2 Travel planning policy Management of transport generated by developments is included within national, regional and local policy. The National Planning Policy Framework states that all developments which generate significant amounts of movement should be required to provide a travel plan. The National Planning Practice Guidance, published in March 2014, further reinforces the importance of travel plans in the planning context. This travel plan supports the practical implementation of Surrey County Council s Local Transport Plan objectives (LTP3). Information about the school School expansion The school had 3 additional classrooms built over the summer of 2014 a special Reception Class block which is located in the KS1 playground. The building can be accessed through the playground via the pedestrian gate which leads onto Sythwood. There will be an additional 30 children per year for the next 4 years. An additional build is due to start in Easter 2016 this be a 6 room build that will house 4 classrooms, 2 admin offices, an intervention room and toilet facilities. The area to be used is shown below

6 School location The original Sythwood School opened in 1977 and this building now houses the juniors. The Infant children and the school office are housed in a spectacular building which won a design award when it was built in The central area is an atrium with our new computer suite, fiction and non-fiction libraries and a maths resource area. There are three classes in each year group. These are mixed in ability and the average number of children in each class is 30. To reflect the fact that our school is built on the site of the famous Slococks Nursery, all of our classes are named after trees. The School has been a specialist centre for children with vision impairment since The children are in mainstream classes and follow the same curriculum as their peers, with appropriate adaptation depending on individual needs. There are excellent resources to enhance the learning of a child using Braille or large print materials. A wide range of tactile equipment enables access to all areas of the curriculum. There are Braille signs around the school building and in our copse. We also have ramps at the main school entrances and toilets for the disabled in each building. Playground areas provide stimulating features and the sensory garden is an area for everyone to enjoy. Sythwood is located on a busy residential road next to a housing estate and opposite a trading estate. Access to the trading estate is only via a footpath from Sythwood and traffic entering it must approach from Kestrel Way, in Horsell. The school is located 1.5 miles from Woking town centre.

10 Existing transport links Sythwood is located 1.5 miles from Woking Town Centre which has a mainline train station in the town with quick, easy commuter access to Central London this is, however not used by the pupils at the school to travel to and from school and it is not situated within the catchment area of the school. There is a bus stop immediately outside the school which is served by route 91. This gives easy access to the town centre, Goldsworth Park and Knaphill and passes the school every 10 minutes during peak periods. The school does not have a dedicated school bus. There is a cycle path along Sythwood which goes to the town centre. There are also designated cycle routes along the Basingstoke canal and from the town centre. The school does not have a school crossing patrols but in 2013 a pelican crossing was installed directly outside the main school gates. To the right of the school entrance, approximately 200 metres there is a Pelican crossing to cross to Bullbeggers and Horsell. Sustainable travel initiatives The school is currently implementing a number of initiatives to tackle travel issues; they did not participate in the annual Golden Boot Challenge in 2015 as in previous years the mode shift in sustainable travel was minimal, however, this is planned for The school is both a Healthy school and an Eco school. Car sharing is currently not promoted through the school, but runs unofficially amongst parents. The school are looking to participate in the following Road Safety programmes in Reception- Road Safety Play Box Basic road safety skills need to be introduced to pre school children as early as possible to help their development as small children have very little road safety knowledge until they attend school at five. Research has shown that a child s brain goes through a tremendous acceleration of development from an early age and they respond quickly to learning and this happens through practical interactive play. Year1, 3 and 4- Pedestrian Training You may consider pedestrian road safety to be a matter of common sense and personal choice but it

11 is important to remind ourselves from time to time of helpful tips to maximise our safety whilst walking alongside and crossing our increasingly busy roads. In particular, parents should make sure their children and young people are aware of the following points: Year 2 Basic Road safety training on Scooters and bikes with a road safety and sharing space theme. Year 5 and 6 - Bikeability Level 1 and 2- Bikeability is cycling proficiency for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads. This was not run in 2014 and 2015 but we are looking to add it in 2016 to aid our pupils in making sustainable travel choices. Whole School The Golden Boot Challenge allows schools try out green travel and classes to compete to win the Golden Boot Trophy. Each summer, around 250 schools take part in the Golden Boot Challenge. It promotes healthy and sustainable travel and is run in a way that makes it possible for everyone to take part. Each class gets a point for each pupil who walked, scooted, cycled, or travelled by public transport to school. We don't forget pupils who have no alternative to the car and each pupil who used car share or park 'n' stride also scores a point. Classes compete against each other to win the coveted Golden Boot Trophy. Customised Cycling This helps to improve the well-being of the staff and students providing them with the skills to be able to negotiate busy roads and junctions on their route to and from school; improving basic skills and encouraging group cycling. Tailoring to the individuals needs. This costs 20 for a 3 hour session. Staff The new staff handbook will highlight the cycle to work scheme and the ability to purchase a bike, using the following schemes: o o A saving of up to 42% off the cost of a new bike through the tax-free 'salary sacrifice' cycle to work scheme by choosing a new bike from an independent partnership store or Halfords. An interest free loan scheme offering up to 500 on a brand new bike. o Free cycle guides are made available to the staff as is Customised cycling

Currently there are 3 specific scooter pods, which enable 36 scooters to be parked. The school have several sail canopies which parents are able to wait under whilst collecting from school. Each class has a locker for staff belongings; however these are not large and would not cater for a change of clothes if a staff member was to shower. The school has no showers or drying area.
