He is a member of the CELS Research Group on Industrial Engineering, Logistics, and Service Management at the University of Bergamo, where he conducts research activities and industrial projects, mainly related to the optimization of supply chain and logistics processes. He leads, and participates in, industrial and research projects at both National and International level on logistics, supply chain management, and related topics. From 2001 to 2008, he received temporary research grants and teaching assignments from the Politecnico di Milano and the University of Bergamo, teaching and developing research activities in the industrial logistics and supply chain management area. Education: Ph.D.: he received his Ph.D. in Design and Management of Integrated Production and Logistics Systems from the University of Brescia in 2010, with a dissertation on inventory risk management under rationing policies from the supplier s perspective. Master degree: he graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 2001 (five-year program) in Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering, with a thesis on the comparison of parametric and neural network models applied to product cost estimation. MAIN RESEARCH STREAMS AND COMPETENCIES During the last decade, he has developed several research streams that today represent his multidisciplinary body of experience and knowledge. Current research streams - URBAN FREIGHT TRANSPORT AND DELIVERY: Urban population is steadily growing, bringing along a manifold increment of demand for goods and services, mainly concentrated in relatively limited or overly constrained urban areas. The research interest in this area is oriented towards the analysis and optimization of the logistics and transport activities performed by public and private actors in urban areas while considering the traffic environment, the traffic congestion and energy consumption within the framework of a market economy. This also encompasses the introduction or exploitation of new technologies related to logistics infrastructure and (big) data management. JUNE
2 - SERVICE ENGINEERING: Manufacturing companies are currently competing for the identification of innovative value propositions to position themselves in the market. This led to a shift from providing traditional transaction-based and product-centric offerings towards the provision of integrated solutions to their customers. In this context, Service Engineering represents the discipline concerned with the systematic development and design of service and productservices. The research interest and effort in this area are related to the definition of a methodology supporting companies in the engineering of a product-related service. In particular, the use of process simulation to test new services is the distinctive trait of this research area. - SERIOUS GAMING IN EDUCATION: there is a growing consent on the possibility of using games for communication, education and training purposes at very different levels, from scholars to professional. A serious game is a game with a primary purpose other than pure entertainment: it is rather meant to convey messages for training purposes, or to develop certain skills and behaviors transferable to the real world. In this area, the interest and research effort are devoted to the identification of the conditions under which a serious game is suitable for education and training, and to the design and development of serious games usable in the real life. Past research streams (partially active) - SUPPLY CHAIN RISK MANAGEMENT: The research effort in this area has been devoted to three specific sub-streams: o Supply risk: in this area, he is investigating the supply-side risk determinants, and the respective mitigating strategies. Particular emphasis is given to the modeling of relationships among decision factors, such as the use of buffer or the investment in suppliers. The focus is on providing a holistic perspective of the decision processes concerning supply risk management. o Delivery reliability risk: in this area, he is investigating the main delivery reliability issues originating from problems both in the production/distribution stage and in the planning process, leading to shortages and the impossibility of fulfilling customer demand. In particular, he is investigating the role of buffers and incentives in the management of delivery reliability. o Inventory risk and rationing: in this area, he has analyzed the risks related to inventory management, with a specific focus on the rationing problems, emerging when demand structurally exceeds available supplies. In particular, he has investigated the quantitative methods for stock rationing in vertically integrated supply chains. Further, in 2007, he was involved in the Supply Chain Council Technical Development Steering Committee working on integrating risk management in the Supply-Chain Operations Reference Model (SCOR). The results were published in the version 8.0 of the SCOR model. Further topics of interest in the supply chain risk management area are: holistic framework for supply chain risk analysis and management, adoption of quantitative and qualitative methods for supply chain risk management, collaborative supply chain risk management models. - PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT PARADIGMS IN ONE-OF-A-KIND ETO INDUSTRIES: within the SIGI-X project, funded by the Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico under the Industria 2015 Nuove Tecnologie per il Made in Italy framework, he is investigating new paradigms and related tools for the management of one-of-a-kind production systems in the engineering-to-order industries. This area is characterized by a lack of specific solutions and methods, tailored on the peculiar requirements of customers and suppliers. Therefore, in this area, he is working on the definition of a reference framework, providing guidelines for the implementation of processes and tools specifically aimed at managing the activities in this context. Further topics of interest in this area are: multi-project scheduling and planning, KPI for one-of-a-kind ETO companies. - PRODUCTION PLANNING AND DEMAND MANAGEMENT: he devoted research effort in investigating forecasting and production planning methods based on soft-computing techniques (Artificial Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, and Constraints Programming). He led a 1-year research JUNE
