Petrel TIPS&TRICKS from SCM Knowledge Worth Sharing Well Sections in Petrel 2011 Significant changes were made in Petrel regarding how to build Well Sections between Releases 2009 and More changes have been made in this area in Petrel Most of the new changes were to enhance the use of the template. This TIPS&TRICKS shows: 1) how to create basic (and not so basic) Well Sections in Petrel 2011, 2) where the elements are now located, and 3) the use of templates in the new version. One of the biggest changes in Petrel 2011 is the enhanced use of templates. In order to show these changes, we will build multiple Well Sections and add items to them by: Adding wells Changing the order of the wells Adding logs Changing the order of the logs and tracks in the section Color filling between the log and a track boundary Placing multiple logs in one track Color filling between the logs in the track Adding Well Tops Color filling between the tops in between the wells Adding seismic, 3D model horizons and properties in between the wells Use of Templates (both Petrel supplied and User defined) Creating a Well Section 1. To create a well section, click on Window New well section window 1

2. You will then see a panel to Select new well section template. You can create a new template or use a previously existing template. If you have created one or more templates before, they are available to choose again or Petrel provides some predefined default templates. Templates used in Petrel 2009 are converted and saved, adopting the name of the well section, then sequencing 1, 2, 3, etc. 3. The templates may also be found near the bottom of the Templates tab in the folder Well section templates. For now, let s choose to create a new template and use the default name (in this case; Well section template 2). 4. Click OK and the new empty Well Section appears in the graphics area and also at the bottom of the Windows tab. It is now time to add wells to the section. 2

Add wells to a Well Section There are three methods for adding wells to a Well Section: Clicking on the wells in the Wells folder. Clicking on the wells in a 3D window. Adding wells in the Well Section Settings Definition dialog using the horizontal blue arrow. Highlight one or more wells, click the horizontal blue arrow, and they are added to the bottom of the well list for the section. For now, let s click on the wells in the Wells folder. We will look at another method later. 1. Expand the Wells folder (Input pane) until you can see the wells 2. In this example, I clicked on the wells C1, C2, C3 and C7 in that order. The wells appear in that order in the Well section. Also, the wells appear in the Settings dialog for the Well section under the Windows pane. Bring up the Settings and go to the Definition tab and you will see the wells. (Petrel 2009 and previous versions had the wells listed under the Well Section picture in the Windows tab.) 3

3. To be better able to see where the wells lie relative to each other, open a 3D window and display the Wells along with the Well section fence from the Well section in the Windows tab. In a change from Petrel 2010, the Well section fence is stored in the Input pane under a folder named Cross sections. If this folder didn t already exist, it is created and placed at the bottom of the Input pane. Expand this folder and place a checkmark in the box in front of the fence. 4. I can see from the Well section fence that a better order for the wells would be C7 C1 C2 C3. To change the order, return to the Well Section Settings Definition tab, and highlight the C7 well. Use the Up arrow on the left to move it to the top of the list. 5. After hitting Apply or OK, the fence now looks more like I want it to look. 4

and the section now appears with the chosen wells and the depth tracks. Note that the depth tracks are in SSTVD, start at different depths and have different scales. These can also be changed in the Well Section window s Settings Definition tab. 6. Click on the Set absolute scale button and change the scale to a constant value (like 2200). 7. Next, change the Well position synchronization to Flatten on depth and pick 2000 SSTVD. 8. Click OK. Sometimes, to see the flattening, you must try to scroll one well and the others will click into place. The section now looks like: 5

6

Add logs to a Well Section 1. Adding logs to a well section is a simple procedure. Simply expand the Wells Global well logs folder and click in front of a log to add. Let s add the Gamma, Porosity and NetNonnet logs. One well in the section: We have now added to the template also. There are multiple ways to open the template Settings: Click on the Open selected template settings page icon 7

Under the Well Section Settings Definition tab, click on the Show well section template settings button Under the Templates pane, double click on the template name or right click and choose Settings Bring up the template using one of the above methods (there might also be others). If Petrel asks you to Update the current template, click OK. Under the Well section template settings tab, you can now see the log templates. These show the tracks in the well section in order. The Index track is the depth track. The Lithologies track is the NetNonnet track. 8

2. Change the track order to have the depth track between the Porosity and NetNonnet tracks. Do this by clicking on Index track (This shows the depth style (SSTVD, TVD, TVT, etc.) depending on what the section is in) and using the down arrow to the left to place it in the correct position. 3. Clicking Apply or OK changes the well section. 9

Color fill the logs Now, let s color fill between the logs and the track edge. 1. Click on the Create/edit curve fill icon on the Function bar 2. Click in a log track on the side of the log curve you want filled with color. And the track is filled with color. The color comes from the template settings for that type of log. 3. Also, fill the other log. Note that all the wells in the section have their logs filled. 4. If you don t want the color to go to the edge of the track, put the cursor at the point in the color fill where you want the color to stop and click again. 10

