Key prerequisites IBM Director Product number For details, refer to the Product number section in this announcement. Planned availability date December 14, 2007 AP distribution Country/Region Announced AP IOT ASEAN* India/South Asia** Australia People's Republic of China Hong Kong S.A.R of the PRC Macao S.A.R of the PRC Taiwan Korea New Zealand Japan IOT Japan * Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam **Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Afghanistan Description IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager V3.1, an extension of IBM Director , offers a solution that helps determine the proper power allocation for each server. It can assist a IBM Asia Pacific Announcement AG IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2
3 customer in determining how to reallocate power to additional servers without additional power and cooling equipment. IBM Active Energy Manager adds power draw up for each server or blade and tracks that usage over time. When power is constrained, IBM Active Energy Manager allows power to be allocated on a server-by-server basis. Care is taken that limiting power consumption does not affect performance. Sensors and alerts can warn the user if limiting power to this server could affect performance. The key advantage of Active Energy Manager V3.1 to a client is the ability to control energy consumption and improve energy efficiency, which can result in substantial savings and cost reductions. IBM Active Energy Manager enables clients to: Increase energy efficiency by controlling power use across the datacenter Negotiate the best utility rates based on accurate trend assessments Limit server power consumption by capping maximum power consumption (optional) This solution is valuable to users who want to optimize resource usage to measure, monitor, and control energy consumption to reduce IT costs and provide more efficient planning for their datacenter. By enabling you to meter power usage and trend data, IBM Active Energy Manager can help reduce energy costs in the datacenter. IBM Active Energy Manager also complements and integrates with higher-level management software such as Tivoli. Active Energy Manager interfaces with the IBM Tivoli Monitoring products. Active Energy Manager 3.1's open design and support for industry standards enable heterogeneous physical management with support for multiple platforms and operating systems, helping to protect your IT investment. IBM Active Energy Manager V3.1 enables systems platform management and monitoring across IBM systems and non-ibm systems. Active Energy Manager V3.1 enhancements The Active Energy Manager product has been enhanced with the following functions: Support for POWER6 servers The POWER6 blade servers have the capability of being monitored for power and temperature. Input power, output power, inlet temperature, exhaust temperature, and the effective CPU value can be viewed over time on a graph. Power control comes in the form of optional power capping and power savings. Optional power capping allows a user to be able to set the maximum number of watts that a server will consume. If the server approaches that cap, Active Energy Manager will throttle the CPU of the system in order to keep power usage below this threshold. The other power control is the ability to set a power savings mode. Through Active Energy Manager, a user can set this mode to save significantly on power consumption. Typically, a user would choose to do this in times of low utilization. This can also be automated, via use of the IBM Director scheduler, or by setting a policy that sets/resets the power saver mode when CPU utilizations reach a specific level. The power savings mode control is also available on System p 9117-MMA and System i 9406-MMA. Discovery and monitoring of intelligent PDUs PDUs (power distribution units) are available with a variety of IBM racks, including those that are available with System i, System p, System x, and some storage controllers. Servers and other equipment that exist in a rack get their power by plugging into these intelligent power strips. The IBM DPI C13+ and IBM DPI C19 PDU+ units contain a network connection so that power consumption can be monitored remotely. Active Energy Manager supports these units, and will show power trending data on a graph for any equipment that is plugged into the individual load groups. In addition, Active Energy Manager allows a user to associate any IBM Director-managed server with a PDU outlet, allowing the power consumption to be displayed for those servers. In cases where there are multiple power supplies for a server and each is plugged into a different PDU in the rack, Active Energy Manager will add these together to display a graph of total power being consumed by that server. Through this PDU support, Active Energy Manager can monitor power usage on older servers that do not have power metering built in. Additionally, Active Energy Manager monitors how many amps are being consumed by a PDU overall and how this compares to the maximum current that the PDU can support. Users will be alerted when a PDU approaches its capacity. Note: IBM DPI C13+ and IBM DPI C19 PDU+ PDUs have been previously available. Any existing PDUs in the field will need to be upgraded to the November 2007 version of the PDU IBM Asia Pacific Announcement AG IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3
