1 Brailey Hydrologic Consultants Anchorage, AK phone fax October 8, 2009 Anchorage Sand and Gravel Co., Inc O Malley Road Anchorage, Alaska Attn: Subject: Mr. Wes VanderMartin pond water sample results Dear Wes: To help determine whether AS&G should proceed with backfilling of the Lucy Street gravel pit, a pond water sample was collected on September 23, 2009 by David Brailey of Brailey Hydrologic Consultants. The water sample was collected and analyzed in accordance with AS&G s Monitoring Well Installation and Groundwater Monitoring Plan (Brailey 2009), except that two additional analyses were performed: coliform bacteria by Standard Method 9223B, and semivolatile organics by EPA Method Although rush turnaround was requested, duplicate samples were not analyzed, because it is not clear at this point whether the monitoring program will be implemented. If AS&G undertakes the project, then annual monitoring reports will be prepared summarizing field procedures, analytical data quality, surface and subsurface hydrology, and water quality results. Results of the September 23 pond sample will be included in the 2009 annual report, together with a complete evaluation of results. The current transmittal does not include a complete evaluation, but provides a comparison against standards specified in the Alaska Water Quality Criteria Manual for Toxics. In accordance with the Groundwater Monitoring Plan, the pond water sample was analyzed for major ions, metals, volatile organic compounds, semivolatile organic compounds, and coliform bacteria. Although dissolved metals concentrations were not requested, the laboratory provided both total and dissolved metals concentrations. Dissolved metals concentrations are useful for calculating major ion charge balances, but are not generally used for comparison against water quality criteria. Analytical results are provided in the attached laboratory report. No volatile or semivolatile organic compounds were detected, and major ion concentrations (including nitrate) are typical of uncontaminated surface water. Both coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli were detected, indicating contamination by fecal matter. Total aluminum concentrations exceed acute and chronic criteria for freshwater aquatic life, and manganese concentrations exceed

2 Mr. Wes VanderMartin October 8, 2009 Page 2 human health criteria for consumption of water and aquatic organisms. Aluminum and manganese do not have Alaska drinking water standards. Thank you for the opportunity to provide these services. Please call should you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, David E. The MS and/or MSD were above the acceptance limits. See Blank Spike (LCS). The MS and/or MSD were below the acceptance limits. See Blank Spike (LCS). Sample filtered in lab. The exceeded the acceptance limit. Due to the low levels of analyte in the sample, the duplicate calculation does not provide useful information. Laboratory Reporting Conventions: DET ND NR/NA dry wet MRL MDL* Dil Reporting Limits Analyte DETECTED at or above the Reporting Limit. Qualitative Analyses only. Analyte NOT DETECTED at or above the reporting limit (MDL or MRL, as appropriate). Not Reported / Not Available Sample results reported on a Dry Weight Basis. Results and Reporting Limits have been corrected for Percent Dry Weight. Sample results and reporting limits reported on a Wet Weight Basis (as received). Results with neither 'wet' nor 'dry' are reported on a Wet Weight Basis. RELATIVE PERCENT DIFFERENCE (s calculated using Results, not Percent Recoveries). METHOD REPORTING LIMIT. Reporting Level at, or above, the lowest level standard of the Calibration Table. METHOD DETECTION LIMIT. Reporting Level at, or above, the statistically derived limit based on 40CFR, Part 136, Appendix B. *MDLs are listed on the report only if the data has been evaluated below the MRL. Results between the MDL and MRL are reported as Estimated Results. Dilutions are calculated based on deviations from the standard dilution performed for an analysis, and may not represent the dilution found on the analytical raw data. Reporting limits (MDLs and MRLs) are adjusted based on variations in sample preparation amounts, analytical dilutions and percent solids, where applicable.
