The Kingdom, the Republic and the Empire By Denniger Bolton I love history, especially ancient and when I saw this book about the history of the Roman Empire, its rise and its fall, I had to get it. This book by Simon Hawthorne included so much information, I was forced to slow down to get the facts straight in my head. I guess you want to have a history book tell you all the facts though. I liked the descriptions of the Gods of the Romans who of course we all know had many Gods. What I didn t know was that when they took over another country, they incorporated their Gods. And even places like Judea where they just had one God, they were tolerant and let the Jews practice their own religion in private but had to acknowledge the Roman Gods in public. The rulers of Rome were covered quite extensively from the Kingdom, the Republic and the Empire and each ruler, such as Julius Caesar, Nero and Pompey was described. The author delved into the wars and campaigns such as the Punic Wars and I found out the true story of Hannibal of Carthage. It was in the Second Punic War that Hannibal crossed the Alps with his elephants. It was good to hear his entire story, which I did not know. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Its contributions to the world are great, namely the parliamentary system which is the backbone of governance in almost all the countries. Roman army was world's first army which was paid a salary. Its contributions in other areas area also remarkable such as Architecture, music, arts, science. The book though short provided an overview of the roman empire, its rise and fall, different dynasties and other aspects. Good Read!
