Make a traditional Native American food to share with the class. Explain how it is made and which cultural region (or tribe) it is from. Make a Native American tool using only natural materials, such as branches, grass, animal bones, tendons, and rocks. (No glue, tape, or string.) Explain how it is made and how it could be used. Make a replica (miniature) American Indian village or house. Explain how it is made and which Native American tribe would have used it. Teach the class a Native American game or sport. Research ONE of the following topics (jobs, houses, religions, clothing, tools, food) for TWO separate tribes. Write a report comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between the two different tribes. Create own totem pole and explain its meaning. (Northwest Coast) Draw a timeline of a whale hunt (one picture for each stage), with written explanations. (Northwest Coast) Make a kachina doll, and explain its meaning and how it is made. (Southwest) Draw a timeline of the buffalo hunt, with written explanations. (Great Plains) Learn and perform a story (or conversation with another student) using Plains sign language. (Great Plains) Hiawatha was a chief who visited the Iroquois tribes, asking for an end to their fighting. Pretend you are Hiawatha. What would you say to the Iroquois tribes? Prepare a speech to give to the class. (Eastern Woodlands) Research farming in the Eastern Woodland tribes and today. Tell how they are different and how they are the same. Other ideas: Present your research by making a song, making a powerpoint, or making a movie! Anything else you can think of! Let your imagination soar!
