1 NAME: PRESENTATION DATE: YOU RE THE TEACHER! You will pick a topic based on the civil war, teach your classmates a lesson in a creative way, and give/grade quizzes to see how well you taught! Your topics will involve aspects of what life was like during the civil war. Consider teaching your classmates about one of the following: A soldier s life in military camp A soldier s life on the battlefield What it was like to use the weapons which were available to the soldiers during the Civil War A typical battlefield layout what would you do to win a battle? Weapons during the Civil War What was travel like during those times, especially for the soldiers and their supplies? Battle on the water Clothes during the Civil War years Family Life while soldiers were off fighting during the Civil War Prison Camps during the Civil War Impact upon African-Americans during the Civil War (impact on slaves in the South // a soldier s life in an African-American unit) Food for soldiers for families how the N & S differed how they preserved food what kind of variety was available what was the most costly why? Uniforms of the North or South How were horses or other animals valuable during the Civil War? Political: Why did the North want to preserve the Union? Who was their leader? What did he do to encourage his people to continue to fight? Political: Why was the South so upset? Who was their leader? What did he do to encourage his people to fight? Famous Speeches: political, religious, or other popular poetry & music at the time. Heroes or Heroines (likely or unlikely) of the time what did they do? Medical problems & treatments during the Civil War How life changed after the Civil War Submit your own idea:

2 (1) Be creative! You are to use a visual to teach us your ideas. You could:! make use of a poster board,! dress in character or other props,! bring in food,! bring in political posters,! play music while showing us a visual,! present & explain a diorama,! show a series of drawings or cartoons (paper copies displayed on ELMO/projector or on a readable computer disk),! present a power point presentation,! make models/replicas of artifacts to represent your ideas. *NO MODELS/REPLICAS OF WEAPONS " If you have another idea, you may ask me. (2) QUIZ TIME! You must present your audience (the class) with a 5 question quiz after your presentation. At least 2 days before you present, you will submit to me the 5 questions that you want to ask the class. These questions show me what you want the class to learn from your presentation. # Two of those questions need to be thick thinking questions (questions that begin with Why or How and, sometimes What ; answers to thick questions are more than one word answers.) Remember, these questions help me to see what you want the class to learn from your presentation. (3) LENGTH Your presentation should be between 3 7 minutes in length, not including Q & A time.

3 How will you get your information? # First, beg, plead, & promise that you will take out the trash until you are 20 if your parents take you to your local, public library! # Second, of course with your parent s permission, you can access the internet. I will try to arrange a few times for our class to access the school s computer lab so that you can take some notes here as well. # Lastly, you may use the books that we have here in school to jot down a few ideas. 4 :: THINGS TO REMEMBER :: This is not intended to be a huge term project! Instead, this is intended to be a fun project where we can learn together. While your project may be entertaining, your main goal is not simply to entertain and be a comedian you will lose out on points if I see that is your main focus. QUIZ: Your ideas are presented to the class by asking us your questions Accuracy of ideas / ideas make sense Creativity * Time * Easy to Understand/ Clear Your questions are not clearly answered and/or you have given me less than 3 questions for the class. Weakly related & accurate No visual used for project; work is not neat total of 1 minutes or less No eye contact made; little volume; poor pacing (too fast/slow) No thick questions only one word answer or similar type given, but your questions are correctly answered Mostly related to your topic & mostly accurate Visual used for project; average neatness total of 2 minutes or less Little eye contact; average volume; average pacing 5 questions are submitted. At least two thick questions are asked and clearly answered Strongly related to your topic & accurate; 5 th Grade Work Visual used for project; excellence in work/neatness total of 3-7 minutes Eye contact made; good volume; Great pacing. * these categories will be weighted only ½ the points compared to other categories
