It is not often heard that a company spends much energy and many resources to generate innovative ideas only to float new companies that can commercialize the idea and at the same time allow competitors to use it. The surprising logic is that it has greater value to Shell to accelerate the innovation process than to keep the ideas for themselves. It was also interesting to hear how many new ideas were generated by combining existing knowledge from different disciplines and industries - i.e. that networking and communication is a powerful supplement to research. Our next meeting is hosted by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). We will get an overview of EOR techniques in the past and in the future and I look forward to hearing if some of the existing ideas that originated when the oil price was lower than it is today deserve more attention now. I am also curious to hear which new ideas are brewing in the research community. We also have an after dinner talk on perspectives and challenges for the Petroleum Engineering Education in Denmark. For newcomers to the industry, this meeting is an excellent opportunity to learn something while the more experienced people may brush-up existing knowledge and be surprised by some of the new ideas. I hope this agenda will bridge gaps and strengthen ties between the industry and the researchers in Denmark. And just in case this agenda is not inspiring enough for everyone, we have engaged with the Danish chef Søren Gericke who will come up with an exquisite menu. For our non-danish readers, Søren Gericke is the Danish equivalent to Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey. Your contribution to this evening s program is to adhere to the chefs orders and sign-up before Easter on March 16th because the menu requires preparations that leave no flexibility to late comers! 4 Biography Ida Lykke Fabricius is Associate Professor at the Technical University of Denmark. She holds a Ph.D. in Technical Geology (1989). Her research interests include linking technical geology, rock mechanics and rock physics. She is a member of SEG and SPE. Erling H. Stenby is the Director of Center for Phase Equilibria and Separation Processes (IVC-SEP) and since 1996 Professor of Applied Thermodynamics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Chemical Engineering). He holds a Ph.D. degree from DTU (1986) where he has been employed for 25 years. He has been a Visiting Professor in France and China. One of his main research interests is EOR on which he has worked closely with many companies and universitites over the years. He has co-authored more than 100 scientific papers and supervised more than 25 Ph.D. students. Helle Foged Christensen received an M.S. (1988) in geomechanics and structural engineering from the Technical University in Denmark. She joined Danish Geotechnical Institute (now GEO) in She has been involved in consultancy work and research projects on rock mechanics for North Sea chalk and sandstone. She is a member of SPE and Assistant Professor at the Danish Technical University Alexander A. Shapiro acquired his M.Sc. and later Ph.D. from the Moscow Gubkin Petroleum University. Since 1995 he has worked at IVC-SEP (DTU Chemical Engineering). He was appointed Associate Professor in 1999 and has published more than 60 scientific papers and book chapters about equilibria and transport in porous media, including problems of petroleum engineering science and technology. He has supervised several Ph.D. students in this area, in projects sponsored by the petroleum industry. A.A. Shapiro teaches petroleum related courses at the DTU, as well as a course on mathematical modelling. Enhanced Oil Recovery a DTU Perspective Past and Future by Erling H. Stenby Rock Mechanical Aspects by Ida L. Fabricius and Helle F. Christensen The Technical University of Denmark has been active in EOR research for 25 years. With the current level of oil price EOR has become an attractive option many places in the world. The research needed to make EOR happen is now getting increased attention after more than ten years of moderate interest from the industry. Much of what was learned earlier has been forgotten and progress in many scientific fields has opened new possibilities. Some simplification made in the 1980 s are not needed anymore and some of the assumptions made then have turned out to be wrong. At this meeting Erling H. Stenby and Ida L. Fabricius from DTU will give their views on EOR from the past and into the future with a focus on both fluids, flow, and rock properties. EOR requires excellent skills, hard work and not least creativity. Therefore it is appropriate to let creativity be a theme of the evening as well. We have been able to persuade the most creative chef in Denmark through several decades, Søren Gericke, to cook our dinner. The today highly acclaimed Nordic Cuisine was in reality invented already 20 years ago by Søren Gericke, and since then he has refined his cooking by going back to basics. The situation may well be the same for us as we discuss the reinvention of EOR. During dinner the theme will be Petroleum Engineering Education in Denmark: Perspectives and Challenges. This will hopefully be a lively discussion session with the members based on introductory statements from the industry and a short presentation from DTU. Alexander A.
