Figures from UEFA EURO Programme overview During UEFA EURO 2012, more than 5,500 volunteers will assist UEFA s full-time staff in many areas of operation, half of them in Poland and the other half in Ukraine. Volunteers are a critical component for the success of UEFA EURO 2012 as they will most often be the first contact football supporters have with the tournament. It is UEFA s belief that volunteers not only support the successful implementation of operations but also lend their enthusiasm and a unique host country flavour, giving visitors and participants an unforgettable experience. UEFA EURO 2012 would simply be impossible to organise without the help and dedication of volunteers. Apart from having the chance to be part of this historical event, UEFA EURO 2012 volunteers enjoy a whole range of benefits, including professional training, insurance, a volunteer s certificate, meals and beverages while on duty, adidas uniforms, equipment and UEFA EURO 2012 souvenirs. They have access to free public transport from 1 May 2012 until the end of the tournament. Volunteers are also be able to enjoy an exclusive programme of social and integration events such as workshops, meeting famous sportsmen, and city games. 2. Selection process and criteria The recruitment process was open to everyone; however, successful candidates needed to fulfil some basic requirements, such as: be at least 18 years old (before or on 1 March 2012); be able to communicate fluently in English; be available for recruitment interviews and training; be able to commit to a reasonable number of days and shifts; possess relevant skills depending on the roles available. Applications and interviews Candidates filled in an online application form which was available on UEFA.com from 14 June until 16 October During this period, an impressive number of 23,965 applications were submitted by candidates from 142 different countries. This has set an alltime record for a UEFA European Football Championship. June / 6

2 43% of applicants were Polish, 40% Ukrainian, 2% Russian, 2% Italian, 1% German, 1% Spanish and 11% other nationalities. 57% were women compared with 43% men, and the average age of applicants was 23. The oldest candidate was 80 at the time of application, the youngest 17. Shortlisted candidates were invited to 30-minute interviews in one of the eight host cities on a weekend between September and November The best 5,500 were selected as volunteers at the end of a seven-month recruitment process during which 13,000 interviews were conducted and more than 7,000 hours spent on recruitment weekends in Poland and Ukraine, in all eight host cities. All applicants were notified about their application status by the end of December Training Selected volunteers received specific training from February to May The training programme included: general training on the tournament, host countries and host cities, participating national teams, and general volunteer skills. specific training for certain groups of volunteers on the operational areas and role-specific know-how. In some cases, this included venue familiarisation and customer service skills. Training documents were also made available online via a dedicated e-learning portal. 4. Volunteer areas of operation During the tournament, volunteers will be needed for various periods of time from 8 June to 1 July Some functions require volunteers to start before and/or after this period. Each role has a specific work schedule and volunteers service is organised in shifts of, on average, 7 8 hours per working day. 3 Access control management Access control management will guarantee that everyone holding a valid pass or ticket accesses the venue on a match day in an efficient and organised way. Access system volunteers will support stewards at the gates and will also support disabled fans from their arrival at the parking area to their seat inside the stadium, to ensure smooth access to the gates and the stands. Accreditation This department will plan and manage access to the eight stadiums and areas within them, as well as to the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), for all parties involved, such as referees, players, officials, media, volunteers, service providers, suppliers and partners. Volunteers will be on duty in the accreditation centres, where they will welcome visitors and provide them with a personalised identity card. Ceremonies/FANtertainment Ceremonies will be held before every match and various types of entertainment will be offered to visitors. Volunteers will actively support such activities. Event logistics The logistics department is responsible for the smooth operation of all transport, delivery, storage and distribution processes during UEFA EURO Tasks in this sector include the coordination and organisation of various setting-up and dismantling projects and the prompt delivery and distribution of goods. This sector will also provide clothing for all staff members. Volunteers will support all of these processes, coordinating and generally lending a hand where required. Event transport This department will help provide smooth, reliable transport services for the 16 participating teams, officials, referees, media representatives, UEFA guests and partners. Volunteers will operate as drivers, in the transport office or as coordinators at the airports, hotels and stadiums. June / 6

