1 MICROSOFT OFFICE BASICS INTRODUCTION The objective of the Microsoft Office Basics class is to provide an overview of the types of products and documents that can be created using the Microsoft Office suite of programs. The programs to be touched on today include: Word Excel PowerPoint Publisher All of these programs can be purchased individually or packaged with other programs in one of several editions of Office. In addition, they can be found on all the computers downstairs in our library. In keeping with our objective, we aren t going to go over how to use all four of the programs today. Rather, our goal is to show you what these Microsoft Office programs have to offer. After we finish, you will hopefully have a better idea of the functions and uses of Office and can sign up for the more in-depth classes offered through the library to learn the ins and outs of using each program. MICROSOFT WORD 2003 Microsoft Word is a word processing program, that is, a program used to create and print textual documents. Its function is similar to that of a typewriter; however, with a word processor, it s much easier to make changes and modify the document. Word is one of the more popular and widely used word processing programs and can often be found pre-loaded on new computer systems. Word can be used to create the following types of documents: Letters and Memos Papers and Reports Resumes Newsletters Flyers Calendars Business Cards Pamphlets and Brochures

Some of the more useful features and tools Word offers users include: Word Templates Spelling and Grammar Check Table Creation Formatting (Font, Paragraph, Bullets and Numbers, Borders and Shading, etc.) Inserting Pictures, Headers/Footers, and Other Items MICROSOFT EXCEL 2003 Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program, that is, a program that lets you lay out numerical data in rows and columns for comparative purposes. It can be an excellent resource for both personal and business use. Excel can be used to create the following types of documents: Budgets Invoices Payroll Sheets Fitness Charts Medication Logs Financial Calculators Financial Statements (Balance Sheets, Income Statements, etc.)

Some of the more useful features and tools Excel offers users include: Formula Creation Sorting and Filtering Formatting (Cells, Rows, Columns, etc.) Inserting Charts, Functions, Extra Rows and Columns, and Other Items MICROSOFT POWERPOINT 2003 Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation graphics program, that is, a program that allows you to incorporate multimedia features, such as video, audio, and graphics, into your electronic presentations. PowerPoint can be used to create and enhance presentations in the following types of environments: School/Classroom (Reports/Projects, Science Experiments, Lessons, Etc.) Office/Business (Training Presentations, Project Proposals, Etc.) Home (Trip Slideshow, Instructional Presentation, etc.)

Some of the more useful features and tools PowerPoint offers users include: Slide Sorter Slide Show Features Formatting (Font, Slide Design, Slide Layout, etc.) Inserting Pictures, Movies and Sounds, New Slides, and Other Items MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 2003 Microsoft Publisher is a publishing and marketing materials program. It allows you to design and print a massive selection of high quality publications; so much so, that Publisher has been called a print shop in a can. Publisher can be used to design and create the following types of documents: Brochures and Booklets Business Cards Calendars Signs and Posters Cards and Envelopes Newsletters Wedding Stationery Sets

Some of the more useful features and tools Publisher offers users include: Design Checker Graphics Manager Formatting (Font and Color Schemes, Publication Designs, etc.) Inserting Text Boxes, Design Gallery Objects, Hyperlinks, etc. USING TEMPLATES Not sure how to create what you want? Most Microsoft Office programs include templates that you can use. The formatting is done for you simply select a template and customize it to your liking. You can also visit the Microsoft website to download more free templates:
