1 Ticket Information Ticket Validity Period Tickets purchased for a trip of up to 100 operating kilometers are valid only on the date of purchase. Tickets purchased for a trip of 101 kilometers or more are valid for the periods shown below. Quick formula for determining the validity period A km 200 km+1 day=validity period (If there are any figures below the decimal point, round up to a whole number.) The validity period for round-trip tickets is twice that for one-way tickets. If a ticket s validity period is exceeded while the passenger is on board the train, travel may proceed to the final station on the ticket as long as the passenger does not make any stopovers en route. Stopovers Making a stopover means going out through a ticket gate of a station en route within the ticketed travel area. Stopovers are not permitted with the below kinds of ticket. 2 Adult and Child Adult and Child are defined as follows: Adult Child Infant Baby 12 years or older (12-year-olds who are still elementary school students are considered children) From 6 to 11 years old (inclusive) (6-year-olds who have not yet entered elementary school are considered infant) From 1 to 5 years old (inclusive) Under 1 year old Child Fares and Fees Basic fare tickets, limited express tickets, and reserved seat tickets for a Child are half the Adult fare. Fare amounts less than 5 yen are rounded down. Child Green car ticket and sleeper car ticket fares are the same as the Adult fares. One Adult and one Child passenger together or two Child passengers together may use one sleeper berth. Infant and Baby Fares and Fees Infant and Baby passengers can generally travel without charge, but they need a Child ticket in the following cases: 1. When more than two Infant passengers accompany one Adult or one Child passenger. (A Child ticket is required for the third and any further Infant passengers.) 2. When one Infant or Baby occupies a reserved seat, green car seat, or sleeper berth alone. 3. When an Infant travels alone. Discount Tickets <Round-Trip Discount Tickets> When the one-way distance on round-trip tickets is 601 operating kilometers or more, the outbound and return fares are each discounted 10%. <Student Discount Tickets> Passengers who are students at lower and higher secondary schools, universities, vocational schools, and other types of school designated by JR and whose tickets are for one-way distances of 101 operating kilometers or more will receive a 20% fare discount. This student discount is also applicable to round-trip discount tickets. When purchasing tickets, students should present a Student Travel Fare Discount Certificate issued by their school. 3 <Group Discount Tickets> Types of Group When eight or more passengers travel by the same route together, they may receive discounts as follows: 1. Regular group: Ordinary customers 2. Student group: When eight or more students, schoolchildren, or kindergarten children from a designated school travel under the charge of a member of the school staff * This requires a group travel application certified by the head of the school. Calculation of Group Fares The cost is calculated by multiplying the discount fare for a single passenger (amounts less than 10 yen are rounded down) by the number of passengers. 1. Special Exceptions to Fare Calculation <Special Exception in Case of Passenger on Train that Passes Through Junction Station Without Stopping> This applies to travel on line sections that diverge at one of the stations on the left-hand side of the pairs of stations shown below. In the case of a passenger who is traveling from one of those diverging line sections to the other diverging line section, when the train passes through the left-hand station without stopping, so that the passenger must proceed to the next stop and then double back over the same line section between the left-hand station and the right-hand station in order to get off the train at the left-hand station and change to the other diverging line, then the distance in kilometers doubled back over that same line section will not be counted in the fare. (Commuter passes are excluded.) However, stopovers are not permitted within that line section where the passenger doubles back. (Passengers who make a stopover on that doubled-back section are required to pay the fare for travel on that section.) 5 <Special Exception for Passage Outside Line Section of Specified Diverging Line Sections> In the case of travel over the following line sections, the distance in kilometers on the line section marked in bold, which is between the stations within square brackets ([ ]), will not be counted in the fare.