All of this information about log color is stored in the template. 11

Creating another Well Section Now, we will create a second Well section 1. Create another well section by clicking on Window New well section window 2. Again, you will see a panel to Select new well section template. Once more, let s create a new template called in this case: Well section template 3. If you check Show settings, the template s Settings dialog opens when you click OK. 3. Click OK and the new empty Well Section appears in the graphics area and also at the bottom of the Windows tab. A new Well Section fence appears under the Cross sections folder in the Input pane. 12

We will add wells to this section graphically. 4. Create a new 3D window or clear all visualizations out of an existing 3D window. 5. Display the Wells in the 3D window 6. Use Tile Horizontal to be able to see both the 3D window and the Well Section at the same time. (If other windows are also active, de activate them so only the 3D window and the Well Section are active. Then press Tile Horizontal again). 7. Activate the process Stratigraphy Well correlation. This adds an icon to the Function bar. Press the Add well to well section icon 13

8. With the 3D window active, click on the wells in the order you want them added to the section. (You must click on the well path of the object. Selection can be difficult if the well paths are very thin or there are many wells. You might have to make the Pipe width larger under Wells Settings Style Path in order to be able to accurately pick the wells). As you pick the wells, you should see them appear in the Well section and also have the Well section fence appear in the 3D window. (Once again, if the wells are in the wrong order on the section, go to the Well Section Settings Definition tab and change the order. If you click on a well you don t really want in the section, delete it from the section in the same place.) 9. Make the Well section cover the entire graphics area (in other words, get rid of the 3D window; we are finished with it). 14

Add logs to the new Well Section 1. Expand the Wells Global well logs folder and click in front of a log to add. Again, let s add the Gamma and Porosity logs. One well in the section: We want to put the logs in the same track in this section. 2. Open the template using one of the methods described earlier and update the current template. 3. Highlight the name of the Porosity log (not the Porosity track). Use the Up Arrow icon to move the log into the Gamma track. 15

4. Click Apply or OK to change the Well Section. You might want to delete the empty track (the old Porosity track). 16

Color Fill Between the Logs 1. Highlight the combined Gamma/Porosity track in the template Well section template 3 and go to the Curve filling tab on the right side of the template. 2. Click on the Add new curve filling icon to add an object. 3. Make the Fill edge from Curve to Curve. Make the top curve Gamma and the bottom curve Porosity. 4. Choose a Fill style (positive) Pattern and Fill style (positive) Fill color that you want for the type of data 5. Be sure the Box in front of Color fill is checked in order to see what you have done 6. Repeat choosing a pattern and color for Fill style (negative). Press OK 7. Close the template 17

Add Well Tops to the Section There are two methods for adding top picks to the section. Either 1. Put a checkmark in the box in front of the Well Tops file (like in previous versions), or 2. Bring up the template using any of the methods, right click on Borehole markers and choose Well Tops. 18

Insert the Marker collection and click Apply or OK. Turn on and off in the Stratigraphy folder any you do not want on the section or any you want on the section that are not displayed as you like. 19

Add Graphics between the Wells We may also add graphics between the wells. In Petrel 2010, you could only color fill the zones between wells. In Petrel 2011, other options have been added. 1. Bring up the template on the 2nd well section (the one with color fill between wells). 2. Highlight the Well tops (not the Borehole markers folder) and go to the Symbols and labels tab on the right side. 3. Put a check in the box for Show color fill at zone level and click Apply or OK. If the level is set to (max), the highest level zone will be filled. If it is set to 1, only level 1 zones will be filled, etc. Below is a picture with the level set to (max). 20

4. For other backgrounds, right click on the Background track: a. Choosing Seismic lets you choose a seismic cube and, using the blue arrow, enter it into the Definition sub tab for the Background: This gives you a seismic background when you click Apply or OK 21

b. Choosing Property allows you to display a property. Before choosing the property, you must choose the Template and 3D grid to use. Use the Up and Down blue arrows to position the properties to your liking: 22

Clicking Apply or OK displays the property. c. You may add 3d grid geometry by choosing that option. 23

Under the Definition tab on the right side, choose the 3D grid to get the geometry from and under the Style tab, make it look as you wish: Clicking Apply or OK displays the structure: d. You may also display a simulation property using similar methods. 24

Experiment with Templates We have now made two Well sections using different templates. Now, we will see what can be done with the templates. 1. Make sure the second Well section is active (the one with the two logs in the same track). 2. On the Tool bar at the top of the section, click on the black triangle to the right of the template name. You will see all available templates. 3. Choose Well section template 2. The Well Section changes to the other template, but using the wells from this section. 25

4. Change to the Petrel supplied Signatures template 5. Return to the template we built: Well section template Now, make the first Well section we built active. This uses Well section template Pick a new template, the Petrel supplied Core template. 26

8. Check out other Petrel supplied templates also. The complete list of templates can be found in Templates Well section templates. In the sample project, this list now looks like: Conclusion We have generated two sections with templates and experimented with Petrel supplied templates. This is just a sample of what can be done in Well Sections in Petrel The goal here was to show some of the new things that can be done with templates. These changes make templates a powerful tool that is easy to use (once you have learned how). They are saved to the Petrel project just like all other data is saved. Templates can be moved from one project to another using File Reference project tool which makes them easy to transfer from one team member to another or from a finished project to a new one. 27
