6 CROSS-BOUNDARY PROCESSES Cross-Boundary Processes is a new interdisciplinary course which tackles boundary issues such as: Ethics and Social Responsibility Creativity and Innovation Complexity and Network Management Sustainability The course accounts for 5 credits and it is held in an interactive way, tackling unsolved problematic issues, involving: Researchers Private companies Public Organizations Active participation from students is expected 6
7 LAKE POLI SCHOOL Cross Boundaries Processes are associated to the LAKE POLI SCHOOL (LaPS) an initiative for top selected students, which aims at: Nearer students to companies and real problems Challenge students and provide further opportunities to best and motivated students Open students and teachers minds, facing hot and unsolved topics The Lake Poli School develops between October 2012 and March 2013 (II year students), across three activities: S1 - Seminars (Cross Boundaries Processes) S2 - Business Case S3 - Final workshop 7
8 LAKE POLI SCHOOL S2: BUSINESS CASE The Business case is a challenging work in which students will work on an idea proposed by a company Students will work in groups of 6-8 people composed by: Management engineering candidates Science Computing engineering candidates Environmental engineering candidates The Business Case will be developed as follows: October 2012: company presentation and discussion October 2012 February 2013: work with interim discussions March 2013: final presentation and award ceremony Group Supervision: 1 professors 1 PhD student Final delivery Report (max 10,000 words) Presentation 8
9 LAKE POLI SCHOOL S3 FINAL WORKSHOP A final workshop will be held in March 2013 The workshop encompasses: Country Debates, with the perspective of students, public and private organization Company presentations and workshops Short research seminars Business Cases presentations The final prize to the best group will be assigned The jury will be composed by both academics and non academics 9

22 Business Processes Goal The aim of the course is to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and practical methodologies and tools to analyse the companies with a business process perspective. Key concepts of organizational design will be refreshed at the beginning of the course, to help better understand how a business process view fits with traditional organisational designs. The course will be developed through theoretical sessions, case discussion sessions, practical application sessions and a project work. 23 Business Strategy Goal This course sets forth the following objectives: to present major issues, concepts and tools in strategic analysis and planning; to encourage students to analyze and think critically about the concepts and tools introduced, using discussion of business case studies as one way to achieve this goal. to demonstrate how to write a business plan; to introduce Information & Communication Technology (ICT) as a strategic lever and to share/introduce the most innovative applications available for gaining a competitive advantage. 24 Corporate Information Systems Goal A Corporate Information System (CIS) is an ICT-based system for networked enterprises. Specifically a CIS aims at: Supporting operations and decisions/strategies Supporting information and knowledge sharing The course provides a view of ICT tools and their role/use in organizations, gives a CIS development methodology, and presents business process management cases. Program The program addresses: Information Technology in Organizations Architectures Types of CIS applications Business Processes and Web-based systems Security Exam The exam is a written test with exercises and questions. 25 Finance Goal The course is intended to be a general overview of Corporate Finance for students with no or basic background. The first part considers the role of the finance division in a company as well as the role of investors in a company. At the end of the course, students must be able to execute a valuation process of a company, understanding the key drivers of value. The second part of the course allows the students to understand in a general sense the reality of corporate finance in terms of what goes on in practice and what the hot topics are in the current markets. 26 Industrial Technologies Goal The course is to provide the competence for the design of manufacturing systems, according to the performance required, to the level of automation and, especially, according to the emerging trends (globalization, sustainability, environmental conscious design, etc.). It addresses manual and automated manufacturing systems, new approaches to production design and control, ICT as enabling technology and Sustainable Manufacturing. 27 Goal International Economics This course offers an overview of the functioning of international markets and of the interactions between economic agents (firms, consumers, institutions, policy makers) operating in different countries. The aim is to provide a better understanding of the opportunities and problems that the international economic environment presents to all internationalized firms. 30 Management of Innovation Goal The course aims at providing the models and methods for managing innovation. The course focuses first on Innovation (and specifically technological innovation) as a source of competitive advantage, therefore aims at providing capabilities for developing innovation strategies. Next, it focuses on product and service innovation and illustrates models and methods for managing the productservice development process. The aim of the course is to provide students with a broad understanding and knowledge of operations management concepts, methods and applications.