4 firmware in order for Active Energy Manager to support them. Monitoring support for storage The DS3000, DS4000, DS6000, and N series storage controllers will ship with racks supported by the IBM DPI C13+ unit. Through the use of this PDU, Active Energy Manager will support power monitoring of these devices. Support for system x servers IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager V3.1 supports the following System x server models: Support for System x servers: x3550, x3650, x3655, x3755, x3850, x3950, and the new x3350, x3850 M2, and x3950 M2 Support for System x blade servers: HS , HS , LS , LS , LS , HS21 XM 7995, HC Support for BladeCenter chassis (BC): BC-H 8852, BC-E 8677, BC-T 8730/8720, BC-HT 8750/8740, and the new BC-S 8886 Other enhancements PowerExecutive required that all supported systems be polled at the same frequency (defaulted to once per minute). With Active Energy Manager V3.1, users can set a different polling rate for different systems. Systems that need to be monitored more closely can be polled frequently, whereas lower-priority systems can be polled less often. This targeted approach improves performance for the most important systems. With PowerExecutive, the manager server was supported on Windows and Linux on x86. New for Actve Energy Manager V3.1 is support to run on Linux on POWER systems. Installation Active Energy Manager for x86 V3.1 is available as a stand-alone version or as an extension to IBM Director The Active Energy Manager V3.1 extension has separate installers for Windows and Linux. InstallShield is used for Windows, and RPM is used for Linux. Windows installation is a traditional, dialog-based installation. Linux installation is a test-mode, unattended installation. The stand-alone version of Active Energy Manager V3.1 has separate installers for Windows and Linux. InstallShield 11 Premier Edition is used for Windows, and RPM is used for Linux. The stand-alone installer wrappers an installation of (or upgrade to) Embedded Director , followed by an installation of (or upgrade to) the AEM 3.1 extension. The SNMP, HMC, and BladeCenter management extensions are installed as part of the wrappered installation. The stand-alone version will be restricted from installing on System p or System z machines. IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager for x86, V3.1 (44W3911/44W3912/44W3913/44W3914) Product positioning: IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager, V3.1 is an extension to IBM Director It is an energy management solution building block that returns true control of energy costs to the client. Active Energy Manager is an industry leading cornerstone of the IBM energy management framework. In tandem with chip vendors Intel and AMD and consortiums like the Green Grid, Active Energy Manager advances the IBM initiative to deliver price performance per square foot. This offering enables monitoring and management of power usage across systems within the IT infrastructure, which enhances the cost of computing through improved power utilization and reduced labor cost. Called "Project Big Green," IBM's initiative targets corporate data centers where energy constraints and costs can limit their ability to grow. IBM plans to double computing capacity in its own datacenters and will use new technologies to avoid five billion kilowatt hours of new energy use. IBM is redirecting $1 billion per year across its businesses, mobilizing the company's resources to dramatically increase the level of energy efficiency in IT. The plan includes new products, such as Active Energy Manager, and services for IBM and its clients to sharply reduce datacenter energy consumption, transforming the world's business and public technology infrastructures into "green" datacenters. IBM is using its expertise and energy-smart technology innovations to outline a five-step approach for clients designed to dramatically improve energy efficiency for "Project Big Green." IBM's "green" solutions are formidable because of the strength of IBM's hardware, software, services, research, and financing teams. What "green" solutions can mean for clients: For the typical 25,000 square foot datacenter that spends $2.6 million in power annually, energy costs can potentially be cut in half. Based on the energy mix in the US, this savings is roughly equal to a reduction in carbon emissions of 7,439 tons per year, which is approximately equal to taking 1,300 automobiles off the road or reducing the amount of coal burned for energy generation by 3.5 million pounds. Active Energy Manager is one of the System Components in the IBM Cool Blue portfolio of products. Active Energy Manager V3.1 is focused on multi-system resource management of power across IBM servers and provides heterogeneous monitoring support which enables customers to manage actual power consumption.
