Hazardous Waste Initial Training Brian Smith, Hazardous Waste Coordinator Environmental Health and Safety Michigan State University THE Absolute Three Things you need to stay out of trouble: Words Hazardous Waste Completed Waste Tag (No Abbreviations) Keep Container Closed (Except When Actively Adding) Training (Initial and Annual Refresher) Hazardous Waste Disposal Types of Waste Chemical Waste Radioactive Waste Biohazardous Waste/Medical Waste Pathological Waste Refer to the Waste Disposal Guide Hazardous Waste Containers Liquids EHS provides 5-gallon carboys that DOT-approved No lab glassware, beakers, flasks Small Containers (< 1 gallon) Make your own - Deface previous labeling EHS will bring packing material (boxes, absorbent) and package the wastes for transportation. Typical Wastes in Chemistry Examples of HW Containers Spent solvents Metal bearing aqueous materials Acidic materials Unused or expired chemicals Silica gels w/solvent contaminates Used oil vacuum pumps Sharps needles/syringes 1
Attach to container!! Fill out immed. Examples Of Fill out when added What Not To Do! Fill out when full/90 days Options for waste accumulation may include... 2
This is closed So What is Hazardous Chemical Waste? Liquid, Solid or Gas that is a: Listed Discarded Chemical Commercial Product (DCCP) Listed Hazardous Waste (spent a from process/source) Characteristic Hazardous Waste Not this Discarded Chemical Commercial Product (DCCP) 3
Characteristic Hazardous Waste - Corrosive (ph < 2 or ph > 12.5) - Acids/bases - Ignitable (Flash Point < 140 F) - Solvents, Flammable liquids - Reactive with air or water (sodium/potassium/lithium metal; organometal compounds), cyanide or sulfide bearing - Toxic (See Table) Process waste from specific source - Solvent rinses - Manufacturing / R & D processes Toxic -Heavy Metals (ppm or mg/kg) Arsenic 5.0 Mercury 0.2 Barium Silver 5.0 Cadmium 1.0 Selenium 1.0 Chromium 5.0 Lead 5.0 Listed Solvents The following substances used as a solvent/degreaser or mixtures or blends containing 10% of any of these before use: Acetone Benzene n-butanol Carbon Disulfide Carbon Tetrachloride Chlorinated fluorocarbons Chlorobenzene Cresols Cresylic acid Cyclohexanone 2-Ethoxyethanol Ethyl acetate Isobutanol Methylene chloride Methanol Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK) 2-Nitropropane Pyridine Tetrachloroethylene (perchlor) Toluene 1,1,1-Trichloroethane 1,1,2-Trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane 1,1,2-Trichloroethane Trichloroethylene (trichlor) Xylene Non-Metal Toxic Wastes: (See Waste Disposal Guide page 61) Benzene Carbon Tetrachloride Chloroform 1,2-Dichloroethane Methyl Ethyl Ketone Nitrobenzene Pyridine Tetrachloroethylene Trichloroethylene 6.0 ppm ppm 2.0 ppm 5.0 ppm 0.7 ppm 4
More Non-Metal Toxic Wastes: (See Waste Disposal Guide page 61) Chlordane Chlorobenzene Cresols 1,4-dichlorobenzene 2,4-dinitrotoluene Heptachlor Vinyl chloride 0.03 ppm ppm ppm 7.5 ppm 0.13 ppm ppm 0.20 ppm Metal Cans/Buckets DO NOT place in dumpster 1. Leave lid on when empty do not air dry! 2. Leave labeling as is 3. Place in hallway for pickup by EHS Non-Hazardous Waste... but still regulated... Unlisted, yet still contain toxic metals (thallium, osmium, nickel, vanadium beryllium, antimony, cobalt) Waste Oils Anything liquid being collected for disposal Fluorescent tubes Segregating Liquid Waste Flammables/Organic Liquids Corrosives (must be sub-segregated) Heavy metal solutions (EXCEPT Mercury) Mercury Containing Wastes 5
Used Oil These words must be on any container used to store waste oil. And there s one of these all ready for your oil at the loading dock!! Non-Sharps Biohazardous Waste Waste items generated through lab process that are contaminated with potentially infectious material, human or animal body fluids (other than urine or feces) or r-dna Storage: Biohazard bag in secondary container Lid required if possibility of liquid release Sharps include all: Needles Syringes w/o needles Scalpels Sharps Management Sharps also include any item that is sharp enough to puncture the skin and is contaminated with potentially infectious material. More on Solid, Non-Sharps Biohazardous Waste Do not commingle chemical with biological waste (i.e. phenol chloroform, ethidium bromide) Decontaminate in an autoclave approved by the EHS for that purpose following posted parameters. (Don t forget the black bag!) Sharps Containers Don t overfill the sharps container A sharps container must be permanently closed and disposed of through ORCBS when: It is ¾ full, or Within 90 days of first use Waste Minimization (required by EPA) Waste minimization can be achieved by: Substituting non-hazardous or less toxic material whenever possible. Purchasing only the amount of chemical that is needed. Don t forget the SHARPS label! 6
Final Comments The EHS Waste is here to help you with the proper disposal of waste. Issues arise when: Problems and waste are hidden from EHS (Unlike cheese & wine, chemicals do not get better with age) Please Remember Hazardous Waste Refresher Class On-line Every year Chemical contents are intentionally left off the waste tag 7
