3 NATIONAL REPORT TO THE HYDROGRAPHIC COMMITTEE ON ANTARCTICA (HCA) PREPARED BY THE CHILEAN NAVY HYDROGRAPHIC AND OCEANOGRAPHIC SERVICE Executive summary 1.- Hydrographic Office / Service: - Servicio Hidrográfico y Oceanográfico de la Armada de Chile (SHOA) Chilean Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service Surveys: - During the Antartic Cruise summer SHOA carried out hydrographic surveys activities in the following areas: ESTRECHO NELSON CHILEAN CHART 14220

4 - All of the surveys were carried out using single beam technology (Knudsen 320 MP and Elac 4300 echo sounder) - The tender vessel was the Chilean Icebreaker Oscar Viel Toro 3. - New charts & updates: - INT charts: INT 9123 CALETAS EN BAHÍA FILDES (SHOA 14211)

7 - ENCs During 2007 SHOA is preparing the ENC version for INT 9123; INT 9124 and SHOA Charts New publications & updates: Permanent update of the Sailing Directions for the Antartic Territory. Derrotero Antártico, Vol. VI. For the year 2007 and according the new Antarctic Charts Published by SHOA, the following pages were updated: - INT Charts 9123 and 9124, pages 9 to NATIONAL Chart 14330, pages 45 to MSI Chile has an infrastructure in accordance with the assigned area of responsibility IMO NAVAREA XV. This area considers the Antarctic sector of the Chilean responsibility. Transmissions are made through Safety NET INMARSAT C, according a pre-established schedule. Additionally, the Servicio Meteorológico de la Armada (Meteorological Service of the Navy) broadcasts through Safety Net INMARSAT the navigational warnings about ice edges and plotting of drifting icebergs S-55 The latest update for the S-55 Tables was sent by directly to the IHB in August Capacity Building Each year the Chilean Navy offers a Course on Antartic Navigation. This course is attended by national and foreign navigators. The main objective is to enlarge the antarctic kwonledge in topics ralated navigation, charting, meteorology, protection of the marine environment, pollution control, etc. The Hydrography Class A Course, carried out by the SHOA Training Center considers in its last semester a module of Antartic Information. In this module students meet the hydro-cartographic and oceanographic updated information related Antartica.

8 8. - Oceanographic activities - Tide measurement in Caleta Ardley and Caleta Armonía - Mareograph (tide gauge) maintenance in Rada Covadonga - CTD measurement in: Caletas: Marian, Armonia and Potter Bahías: Edgell and Collins Estrecho Nelson Involved charts: INT 9123; INT 9124; INT 9155; INT 9102 and National Chart Other activities Through National Decree 361 presented on November the 6 TH 2006, The National Committee for Antarctic Geographic Toponomy was created. This committee was created to advice to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in topics related to the Antarctic Toponomy. Also it is responsible for coordinating all of the National Entities which have relationship with geographical names of the Antarctic features. The Director of the Chilean Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service was named the Chairman of the Committee and the General Secretary is the Director of the National Antarctic Institute.
