5 Operational characteristics Swirl diffuser operational characteristics Although offered in various shapes and sizes, TROX Swirl diffusers all share a similar core design. A series of linear slots are aligned radially around the center of the diffuser face. These slots divide the supply air to the diffuser into a number of high velocity jets. This increase in supply jet surface area enables the diffuser to induce large quantities of room air. In most designs, the slots are subdivided along their length to further enhance the induction rate. The supply jets are also discharged in a cyclonic pattern, which forces the air jets to travel in a rotating manner around the diffuser center. During this travel, the jets induce additional room air and rapidly dissipate the velocity and temperature differentials between the jet and the ambient air, minimizing the distance at which high velocities and/or drafts exist. This high induction performance also enables them to perform equally well without an adjacent ceiling surface, making swirl diffusers an excellent choice for areas where exposed ductwork is employed. The unique discharge characteristics of swirl diffusers make them ideal for high air change applications involving air change rates up to forty (40) per hour. A section of this brochure is dedicated to such applications Swirl diffuser application guide APPLICATION FACILITY TYPE TDF TDV VDW RFD RFD-D FD VDL XARTO Offices, Schools, etc... 10 Selection Sizing with the help of this catalog This catalogue provides convenient quick sizing tables for ceiling diffusers. The tables give supply air volume flow rates for all nominal sizes. The maximum volume flow rates are for an open damper blade. A smaller opening of the damper blade results in higher sound power levels and a higher total differential pressure. The tables show values for damper blade positions 45 and 90. Sizing data for other volume flow rates and damper blade positions can be determined quickly and precisely using the Easy Product Finder design program. Sizing example Given data = 474 cfm Square ceiling diffuser, steel, with fixed air control blades Maximum NC 37 with damper blade position 0 Swirl diffuser for better air distribution Quick sizing Type TDF-SA Nominal sizes: 600 Selected: TDF-SA-Q-Z-H-M Easy Product Finder The Easy Product Finder allows you to size products using your project-specific data. You will find the Easy Product Finder on our website /2016 US
11 Selection Room Wizard in EPF It is possible to create an edification schedule and define all rooms in the Easy Product Finder (EPF). The algorithms developed by TROX allow the designer to obtain quick answers for the best diffuser selection to achieve the comfort levels required by the customer Room wizard Step 1 - Room Room wizard Step 2 - Air flow definition Step 3 - Arrangement of diffusers Room wizard Results Room Wizard results show list of swirl diffuser options available which meet the room requirements. Based on this selection, the ideal solution is the US-made VDW series swirl diffuser. 01/2016 US 11
12 Air distribution systems Air distribution systems Development goals for swirl diffusers Rapid reduction of temperature differences Rapid reduction of the airflow velocities Low sound power level Airflow velocity The recommended airflow velocity in the occupied zone 200 fpm (0.2 m/s) Simulation of air discharge Velocity A rapid reduction of airflow velocities requires as many individual jets as possible. These jets should be stable and have a highly inducing effect. Simulation of airflow through blade Optimum air distribution from numerous CFD simulations Prototype (rapid prototyping) confirms results Importance of geometry Geometry Three-dimensional blade contours Various entry flow and discharge angles Purpose To prevent eddies To prevent return flows To prevent rough flow behavior at the edges 12 01/2016 US
