2 2016 COURT OF HONOR GALA The NABC Foundation Court of Honor Gala was developed to bring recognition to an individual and the game of basketball while raising Foundation awareness and important financial support for literacy programs supported by the Foundation. During the Gala, guests will join the basketball community in presenting the Court of Honor Award. The Award is presented to an individual, businessman, educator, etc., who has roots in college basketball, values those roots in the game and has gone on to distinguish himself in his profession, exhibiting the highest standards for leadership. This year s honoree is George Raveling, Director of International Basketball, NIKE Inc. 5 About the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Located in Kansas City, Missouri, the NABC was founded in 1927 by Phog Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men s basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today s student-athletes. The four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education. As teachers and mentors to student athletes, coaches have the opportunity to help shape character and a commitment to education, service and sportsmanship. (NABC Foundation) The NABC Foundation was organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, and to support the charitable and education purposes of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, (NABC) a Kansas non-profit corporation. The Foundation has a history of supporting national literacy programs and operates the College Basketball Experience (CBE), an experiential facility in Kansas City which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

6 2016 NABC Court of Honor Recipient George Raveling Director of International Basketball, NIKE, Inc. George Raveling has garnered many titles in his 78 years including player, author, mentor, innovator, contributor, advocate, benefactor and international business executive. One more title seems to universally be the best fit. Just call him Coach. The Washington, D.C., native was a standout high school basketball player and accepted a scholarship to Villanova University. Raveling led the Wildcats in rebounding from , graduated with a degree in economics and accepted a position as a marketing analyst for the Sun Oil Company. A business career soon took a back seat to basketball when Raveling returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach. Just as quickly, he was recognized as a gifted recruiter, helping Villanova to a Final Four berth, drawing the attention of Maryland s Lefty Driesell. He joined the Terrapins staff and recruited two of the greatest players in Maryland history, Tom McMillen and Len Elmore, in the same class. Raveling s early success as an assistant and recruiter propelled him to his first head coaching position in 1972 at Washington State University. As a head coach from , Raveling coached 11 seasons at WSU, three at Iowa and eight at USC, leading all three programs to multiple NCAA tournament berths before being forced to retire after suffering serious injuries in a horrific car crash. He worked briefly as a color commentator for CBS and Fox Sports before accepting a position with Nike, Inc., as director of grassroots basketball. He has served as Nike s director of global basketball since 2000, promoting the sport around the world. Raveling has served in key roles with the NABC, NCAA and USA Basketball. He was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball of Fame in 2015 for his outstanding contributions to the game.
