ESSENTIAL SUPPORTING INFORMATION 1. Accommodation and recommended arrival date Accommodation is set up through the Lyon III International Association. Please see the registration information for accommodation and additional registration on the Association s website (p.1). Descriptions of the residences can be found on the site. Upon arrival in Lyon, students will need in many cases to go and see Fellah Moufouk (fellah.moufouk@univ-lyon3.fr) at our International Relations Department before they can check into their housing. This means students should make every effort not to arrive at a weekend when the university is closed. With some housing options, students might be able to check in directly without reporting to the university first. For these options, you will need to obtain from Fellah the telephone number or address of the residence so you can set up an appointment ahead of time. Be aware that many residences close their checkin by 4 p.m. We recommend that students arrive several days before the orientation course or information day meeting to get settled into their housing facilities. Housing check-in is usually closed over the week-ends and generally after 5 pm, even on week days. 2. Orientation course and information day meetings a. Students may choose to attend an orientation course (see below). Orientation courses are only available for the first semester except for a two-week intensive introduction to French law at the start of the Spring semester. Students not attending these should attend a journée d information or information day meeting for their particular area of study (for dates, see calendar, p.1). b. The information day meeting takes place at the beginning of both the Autumn and Spring semesters. The orientation courses take place at the beginning of the first semester only, c. The orientation course at the beginning of the academic year is also highly recommended for immersion in the French language. There is a charge of 210 euros per course. 2
The goal of this orientation program is to welcome and facilitate the integration of exchange students within the university system and the city of Lyon. This course is not mandatory but recommended. It enables students on the one hand to immerse themselves linguistically but also to get better acquainted with the specificities of the French university education system from a content perspective as well as a methodological perspective. In each course, a presentation of the various disciplines and courses offered at Lyon 3 will help students to make their final course selections. Also integrated in the orientation course are academic advice-giving sessions for choice of courses. Social and tourist activities are also offered so students can get familiar with the city of Lyon. To make this immersion all the more efficient, orientation courses have been divided into different disciplines and students should therefore register for the one that corresponds to his/her main area of academic specialization. There are four different orientation courses, depending on the academic area of the student: Business, Foreign languages, Literature & Humanities and Law. Students should think carefully about which course suits then best, and consult the website for exact course details and registration. Business An introductory course on the French accounting system, a French language course specifically oriented to business terminology, game-oriented company activities, French culture, tutorials to determine choice of courses, presentation of the different Faculties. Visit of Lyon, Café théatre, international cocktail. Foreign Languages and Business-oriented courses (LEA) A course on the history of the French language, a course on administrative organization in France, an introductory course to French economy, an introductory marketing course in French and FLE classes French culture, tutorials to determine choice of courses, presentation of the different Faculties. Visit of Lyon, Café thêatre, international cocktail. Literature & Humanities Brief literature overview course 16 th -18 th century, literature 19 th -20 th Century, history of the French language, overview of French history and FLE French culture, tutorials to determine choice of courses, presentation of the different Faculties, Visit of Lyon, Café thêatre, international cocktail. 3
Law Introduction to civil and criminal law in France, panoramic overview of French history and French language class oriented to legal vocabulary. French culture, tutorials to determine choice of courses, presentation of the different Faculties, Visit of Lyon, Café thêatre, international cocktail. 