dental, and legal excuses from your physician, dentist, or lawyer. Notes from Pas, chiropractors, auto repair technicians, public transit problems, and podiatrists are generally not accepted. I will need a copy of the documentation for my files. PLEASE BRING YOUR MEDICAL OR LEGAL EXCUSE WITH YOU, AND TURN IN YOUR EXCUSE JUST AFTER YOU FINISH YOUR FINAL EXAM. If a medical, dental, or legal excuse is not presented by the student, then a missed exam will result in a grade of zero percent. Withdrawals: Monday, September 12 is the last day to drop a course. Tuesday, October 25 is the last day to withdraw from the course. Makeup Quizzes: There will be no make-ups given for missed quizzes. Please, bring us any excuse note ASAP. FINAL EXAM: The final exam will take place on Thursday, December 15, from 5:30-7:30pm in RM 342. The final exam for lecture will not be comprehensive. The final exam will cover the final third of the course. Student Learning Outcomes: The student will demonstrate biology fundamental knowledge concerning biological macromolecules, the structure and function of cells, basic life processes of humans, knowledge of human heredity, knowledge of the structure and function of DNA, knowledge of the structure and function of the major systems of the body, and knowledge of evolution.
3 3 Inquiry-based approaches will be used to help students understand the impact of science in their daily life and the environment. Students will be able to recognize the importance of biology in real-world situations. Assessment: Biology fundamental Knowledge of these processes and concepts will be assessed through the use of exams, assignments/quizzes/reading questions. Furthermore, application of biology knowledge to real-world situations will be assessed through in-class discussions and survey. Cell Phones: Please have consideration for your fellow students. Please turn off all cell phones, iphones, and tablets before the start of each class. Please familiarize yourself with the student code of conduct. Final Grade: If you feel that your final grade is incorrect I will recheck all of your grades to identify any potential errors. Please make sure that you fill in your name correctly on the blue Scantron sheets to minimize any errors. If you are not satisfied with your final grade for the course please contact the Biology Department ombudsperson, BLS room 159 B. REMEMBER: If you miss a lecture exam with a valid excuse you need to schedule the makeup exam within 2 weeks of the missed exam. The makeup exam will need to be taken immediately following the final exam during the time scheduled for the final exam. Only one makeup lecture exam is allowed.
