3 The European Compost Network - Vision Sustainable recycling of organic resources by producing high quality products for the environmental sound use on land and/or to generate renewable energy Pre-condition for sustainable recycling is the separate collection of organic wastes Monitoring of the treatment process and product quality by independent quality assurance scheme
4 Potential of Biodegradable waste in Europe 10 to 50 M tonnes of CO 2 could be saved 3 to 7 % of agricultural soils could be improved

9 EU Policy Strategies EoW Regulation Setting end of waste criteria for compost and digestate but with specific criteria for each product type (compost / digestate) Pre-requisite: Input materials from separate collection (no mixed waste, no sewage sludge) Requiring quality assured processing of separately collected bio-waste feedstocks according to a set of standards EoW criteria for compost and digestate are no sufficient drivers to improve and increase bio-waste recycling in Europe. 14
10 EU Policy Strategies Recycling targets Setting binding bio-waste recycling targets EoW criteria for compost and digestate will lead to increase and improve the recycling of bio-waste in Europe. Recycling/separate collection targets would essentially contribute to larger recovery of renewable resources mainly nutrients (N/P) and organic matter Step-wise implementation of recycling/separate collection targets (starting with 36,5 %, final target 50 %) Obligation to report on organic waste recycling by food industries and its implementation Source: Setting recycling/separate collection targets combined with biological treatment is needed
