The Library will be closed from: Thursday, November 24 through Sunday, November 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. We will reopen on Monday, November 28 at 10:00 A.M. 8 Thanksgiving Food Fun Facts 1. The first Thanksgiving was held in the autumn of 1621 but it did not become a national holiday until over 200 years later! 2. There was no turkey on the table at the first Thanksgiving. They would have probably had deer or venison, ducks, geese, oysters, lobsters, eel and fish. 3. Thanksgiving is the reason for TV dinners! After Thanksgiving in 1953, Swanson had so much extra turkey leftover that they decided to package it into aluminum trays with other sides to sell as the first TV dinners. 4. Each year the president of the U.S. pardons one turkey to spare it from being eaten. The first pardon of a turkey occurred in 1947 by President Truman. 5. Wild turkeys can run 20 miles per hour, but domesticated turkeys cannot because they are heavier. 6. The heaviest turkey on record weighed 86 pounds! 7. Kennedy A Gilmore Girls Reunion Celebration On Saturday, November 19 from 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M., Gilmore Girls fanatics are invited to the Allen Park Public Library for a party to celebrate the reunion of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore! When you arrive, grab a button or two, and show off which Rory boyfriend team you re on! During the party, we will be decorating mugs with your favorite Gilmore Girls quotes while testing your Stars Hollow knowledge with a trivia game. You can also sip coffee, eat a delicious treat and enjoy watching the Pilot episode! We will also have a gift basket raffle which will include some awesome Gilmore Girls inspired swag like a Doose s Market grocery bag, a Dragonfly Inn travel mug, and more! The Allen Park Public Library has a subscription to TumbleBookLibrary, and your family can access it from home! It s unlimited and FREE for you to use from home. TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of ebooks for children. They are a great way to encourage tech-savvy kids to enjoy reading. There are over 250 animated, talking picture books! This site also features Spanish and French books, read-along chapter books, non-fiction books, and exciting games and puzzles! You can use your computer, tablet, or mobile phone! Late Fall Programs Holiday Storytime: 6:30 P.M. November 7, 14, 28 & December 5, 12 For children ages 2-6 with parent or other adult. Quiet & immobile infants may attend with registered 2-6 year old. Preschool Storytime: 1:00 P.M. November 8, 15, 29, & December 6, 13 For children ages 3-5 who can participate independently. Caregivers & siblings wait in the library. Toddler Storytime: 10:30 A.M. November 9, 16, 30 & December 7, 14 For children ages 2-3 with parent or other adult. Caregivers are required to participate. To register your child for a storytime, call the library at Please read the following storytime guidelines before coming to the first meeting! Storytime Guidelines Arrive Early: Allow you and your little one enough time to get settled before storytime begins. Storytimes start promptly at their scheduled time. Once the meeting room door is closed, you will not be permitted to attend storytime. Visit the Restroom: Leave enough time for a trip to the restroom before storytime begins. Children who need to use the restroom during storytime will not be allowed to re-enter the meeting room. Courtesy to All: If a parent or guardian is in attendance (Holiday or Toddler Storytimes only), please silence your cell phones at the beginning of storytime. Please do not bring any snacks into storytime. We also ask that you leave your child(ren) s stuffed friends or toys out in the library. For both of these storytimes, caregiver participation is required. Prepare for Storytime: Preschool Storytime is our only storytime where children go into the meeting room by themselves. Prepare your child to attend without an adult. If your child isn t ready to attend alone, please consider changing to the Holiday Storytime. Behavior Expectations: Young children like to explore but doing so should not prevent others from enjoying their storytime. Please help encourage positive behaviors like good listening, following directions, and being respectful of people and things in the meeting room
