1 Reading is the basis of all learning. In Grades 7 & 8 students need to be able to read and understand many different kinds of text. Informational text becomes even more important as students start to explore historical and scientific topics. All students entering Grades 7 & 8 are required to read at least two books from the accompanying list one fiction and one nonfiction. All students entering Grades 7 & 8 are also required to complete the two activities that can be found at the end of this document. These assignments should be turned into their teacher by September 10 and will be included as part of the first trimester grade.

4 Required Follow-Up Activities All students are required to read two books this summer and complete the following activities. Please return your work to during the first week of school. 1. Read any fiction book from the Suggested Book List for your grade. 2. Complete the Character Diary for one of the characters in your book. 3. Read any Informational Book from the Suggested Book List for your grade. 4. Complete the Literature Analysis for a Nonfiction Book. 5. Complete the cover page. Color in the number of stars to rate each book. 6. Staple your work together. Be thoughtful and neat. This is your first assignment for the year!