4 Hospitality Hospitality volunteers will support the hospitality team in the implementation of the various hospitality programmes (VIP, sponsor and corporate hospitality), as well as the catering (staff, volunteers, media, match officials, youth programmes) at venues. Broadcaster servicing Broadcast service volunteers will provide assistance and administrative support at the International Broadcasting Centre. They will help coordinate any interview requests or any other organisational matters at the IBC. Information and communication technologies (ICT) Volunteers will provide basic IT support to help UEFA/LOC teams in various locations. Tasks will include hardware and software installation and resolving issues to do with internet connectivity. Information management Volunteers will assist the information management team on site in coordinating behind-thescene photos, the observers programme and knowledge transfer. Match organisation and UEFA anti-doping The match organisation sector is responsible for all activities directly linked to the matches themselves. This includes, for example, the proper organisation of the matches, the preparation of pitches at the stadiums and anti-doping controls. Volunteers will assist the venue team with match preparations, prepare meetings and take minutes. Media services and operations Some 2,700 international journalists and photographers will be reporting on UEFA EURO 2012, and approximately 1 billion viewers in more than 170 countries will follow the tournament on television. Each of the eight stadiums will have its own media centre, providing media representatives with ideal working conditions. Volunteers will be the first points of contact; they will distribute the latest information and help with the organisation and coordination of the press conference rooms, TV studios, photographers' rooms and press boxes. Marketing rights delivery Marketing volunteers will assist the marketing venue managers to deliver the sponsor rights on-site and also to assist them with the player escort programme, national team flag carrier programme, match ball carrier and ball boy/girl programmes. One of the volunteers will also take care of the official mascots and act as their guide. Legal UEFA EURO 2012 is supported by a variety of sponsors, and to ensure their advertising rights are implemented and protected, UEFA sets up an advertising-free zone around the June / 6

5 stadiums, in which only these sponsors may be represented. The volunteers will support the marketing sector in the office, on stadium tours and in monitoring advertising-free zones. Safety and security Volunteers will assist stewards in ticket control implementation at the stadiums on match days. The volunteers will also assist organisers team on-site, if needed, by helping with translations, information services and ensuring that everything runs smoothly at the venue. Ticketing Ticketing volunteers will be the first points of contact for ticket-holders in all eight host cities. They will deal with any queries and provide customer service. Technical services Technical service volunteers will assist during the preparation and set-up phase. During the tournament, they will monitor the technical services delivered to specific areas. VIP services VIP services will look after the VIP guests of UEFA EURO Volunteers will provide guidance, information and customer services, including collecting VIP guests from cars and accompanying them to the VIP entrance, organising the VIP cloakroom, controlling access to the VIP area, as well as assisting the VIP service team with the seating plan. Volunteer management All volunteer activities will be planned and implemented by the volunteer management department. Volunteer management volunteers will look after other volunteers and ensure that their work in all operational areas runs smoothly. Volunteers will be based at the stadiums, in the volunteer centres which will serve as a point of contact, training area and relaxation zone. Within the volunteer team there will be various functions to perform, e.g. helping to organise social activities for volunteers, providing the volunteer team with photo and video coverage of volunteer performance, providing customer service to volunteers, and helping with issues related to organisational matters within the volunteer centre. Welcome and information services Welcome and information service volunteers will provide information to spectators and deal with their queries and requests. This department will also look after UEFA guests at the airports and hotels. Volunteers will welcome these groups, provide them with information and handle their questions and requests. June / 6

Key project figures Poland Almost 90% of the 2,800 volunteers who will assist UEFA EURO 2012 in Polish host cities come from Poland, while over 63 nations are represented in all, with many from Germany, some from Spain and Italy, and a few from as far away as Venezuela, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. 52.2% of EURO 2012 volunteers are women, and the average age is The distribution by gender in the four host cities is: Gdansk (53% female, 47% male), Poznan (51% female, 49% male), Warsaw (52% female, 48% male), Wroclaw (53% female, 47% male). Ukraine Almost 90% of the 2,800 volunteers who will assist UEFA EURO 2012 come from Ukraine, while over 120 nations are represented in all, with many from Russia, some from Belarus and the USA, and a few from as far away as China, India, Angola and Nigeria. 64.5% of EURO volunteers are women, and the average age is The distribution by gender in the four host cities is: Donetsk (69% female, 31% male), Kharkiv (64% female, 36% male), Kyiv (62% female, 38% male), Lviv (63% female, 37% male). In Kharkiv the majority of volunteers (65%) are students, representing around 46 universities. Almost 18,000 people applied to be volunteers. The oldest volunteer was 79 and the youngest 19. Some 38% of the volunteers were women.
