1 Offshore Technology- Industrial Asset Management - Master's Degree Programme Credits: 120 credits Level: Master's degree (2 years) Offered by: Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science Grade name: Master i teknologi / sivilingeniør Full-time/Part-time: Full-time Duration: 4 semesters Language of instruction: English Introduction With a master's degree in Industrial asset management students will acquire expertise that is much in demand in offshore and various other industrial sectors today. It is a multidisciplinary program that combines engineering disciplines with important management components to provide the new generation of engineers with core competencies for challenging and competitive carriers. This includes for example, operations and maintenance, cost engineering and economics, diagnostic and prognostic engineering, safety and risk management, industrial services, decision engineering and performance management, as well as the interaction between the humans, technology and organizations. Course contents, projects, and problems in the program are often taken from the offshore industry, but the program is designed in such way that the methods and principles can also be commonly used in other land-based industries. A bachelor's degree in all engineering subjects qualifies for further studies in Industrial asset management. Graduated students will obtain competitive competence on Master degree level in technology, and will acquire core knowledge within engineering and management of advanced, complex and integrated industrial facilities/systems. They will be able to apply the knowledge obtained in challenging industrial environments in all life cycle phases, (i.e. design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance, modification and removal). In particular, the candidates will be qualified to participate and manage operations, work with development and implementation of new technology, and apply technical methods and principles for the offshore petroleum industry above seabed. As the study program consists of general principles and methods, they will also be able to meet and solve challenges on page 1

Hence the graduates will be qualified for many attractive job positions in offshore as well as traditional industries. PROGRAM CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND PROGRESSION: Consisting of a total of 120 ECTS, this master program is made up of 20 ECTS basic methods subjects (B) which consolidate and continue the mathematical and scientific foundation from the bachelor program. 25 ECTS are core offshore subjects (C), which will give the students a broad and common platform in offshore technology as well as complement and expand subjects from the bachelor program. The remaining 75 ECTS consist of 35 ECTS of compulsory specialization subjects (S), 10 ECTS of elective subjects (E) and a final master thesis of 30 ECTS (M). The faculty will offer a list of recommended electives. The students themselves must check that they have the necessary basic knowledge to be able to tackle these courses. Other electives must be approved by the department, but the students will have considerable freedom in putting together their own combinations depending on personal interests and qualities. The master thesis may be prepared either at the faculty or in cooperation with industry. Many students base their master theses on work done in companies within the petroleum industry, but also in companies within other industries as well. In order to be assigned a topic for a master paper, satisfactory progression must be demonstrated as cited in Regulations for Master's thesis. UiS wishes to offer all its programs as planned, but courses still have to be subject to availability of resources and a minimum student enrollment. Also the content and scope of the courses will necessarily have to change over time because of professional development, use of new technology and general social change. The course work consists of lectures, project assignments, obligatory and voluntary exercises and laboratory work. 3 Knowledge The candidate has advanced and multi-disciplinary knowledge within the academic field and specialized insight into selected areas of the field. The candidate has thorough and relevant knowledge within engineering and management of advanced, complex and integrated industrial assets (e.g. production systems/ processes, manufacturing facilities, technical systems/ machines/ equipment, etc.) in all life cycle phases (i.e. concept development and design, construction and assembly, installation and commissioning, operation and maintenance, modification and up gradation, and removal and recycling). The candidate has knowledge within the academic field that can be applied to technology development and innovation in new areas with practical and/or theoretical importance. The candidate has knowledge to analyze practical or academic problems within the field, on the basis of the history, traditions, distinctive character as well as industrial and societal needs. Skills The candidate can analyze existing theories, methods and interpretations within the academic field and work independently with practical and theoretical problem resolution. The candidate can independently identify, map, analyze and resolve challenging production/ process/ manufacturing problems by applying existing theories, methods and interpretations in the field. The candidate can use relevant methods and knowledge for research and scholarly / professional development work in an independent manner. The candidate can analyze and deal critically with various sources of information and apply them to structure and formulate practical and/or academic arguments. The candidate can carry out a independent, limited research or development projects under supervision, and in accordance with current research ethical norms. General competence The candidate can analyze relevant academic, professional and research ethical challenges and be qualified to participate in developing and implementing new technology, methods and principles as well as engineering or managerial solutions for the industry. page 3

The candidate can communicate extensive work professionally and independently, and master terminology, language and expressions in the academic field. The candidate can communicate academic issues, as well as analyses and conclusions in the field, both with specialists and the general public. The candidate can contribute to new thinking and innovation processes. Admission Requirements A bachelor's degree in engineering with a relevant subject area with at least 30 ECTS of subjects in mathematics and statistics. Those who have a bachelor degree in any engineering discipline qualifies to apply. However, students with relevant background in mechanical, civil, production, process technique, mechatronics or similar, with a strong focus on production management (machines, equipment, processes, production facilities) engineering may be given priority. Furthermore, students with relevant industrial experience may also be given priority. Applicants must demonstrate competitive academic standards. The Faculty has set a minimum grade limit at 3.0 (A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1) for admittance. For international students, normally, the level of grads of those that are shortlisted is equivalent to a Second Class Upper Division or better. Applicants with at grade level equivalent to Second Class Lower Division, or lower, will not be considered for admission. Proficiency in English is required. The main area for job positions is the offshore petroleum industry. However, as the core of the study program consists of and rests on general principles and methods, the candidates are also well qualified for many attractive job positions in traditional onshore industry. In general, the candidates with a degree in Offshore Technology will be well qualified for positions within various industries that design, build, operate, remove and recycle advanced, complex and integrated production facilities like oil and gas platforms, subsea production facilities, drilling rigs, pipelines, refineries and a wide variety of mechanical and process industry. Typically companies that are involved in petroleum operations and management like oil companies, engineering companies, service industry, drilling and subsea contractors as well as manufactures of high-tech equipment and machinery for the oil and gas industry. Many will also find interesting jobs within research, education, consulting or in public sector devoted to control, regulation and law enforcement of the oil and gas industry. It is important to note that environmental and safety issues will be the most highlighted areas and those of most public concern in relation to the offshore oil and gas industry in the decades to come. This will be true both locally and globally. Moreover, industrial asset management is a major factor in dealing with environmental and safety issues and a larger part of the total running cost for an offshore petroleum production facility is related to this area. These issues are therefore of great concern for the industry and many of the organizations and firms are now taking focusing on reducing the impact of their activities with respect to the environment, the health and safety of their personnel, as well as the society as a whole. page 6

7 A completed master's degree with a minimum average grade B may qualify for admission to the PhD program in Offshore Technology at the University of Stavanger. Study Abroad Student exchange semester: UiS is part of the NORDTEK-network who arrange exchange possibilities for master level students for 23 Technical Universities and University Colleges in the Nordic countries. Exchange will easiest be done in 2nd semester (spring) and 3rd semester (fall). The Department has an ERASMUS agreement with Newcastle University (Department of Marine Science and Technology), Great Britain where the Department can send 2 students per year.
