1 Software Announcement May 11, 2004 IBM LoadLeveler for Linux delivers job scheduling for IBM pseries and IBM xseries platforms running Linux Overview LoadLeveler for Linux is a versatile workload management system for serial and parallel batch jobs that is focused on ease of use, efficiency, reliability, and availability. With LoadLeveler, end users can view a cluster of systems as a single computational resource, dispatching jobs and balancing the workload across various systems in the network with optimum productivity. You can run more jobs in less time because LoadLeveler matches processing needs to available resources. An easy-to-use GUI builds, submits, and processes jobs, allowing end users and administrators to view the status of jobs and machines online. An API allows end users to plug in their own scheduler to enable an alternate scheduling algorithm, providing flexibility. LoadLeveler is better able to handle network and system outages without losing information thanks to a common daemon framework with multithreaded processes and object-oriented technologies that provides stability, reliability, and scalability. Authorized users can set the overall priority of jobs and how they are scheduled, control the jobs, and gather statistics on how jobs are run. LoadLeveler for Linux supports an interoperable environment with LoadLeveler for AIX. When the central manager runs on AIX, AIX and Linux nodes can be mixed within the same cluster. LoadLeveler can then dispatch jobs to run on both Linux and AIX servers. 2 Description A network job management and job scheduling system, LoadLeveler for Linux schedules and manages jobs submitted for processing on one or more servers under its control. This could be a cluster of Linux servers or a combination of Linux and AIX servers. LoadLeveler accepts jobs that users submit and reviews the job requirements. LoadLeveler then examines the servers under its control to determine which is best suited to run each job. The servers can be either general purpose servers or dedicated compute servers. LoadLeveler for Linux has three interfaces that enable end users to create and submit jobs and system administrators to configure the system and control running jobs: The LoadLeveler GUI provides access to basic job and administrative functions. The command line interface offers system access similar to the GUI. Experienced users and administrators may find the command line interface more efficient than the GUI for job and administrative functions. The API allows application programs written by customers to interact with the LoadLeveler environment. LoadLeveler monitors each job as it moves through the system using process control daemons. However, the administrator maintains ultimate control over all LoadLeveler jobs by defining job classes that control how and when LoadLeveler runs a job. The administrator can also control how jobs move through the system by specifying the type of scheduler LoadLeveler uses. LoadLeveler has several different scheduling options; each regulates job flow using specific algorithms that balance job priority with available machine resources. The central manager is the resource coordinator for the cluster. When running in a mixed cluster of Linux and AIX servers, an AIX server must be defined as the central manager. It manages submitted jobs to AIX and Linux servers as defined in the cluster. When LoadLeveler administrators are configuring clusters and when users are preparing to submit jobs, they need to be aware of the machine resources available in the cluster. These resources include the number of CPUs and the amount of memory available for each job. Because resource availability can vary over time, they can be defined as consumable resources in LoadLeveler. The use of consumable resources allow users to schedule jobs based on the availability of these specific resources. LoadLeveler for Linux supports parallel MPICH jobs and parallel MPICH-GM jobs using the Myrinet switch. Note: MPICH is a portable implementation of MPI, developed by Argonne National Laboratory. MPICH-GM is a port of MPICH on top of GM and is supported by Myricom. Product positioning LoadLeveler for Linux is an integral piece of the total system management solution. LoadLeveler provides an excellent framework for managing both serial and parallel batch workload in a single environment. Serial jobs are processed sequentially. Parallel jobs are supported using the message-passing interface provided with the Myrinet switch. With a simple modification of the user s job command files, LoadLeveler can schedule the parallel job to the appropriate servers. LoadLeveler for Linux is ideal for users who need to submit jobs whenever necessary and not according to any preset schedule. Tivoli Workload Scheduler is an IBM product for submitting jobs on a calendared schedule. Linux and AIX jobs can be submitted within the same LoadLeveler cluster.
