1 Issued: 13 July 2010 Community Profile: Sure Start Children's Centre s Burnham-on-Sea This area profile pulls together a range of information about the Burnham-on-Sea area and the people who live there. no map available The area of Burnham-on-Sea, served by the Octopus Children s Centre, includes the wards of Berrow, Burnham North, Burnham South and Knoll. The population of 18,360 lives in area of 6,247 hectares resulting in a population density of 2.9 per hectare, twice the county average. There are 7,405 households, mostly in the town of Burnham-on-Sea itself. The area also incorporates the coastal strip containing Berrow and Brean, while the south-eastern corner has the M5 and A38 passing through it. Almost one in three people are of retirement age, in an area containing a large number of bungalows and caravan parks. There are few problems with serious crime, community cohesion or deprivation
2 People and Place Burnham-on-Sea has a slightly higher proportion of retired people with almost twice the proportion of women aged 85+ as the county average. 5 People and Place (continued) Burnham-on-Sea has a relatively high proportion of neighbourhood areas that are classified as either small business proprietors living in low density estates in smaller communities, financially secure and physically active older people, many retired to semi-rural locations or older couples, independent but on limited incomes, living in bungalows by the sea. It is also well represented by centres of small market towns and resorts containing many hostels and refuges, older people preferring to live in familiar surroundings in small market towns and owners of affordable terraces built to house 19th century heavy industrial workers. 10 Enjoying and Achieving With 7 in 10 children attaining at least 78 points at Foundation stage this is the highest of any of the Children s Centre areas, but GCSE and English & Maths at KS2 performance is more on a par with county and regional averages.
