1 Riverside Intermediate School Summer Reinforcement Assignments Assignments are due on the first full day of school, August 30, LF Requirements: Journal LF teachers reviewed the journal requirements, practiced a sample entry with their students, and they are aware of the requirements. All returning students are asked to complete a minimum of 25 entries. These students will receive a pizza party. Students completing 40+ entries will receive 25 panther paws and a pizza party. All returning students report cards will reflect their completion level of the required summer journal assignment. LF Reinforcement Packet All returning students are required to complete the LF reinforcement packet. Completion or noncompletion will be factored into the student s homework grade for the first semester report card. Reading Requirements: During the second year of Riverside School s three-year Moving Around the World theme, we will focus on art and music from the different continents. To begin exploring the creativity of different cultures, the 2011 Summer Reading List will focus on folktales. Students are required to read at least two folktales from the Summer Reading List and complete the accompanying reading project. If the students elect to read more than the two required folktales, they will receive 5 panther paws for each additional 25 pages read. Math Requirements: This year we are requiring all students to participate in the summer math skills reinforcement. We are excited to be asking the students to work in the IXL online math program. Research shows that students can lose an average of 2.8 months of math learning over the summer. IXL.com s program will be very effective in avoiding the summer learning loss. This work will help students practice skills and retain their current math level. By participating in this program, we will not have to spend as much class time in the fall reviewing old skills, and we can move forward with teaching new concepts. Parents will need to log onto In the upper right hand corner, written in blue, click on create an account. On the right hand side there is a rectangle labeled parents, click join for $9.95 a month and follow the prompts. Students completion of the required IXL assignments will be noted on their first interim. In addition, they will receive 25 panther paws to start off the new school year. We hope you and your child have a safe and fun summer. Kathy Consuegra Dean of Academic and Student Affairs

2 Please record below any additional reading this summer: folktales, books of choice, Kindle or Nook titles, magazines, ebooks, etc. For each additional 25 pages read, after the two required folktales, students earn five Panther Paws.
