2 CNC High School Training Overview The CNC High School Boot Camp was developed based on the success of the adult CNC Boot Camps provided by Gateway Technical College and the Southeast Wisconsin Workforce Development Board. The CNC High School Boot Camp provides manufacturing and job success skills to high school students who have completed their junior year. These skills are necessary to obtain an entry-level CNC Operator position after graduation. All candidates returning the completed application materials will be invited for an interview. Due to a limited class size, it is possible not all students who apply will be selected to participate. Where: For Walworth County The classroom and hands-on training portion of the boot camp will take place at Gateway Technical College Elkhorn Campus 400 County Road H Elkhorn, WI When: Classes are divided into 3 segments. The first segment begins July 11, During this summer segment, class is scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 2:50pm for the first two weeks and from 8:30am to 12:50pm for the remaining weeks. The second segment begins when the Fall semester starts and will run in the afternoon. The third segment will begin with the Spring semester and will consist of an onsite work experience with a local employer. The Spring schedule will vary, depending on the employer s schedule and the student s remaining classes. Cost: Aside from a notebook and some supplies, there will be no cost to the student. 2 P A G E
3 CNC High School Boot Camp Checklist This is a list of items that must be turned in with the Boot Camp application. Certificate of Attendance Provided at Information Session Attended with parent/guardian Expectation Worksheet Completed at Information session Certificate of Company Tour Provided at the tour Attended with parent/guardian Letter of Recommendation from a teacher/guidance counselor Essay (200 words or less) that details why you wish to participate. Please, include post-secondary goals and colleges that you are considering (if any). Completed WorkKeys tests results. One result for each test: Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information. COMPLETE THE ENTIRE APPLICATION PACKET. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 4 CNC Training Program Application Process And Information Sheets Qualifications Minimum Qualifications. To be considered for the CNC training program applicants must, at a minimum, meet the following criteria: 1. Be a resident of Racine, Kenosha, or Walworth County, at least 17 years of age or a high school senior at the start of the 2016 school year. 2. Turn in completed application. Application Process Step 1 To be considered, the following must be included: 1) Completed Workforce Development Center Work Application 2) List of prior technical work experience, or grades of high school/college technical education coursework, and salary research 3) Essay that details why you wish to participate, including your post-secondary goals and colleges you are considering (if any) 4) Certificate from Classroom Expectations Session attended by applicant and parent/guardian 5) Certificate from Company Tour attended by applicant and parent/guardian 6) Workforce Development Center Expectations worksheet (will receive at information session) 7) Letter of Recommendation from a teacher/guidance counselor 8) Letter of consent to be released from High School for participation in CNC program 9) Release of Information Form 10) Verification statement of transportation to Gateway Technical College and employer work site and parental/guardian consent form 11) Completed WorkKeys tests results (Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information) Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Step 2 All completed applications will be reviewed. Step 3 Applicants will be invited to an interview to assess their interest and qualifications. Step 4 Selected participants will be offered an opportunity to participate in the program. Notification of Selection: All applicants will be notified. 4 P A G E
5 Resources for Completing Your Application Application: Application packets may be obtained from your High School Guidance Counselor or downloaded from the Walworth County Job Center website (walworthcountyjobcenter.com). Information Sessions: Information sessions provide students and parents an overview of what the CNC High School Boot Camp is like and how it is structured. It is mandatory to attend one of the information sessions below. It is mandatory to attend with a parent or guardian. A certificate will be given at the session which should be attached to your application when submitting it. You will also review an Expectations worksheet, which is required to be attached to the application. H Elkhorn, WI Choose one session from the dates below: 1. Thursday March 10 5:30pm 2. Thursday March 17 5:30pm 3. Tuesday March 22 5:30pm 4. Tuesday April 12 5:30pm Company Worksite Tour: Local employers will provide tours of their facilities and discuss the expectations they have of their CNC Operators. Attending a tour is required for the application process. A Certificate will be given at the tour which should be attached to your application. Sign up for your tour during one of the scheduled information sessions. 5 P A G E
6 KeyTrain and WorkKeys Assessment Academic assessment: You must complete KeyTrain and WorkKeys testing for the application. Most High School students will have completed the WorkKeys tests at their school during or prior to this application process. Contact your guidance counselor to find out when you will be testing or to obtain your test results. Should you need to complete WorkKeys for this application, follow the steps below: KeyTrain: 1. Register on the website. To do this click on the gold key in the orange login area in the site. You will be asked to answer a series of questions- answer all the questions to complete your registration. You will need a Social Security number to complete this survey. Computers are available at your local Job Center location, if you do not have a computer at home. a. If you have already registered on Job Center of Wisconsin, proceed to step Complete the pre-tests for WorkKeys on KeyTrain ( This is a website where you will pre-test in Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information. a. You can obtain your username and password from Workforce Development Center staff by calling a number below: Kenosha County: Racine County: or Walworth County: Assistance is available at your local Job Center. You can practice from any computer with internet connection. 3. Once you have reached the required levels in each of the three pre-test categories, call to schedule an appointment for the WorkKeys testing sessions: Kenosha County call Chris Isaacson at (262) Racine County call Todd Nienhaus at (262) Walworth County call Aubrey Hanna at (262) Take and pass all three WorkKeys tests. You will receive your National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) in the mail. a. To be eligible to participate in the CNC High School Boot Camp: Level 4, or higher, is required in Reading for Information and Applied Math Level 3, or higher, is required in Locating Information b. 11 Consent of Release from High School I provide consent for (student name) to be released from the school to partake in the CNC High School Boot Camp education and training program. The student is currently meeting academic standards and has earned sufficient credits for graduation for a student entering the final year of high school. Additionally, the student is in good standing behaviorally and does not have pending disciplinary actions. During the program, the student will be responsible for maintaining good academic and behavior standards at the school. The school understands that the student will be released, and the student is responsible for providing or arranging for transportation to the Gateway Technical College, 400 County Road H, Elkhorn WI Also, during the 2016 phase of the program, the student will report to an employer. 13 Cell Phone and Electronic Device Use in the CNC High School Boot Camp Cell phone and electronic device use is prohibited in all boot camp classes. Cell phones and electronic devices are a learning distraction and a safety issue, and will not be permitted. This includes texting and web browsing. Tools such as calculators will be provided in the classes that require them, so phone apps are unnecessary. No instructor or other student should ever see your cell phone in the classroom. Turn them off! Your instructor will share an emergency phone number with you. Your family can use it to contact you during class time, if there is an emergency that cannot wait until a break.
