Staff members from NGU International Office will help them with the application process, visa procedure and any other questions they may have. They will also receive NGU s Course Catalogue for International Students which describes all the courses instructed in English. 7
5.2 Finding Accommodation Students are recommended renting a room in the dormitories of Nuertingen or Geislingen. Students have to apply online for the rooms at the Student Union Tübingen-Hohenheim. Staff members from NGU International Office will assist them with the application. Rooms in the Nuertingen dormitories are about 230 Euros, in Geislingen they vary between 200 and 270 Euros. The deposit in both cases is 400 Euros. Rooms have to be paid for the whole semester, i.e. 6 months, even if students do not stay there for the whole period. If students prefer to have private accommodation, they will get information on how and where to find private rooms/apartments. 5.3 Buddy Program Every exchange student will be paired with an NGU student who will help him/her to do the formalities and get settled in Nuertingen or Geislingen and at the university. Exchange students can get into contact with their buddy before their arrival and find help with their questions and problems during the semester. 5.4 Pick-up Service Exchange students will be picked up in Nuertingen, either: - at the bus station, if they arrive at Stuttgart airport or - at the train station, if they come from Stuttgart main station. In Geislingen exchange students will be picked up at the train station. 5.5 Orientation Week Exchange students are requested to arrive on Thursday or Friday before the orientation week starts (at the latest). They can move into their room as from the 1st of September (winter semester) or 1st of March (summer semester) if it is not a week-end or public holiday. The orientation week takes place 7 days before lectures start. During these days many formalities will need to be settled. Students get help from the International Office and are accompanied by their buddies when they need to go to the municipal offices or the bank Formalities to be settled during the Orientation Week: Registration at the local municipalities Application for a residence permit Opening of a bank account Payment of social service fee (approx. 100 Euros) 8
5.5.2 Learning Agreements and Courses Exchange students receive the link to the online Course Catalogue which includes all courses that are taught in English. Before their arrival they should register for their courses online using our Learning Management System NEO. Andrea Heissler, study abroad advisor for incoming students, assists exchange students in dealing with all questions which may occur before and during their stay at Nuertingen-Geislingen University. After the orientation week they sign their final Learning Agreement which will then become binding. The International Office will register exchange students for their exams which are included in their final Learning Agreement Intercultural Seminar During the orientation week exchange students are requested to take part in the Intercultural Seminar which is offered for them and their buddies. It is designed to further the students sensitivity towards intercultural differences and understanding. It will also help to get into contact with NGU students easily Information and Help Students receive information on - Health insurance which is obligatory for all students at German universities - Studies and courses at NGU - The use of NGU s computer network and libraries - The use of trains and buses within the VVS Stuttgart Area transportation network - The German language courses Students receive help with - Taking up health insurance (if they cannot use the health insurance of their home country) - Renting a bike Next to all these formalities there is also some distraction on offer Welcome Party organised by the International Office, usually on the first day of the orientation week An excursion to interesting places somewhere in the south of Germany Guided tour of Nuertingen Black Hole Party organised for all first semester students by NGU students 9
6. Integration Project: Nt-Great Nt-Great is an integration project for foreign students and it consists of several project parts, which are all open to foreign students at NGU. For example: - Social Sciences and Voluntary Work - School Program - Host-Family Program - Tandem Program - Theme Night Program (Country Presentations) - Internship Program The aim of each project is to establish contacts between people from Nuertingen and international students and have them experience German culture and society. 6.1 Nt-Great: Social Sciences and Voluntary Work This program combines a lecture in social sciences (academic part) with voluntary work in town (practical part). For this course, students receive 8 ECTS credits. The lecture deals with subjects within social sciences such as: - Intercultural issues, critical incidents - Fair trade, corporate social responsibility - Introduction to sociology and sociological concepts - Social change, global inequality Students have to do 40 hours of voluntary work in Nuertingen, e.g. at - Charitable or cultural institutions - The fair-trade shop etc. 6.2 Nt-Great: School Program International students have the chance to visit a school in Nuertingen and experience a German school lesson. They actively participate in class and get in touch with teachers and children or teenagers at school. The students join subjects such as foreign languages (e.g. a student from Australia visits an English lesson as a native speaker), history, geography, ethics, etc. This way, the students experience an important part of society and learn more about the German system of education. Likewise, teachers and high-school-students benefit from the international guests and experience an authentic intercultural dialogue. 6.3 Nt-Great: Host-Family Program International students can get a host-family in Nuertingen in order to meet local people and make international friendships. The families and the students meet in their free time students do not live with the families. They go on excursions together, visit cultural events or simply meet at home and talk. This way, they learn a lot more about German society than if they just socialise with other foreign students at the university. 10
The families help international students to integrate and feel welcome in their new environment. Likewise, the families enjoy international contacts and are able to learn more about a foreign culture. 6.4 Nt-Great: Tandem Program Students who are interested in learning German (or another language) can pair up with a German citizen to practice their foreign language skills. Apart from improving their language skills, this program fosters intercultural friendships between people of different nationalities and helps the foreign students to interact with local people. 6.5 Nt-Great: Theme Night Program (Country Presentations) International students have the chance to present their country at an international theme night. Presentations, information, quiz, music, costumes, dancing and traditional food are typical elements of such theme nights. This program enables Germans to learn more about other people and countries. At the same time, it gives international students the chance to tell Germans something about their culture. The country presentations are open to the public and want to encourage an intercultural dialogue in Nuertingen. 6.6 Nt-Great: Internships Nuertingen-Geislingen University has good contacts to many near-by companies and other employers. We can help students find an internship place which usually runs between 3 and 6 months. It will give the students the opportunity of gaining valuable working experience in Germany s export-oriented manufacturing or service industry and improving their German language proficiency. 7 Excursions There will be various excursions offered within the framework of the course Germany in the Heart of Europe, e.g. to - the Lake of Constance - Augsburg and the concentration camp in Dachau - Hohenneuffen Castle ruins There are also excursions organised by the International Office, e.g. to - the medieval Christmas Market in Esslingen in the winter semester - the university town of Tuebingen - including a punt tour on the Neckar river in summer semester 11