3. DEUF program Students coming to Lyon to study courses in French are registered here as DEUF students. The DEUF is a Lyon 3 university diploma which is in fact only awarded to students who complete 40 ECTS credits over the year and who attend French Language Classes (FLE) and pedagogical tutorials. There are 2 hours of FLE classes per week for all incoming exchange students, following a test of proficiency of French at the start of each semester. Whilst the choice of courses followed at Lyon 3 is ultimately to be established between students and their own university, the weekly FLE classes and the pedagogical tutorial are deemed mandatory by Lyon 3. The FLE class is worth 4 ECTS credits per semester and the pedagogical tutorial is worth 2 ECTS per semester. Students coming to Lyon 3 can select courses from all faculties. However students definitive courses choices are made UPON ARRIVAL at Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University. We cannot guarantee that students will be able to do all the courses they choose before this time because we do not know class timetables until just a few days before classes start. This means that overlap is inevitable and in some rare cases, the class may not be offered. You can choose classes from the following Faculties at Lyon 3 : Faculté de Droit (Law) Institut d Administration des Entreprises - IAE (Business School) Faculté des Lettres et Civilisations You will find here courses in Literature (modern and classic), history, geography and Information & Communication. Faculté des Langues LEA (Langues Etrangères Appliquées) This degree combines foreign language instructions with business courses. Language courses are more applied to every-day business language LLCE (Langues, Littérature et Civilisations Etrangères). Classes are more classical in their approach. Faculté de Philosophie For further information on courses, go to our site, Click on 'International', then 'DEUF'. Next click on 'voir la fiche diplôme'. On the right hand side of the page, you will see 'Livrets de cours' (course booklets) for each faculty. At the moment, these relate to the current academic year, but they will soon be updated for
4. The SELF Programme Lyon 3 proposes a program called the SELF (Study English in Lyon France) in which classes are taught in English. There is a choice of business, law and arts subjects. Each class runs for one semester (1 st semester or 2 nd semester) and represents 6 ECTS credits / semester. There are two types of exchange student who may do this program. A. Firstly, students who have a very low level of French and who do a minimum of 4 SELF courses per semester. These students follow an intensive French language course in the first two weeks of the program and then French language courses throughout the semester. Details and course descriptions can be found on the SELF website (Stage 1 : SELF). Exchange students doing a minimum of 4 SELF courses should be in Lyon for 3 rd September, for the start of the intensive French language course. They must enrol on the Application Form (p.1) and must submit their choice of SELF courses. Having done purely SELF courses in semester 1, students staying the whole year may opt to do courses in French in different Lyon 3 Faculties in semester 2. B. Secondly, students taking just one or two SELF courses per semester, and who do most of their courses in French in the different Lyon 3 Faculties (registered as DEUF students - see n 3 above). These students can only be integrated into SELF courses if there are places available. Course descriptions can be found on the SELF website (Stage 1 SELF) and students wishing to do one or two courses must enrol on the Application Form (p.1) and should submit their choice of SELF courses, but these are later confirmed in Lyon. We cannot guarantee places, but students should certainly try : most students have been accommodated in the past. Students taking just one or two SELF courses per semester register upon arrival in Lyon as DEUF students either during Orientation courses or Information day meetings (see n 2 above). For further information on courses, go to our site, Click on International, then SELF. 5. Further course information Foreign students may choose classes from most of the Lyon 3 course offering. France has recently switched to the European LMD system (Licence-Master-Doctorat). Academic years and semesters are listed as follows in the course booklets : Licence (Represents the 1 st 3 years of study) Master (Represents the 4 th and 5 th year of study) Autumn Spring Autumn Spring Year 1 Semester 1 Semester 2 Semester 7 Semester 8 Year 2 Semester 3 Semester 4 Semester 9 Semester 10 Year 3 Semester 5 Semester 6 In the course listings, you will see the following terms : CM, TD and ECTS. 5
CM stands for lectures These classes are dispensed in amphitheaters or large classes. If you attend a CM, you will usually have a written or oral final exam (TE) and sometimes also a mid-term exam. TD stands for Travaux Dirigés or Tutorials. These are smaller classes and are usually associated with a CM. The TDs normally start two weeks after the CM lectures. These classes are more practical in orientation and apply the concepts learned during the CM. Here, your attendance is mandatory and attendance is aken at every session. You will have class participation, papers, group projects, and regular exams that you will be graded on. Where a CM has a corresponding TD, you need to do both to obtain credit. ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System and is the new system of credit started with the LMD reform. 6. Courses exclusively for exchange students The Faculty of Languages puts on a one and a half hour per week translation course for exchange students, French-English and English-French, in both the autumn and spring semesters. (2 ECTS? under review) It also runs a translation class in the language laboratory of one hour per week, French- English and English-French, in both the autumn and spring semesters. (2 ECTS? under review) A reasonable level of proficiency in French is required for these two classes. 7. Cost of living Per month... Accommodation: Transport: Food: Books and material: Others: Total