3 project on the demand planning issues and forecasting in automotive companies operating in the spare parts industries. The project was developed involving six companies operating in the sector. In this area, he also led four projects in an Italian automotive company producing braking systems adopting business process management methods for analyzing and reengineering demand forecasting and multi-site production planning processes. Further specific topics of interest were: collaborative demand planning, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR), Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP), analysis of production capacity for order date quotation, capacity allocation problems, scheduling with constraints satisfaction techniques. - PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF TRANSPORTATION SERVICE PROVIDERS: he investigated, in collaboration with four companies operating in different industries, the main performance dimensions evaluated during the selection phase of the service procurement process. He identified the main key performance indicators commonly adopted for the evaluation of operational performance. - SERVICE SUPPLY CHAIN (AFTER-SALES LOGISTICS): he participated in the Advanced logistic and organizational models for the integrated management of the after-sales service of durable goods (ASAP, as the acronym for After-sales advanced planning ) project, funded in 2002 by the Italian Ministry of Research (MIUR). Within this project, he focused on the logistic aspects of the after-sales service, analyzing the processes related to spare part requirements planning and to distribution network management. He also led the analysis of the data gathered from the field by an extensive survey on companies operating in the automotive, domestic appliances and consumer electronic sectors. The results of these analyses were published on four industrial reports. Further specific topics of interest were: item allocations in complex supply chain, spare parts management with sporadic demand. Industrial projects: He has developed and led projects in collaboration with companies in the automotive components, steel pipe manufacturing, pharmaceutical, building and construction, distribution and logistics, retailing, electronics industries. The focus of these projects has been on the improvement of the performance of the companies by analyzing and optimizing the internal logistics, production planning, demand management and distribution processes. Among the most relevant projects: - RISK ANALYSIS IN THE SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY: this project aimed at identifying suitable supply chain management decision models for the analysis and evaluation of the impacts of disruptions on the delivery to the customers. The achievement of the objective required the ex-ante identification of possible risks (through the analysis of the supply chain as-is processes), the orientation of supply chain management processes towards the prevention of the disruptions, and the definition of the requisites of a decision support system enabling what-if analysis. - FORECASTING AND MULTI-SITE PLANNING IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR: this project aimed at supporting a component making company in establishing an effective and efficient planning process for the aftermarket segment. The core of the project was composed of two main areas: forecasting (definition of an effective forecasting process, the involved roles, and the responsibility of each of them), and multi-site planning (coordination of several production plants in order to reduce logistics and transportation costs under production capability, capacity, and customer service constraints). - FORECASTING OF SLOW-MOVING COMPONENTS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR: this project aimed at supporting a component making company in establishing an effective forecasting process for products characterized by low quantity of units sold per item and erratic behavior of the demand. Due to these elements, the forecasting process has been based on efficient relationships with suppliers and buyers, in order to guarantee the necessary flexibility to respond to highly variable customers demand. - SUPPLIER MANAGEMENT IN THE VENDING MACHINE SECTOR: this project focused on the product/supplier portfolio analysis, aiming at supporting the company in identifying possible directions of improvement in strategic areas, such as the product phase-in/phase-out, supply flows consolidation, and average storage levels. - INVENTORY MANAGEMENT IN THE ENGINEERING (TECHNOLOGICAL, MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND SPECIAL PLANTS) SECTOR: this project was carried out in a company realizing heating and cooling plants in industrial buildings. Each construction job order involves hundreds of items of diverse sizes (from nuts and bolts to complex subsystems). Some of these items were managed at the company s warehouse (on a stock basis), while others were managed on a per-order basis. The project aimed at identifying the proper management policy for different item classes, establishing the average items consumption rates, and the items commonality in the different types of construction job orders.
