Para realizar esta atividade utilize o seu livro, caderno e lista de verbos. Objective: Simple Past Auxiliary Verb DID, Passive voice, Second Conditional Simple Past We use the past simple to talk about actions and events in the past which we see as completed in the past. We can use the simple past to talk about a specific point in time. Laura came back last Monday. We saw her in the supermarket yesterday. They didn't phone their mother on Friday. We can also use the simple past to talk about a period of time. Harrison lived in Canada for seven years. They were in France from Monday to Saturday of last week. When I was living in New York, I went to all the art exhibitions I could. The past simple can be used with time expressions, such as: yesterday three weeks ago last year in 2002 from March to June for 6 weeks in the 1980s in the last century in the past for a long time Verbs can be classified as Regular or Irregular. Regular Verbs We have to add ED to the verbs: Examples: Dance Danced - They danced in a party last night. Study - Studied - He studied a lot for his English test. Talk Talked - I talked to Jane last month by phone. Irregular Verbs We have to study the list of irregular verbs. We can divide them by similarities to study.

2 Auxiliary verb DID DID NOT (DIDN T) We use the auxiliary verb DID to form interrogative and negative statements, when there isn t any form of verb to be in the sentence. Did Luisa buy a new car last month? Yes, she did. / No, she didn t. They didn t talk to their mother about the grades. Did Lorena phone me in the morning? (VISIT) The Passive Voice: form Many sentences can be written in both active and passive voice. Form the passive voice with a form of be and the past participle of the verb. M. Pei designed the Grand Pyramid at the Louvre Last year, the museum was selling copies of Monet s paintings. Ang Lee will direct a new film next year. The Tate Gallery is going to show Van Gogh s Sunflowers next month. Exercises Write the sentences in the Passive voice Famous paintings are bought by art collectors all over the world. Kurosawa s films are being shown at Film Center. Yu Hung s paintings have been bought by world leaders. The Grand Pyramid at the Louvre was designed by I. M. Pei. Last year, copies of Monet s paintings were being sold by the museum. A new film will be directed by Ang Lee next year. Van Gogh s Sunflowers is going to be shown at the Tate Gallery next month. 1. The British Museum has bought some new sculptures for its ancient Roman collection.

4 2. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is going to open a new gallery next year. 3. People built great pyramids throughout Central America during the height of the Mayan civilization. 4. Someone will repair the sculpture when it gets old. 5. Cesar Pelli designed the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. The passive voice: questions Yes / no questions Were these wood bowls made in Africa? Was this stone figure carved by the Incas? Yes, they were. / No, they weren t. Yes, it was. / No, It wasn t. Information questions Where were these chairs made? They were made in Brazil. When was this picture painted? It was painted in the 1960s. What are these knives used for? How was it made? They are used for cutting vegetables. It was made by hand.

5 Exercises Unscramble the words to write questions and answer them. 1) were / Where / bought / souvenirs / those 2) made / were / those / dolls / How 3) was / painted / that / by hand / plate 4) was / taken / When / photo / that Second conditional We can use the Second Conditional to talk about 'impossible' situations. Notice that after I / he/ she /it we often use the subjunctive form 'were' and not 'was'. If I had one million dollars, I would give a lot to charity. If there were no more hungry people in this world, it would be a much better place. If we were in New York today, we would be able to go to the free Elton John concert in Central Park. Notice that the main clause can contain 'would' 'could' or 'might. If we met up for lunch one day, I could take you to that new restaurant.

The contraction form: I would = I d You would = You d He would = He d She would = She d It would = It d We would = We d They would = They d Notice the form 'If I were you' which is often used to give advice.
