Petrel TIPS&TRICKS from SCM Knowledge Worth Sharing Building Montages in Petrel Most Petrel projects require display maps to be made for presentations; either for partners or peers. This TIPS&TRICKS provides a guide showing how montages may be made for generating plots for these presentations. A montage is a single map containing any number of individual maps or graphic images. All Petrel window types may be included in a montage. Some may be put in as maps or viewports while others must be captured as a graphic image before being placed in the montage. Each montage has some unique characteristics: You may add as many viewports to a montage as you wish It is virtual (not a graphic file) until it is sent to a printer or plotter Most images are dynamic (if the data in a viewport is changed; the picture in the montage changes) Images can be linked together (if linked, changing the scale or mapping area in one viewport changes the others also) Text and lines may be added to the montage. Creating a Plot Window: Montages are made in a Petrel Plot window. To create a Plot window, click on Window in the Menu Bar and choose New plot window A new empty plot window will appear in the visualization area of Petrel. Also, the plot window (in this example, Plot window 1), will appear in the Windows tab of the lower Petrel explorer. 1
Paper Size: The first thing to do is set up the size you want the final montage to be. If you don t set up the paper size first, Petrel will set up a paper that is the default print size of your Petrel session. If you wish to change the size later, Petrel will either shrink or enlarge the entire plot to the new paper size. To set the paper size; with the plot window active, click on File in the Menu Bar and choose Page setup. Choose one of the standard print sizes, or set up a custom size. Also choose Portrait or Landscape. After the size has been specified, if you like, change the name of the window to something meaningful. To do this (as with all Petrel objects); bring up the Settings of the plot window and type in the new name under the Info tab. 2
Creating Viewports: Viewports may be either created individually or automatically using the New object in window icon. Clicking on that icon allows you to pick the type of viewport you require from the following menu. If you choose to place the viewports individually by picking one of the viewport types, use the left mouse button to place the viewport by clicking on one corner location and dragging to the opposite corner. 3
You may place as many viewports (of one or multiple types) as you wish on the plot. Another way to create viewports is to let Petrel generate a group of them. Click on the New object in window icon and choose Create/align multiple viewports. When that option is chosen, the following menu appears: Pick the type of viewports to create, the number and layout and then press Setup viewports to add the viewports to the Map Window. Checking Link viewports means that all viewports have the same Scale and Minimum/Maximum X and Y Coordinates. If you change the scale or coordinates of one viewport; they all change. You may create a group of viewports automatically and then create others individually. Whichever method (or methods) is used; the viewports appear under the Plot Window name Viewport names may be changed using their individual Settings menus to reflect what is or is going to be in each viewport. 4
Putting data into viewports: To put data into a viewport, the viewport must be active. The active viewport will have a red border; the others will have black borders. To make a viewport active, simply click in that viewport. Putting data into the active viewport is the same as putting data into a 2D, 3D, Map or any other type of window; you click in the black box in front of the data in either the Input or Models tab. That data will appear in the viewport. A Map Viewport has the same rules for data as a Map Window as far as type of data that can be put into the viewport along with supporting features such as auto legends, axes, info boxes, etc. This is true for all types of viewports except intersection and well section. Methods for placing data into those types of viewports will be explained later in this document. When you are finished with one viewport, simply click inside another viewport and that one will become active. 5
The plot window below has been set up with different viewports: A Map viewport in the upper left 4 Histogram viewports in the upper right An Intersection viewport in the lower left A Well Section viewport in the lower right The Plot Window (under the Windows tab) shows the different types 6
Map and Histogram Viewports Fill in the Map and Histogram viewports by making the viewport active and clicking in the box in front of the desired data in the Input or Models tab. Note that multiple surfaces or horizons may go in each histogram viewport. Change each viewport s settings (using the Show viewport settings icon) as desired while each viewport is active. These viewports are dynamic; if you change the object displayed in the viewport, the picture also changes. You will probably have to expand the viewport in the Windows tab to turn on the Header (to add the title) and Symbol legend (to differentiate between different colored histograms) so they will be shown. Intersection Viewport For an Intersection viewport, you must have already set up a general or I or J intersection in either the Input or Models tab. The intersection viewport uses this previously existing intersection to get the limits for the viewport. Highlight the Intersection viewport: Put a Checkmark (click in the square box) in front of the intersection to use (this sets the limits for the viewport) 7
Check each object you wish to put into the viewport. You will see the objects appear in the Intersection viewport (surfaces, horizons, faults, wells, edges, etc.): Change the viewport settings, if necessary. Also, turn on the Header if you want. Well Section Viewport Getting a Well Correlation Section into a viewport is the most complicated; but still fairly easy. Make the Well Section viewport active by clicking in the viewport. Right Click on the Well Section viewport name and bring up the Settings menu. Go to the Settings tab under the Settings menu Under the Windows tab of the Petrel explorer, highlight the name of the Well Section to place into the viewport: 8
Using the Blue Arrow on the Settings tab of the Settings window of the Well Section viewport, place the name of the Well Section in the menu: Click on Update and the well correlation section will appear in the Well Section viewport. The Well Section viewport is the only viewport type that is not dynamic. If you change the Well Correlation Section, the viewport in the Plot Window will not automatically change. Return to the above menu (the Settings for the Well Section viewport) and once again click on Update. The latest version of the Well Correlation Section will now appear in the viewport. The current Plot Window: 9
Bitmaps: Bitmaps may also be put on a Plot window. Create a bitmap by importing a picture or by copying and pasting a picture into Petrel from a Petrel window or from another program. (If you wish to put pictures from a 2D or 3D window onto a bitmap, this is the method to use). Create a Plot window and place a checkmark in the box in front of the bitmap or bitmaps in the Input tab. The bitmap or bitmaps appear in the upper left corner of the Plot window. 10
In the Select/Pick mode using the Pointer icon, a 4 pointed cursor will appear over the picture. Drag the picture where you want it to be on the Plot window. 11
Place the cursor over a corner of the bitmap and a two headed arrow will appear: Drag the borders and enlarge or reduce the bitmaps any size you wish (remember, they might become pixilated if made too large). Text, Lines and Boxes: Text (labels), lines (arrows) and boxes (rectangles) may also be placed on the window. To place text on the plot window, return to the New object in window icon and choose New label. 12
Use the cursor to choose a location on the map Under the Plot Window name on the Windows tab, find the new label (<Label 1>) and bring up it s Settings menu Type in whatever text you want to appear on the window along with the Font, etc. 13
Click on Apply or OK and your new text will appear In a similar manner, add arrows or boxes. Summary: These Petrel features make it simple to create quality maps for your presentations. Just remember the few simple procedures described above and you ll be ready to show work you ll be proud of. 14
